A single room movie just talking should not be this good but it's amazing. The plot is engaging and the camera work is incredible.
Truly a masterpiece. A film of the 50s, shot entirely in a single set, which manages to keep the tension always high alternating with moments of pause to let us viewers breathe and with super sensible motivations, without too much forcing. A denunciation of the American government that is said to be perfect but is full of prejudices. Every single actor played their part PERFECTLY. I never thought I would put a 10 on a 1h30m movie.
no music,no name,no different place,no woman ! That's the movie !
I'm not a professional film critic or anything, and I'm not trying to comment like one, but I've got something I'm pretty sure on why some movies are so great: They simply never stop on get better as the runtime go.
I saw the movie because of its reputation. I knew its something good and i wanted to find out why everyone can't stop praising it. So when Henry Fonda pulled out that switch blade and stuck it on the table, i thought "oh thats it, that's why they say this movie is great, a huge twist". And then came the old guy with great insights about the old man downstairs and the woman across the street, they were on 2 to 10; And then there was the man who shouts his hate for people from the slumps, everyone in the room showed him how ignorant he was, they were tied on 6/6; And finally, the last man teared up his photo with his son he haven't seen in 2 years, sobbingly say "not guilty" ... Everything built up like a pile of random acts at first, but as the movie progresses everything fell into place like a luxury box of Belgium chocolates. I'm not saying you need to be keep on getting better to be a great movie, a lot of classics don't work the same way (or even the opposite), but if a movie can build up like 12 Angry Men, you just can't be bad.
(via Movie Blaze for WP) Watched this film aged 11 thirty years ago on t.v home from school sick and thought its was awesome. Rewatched it 4 times since and its greatness has not dimmed at all. Timeless.
I never thought a movie with only 12 men in 1 room with no action could be so thrilling, so engaging, so thought-provoking, so emotional so... PERFECT!
Simply perfect. A classic landmark movie in the whole cinema history. After watching movies like this you realize how low today's movies quality standards are.
The plot is amazing. 12 men just argue and discuss murder in a room for the whole film. In A room! The film, however, is so interesting. It's probably a good description of American Jury System in 50's.
Brilliantly illustrates humanity’s folly and saving grace.
Magnificently efficient, powerful filmmaking that tells a tale the size of the Chrysler building from the cramped confines of a small jury deliberation room. A modern rendition of the same source material might have expanded this to cover the trial, the repercussions, the media's reaction and a happy ending for each juror, which completely misses the point. The most vivid drama of almost any court case comes from the simple, nondescript table its jurors convene around to determine their verdict; everything else is just sideshow.
Via a dozen tremendous performances from his cast, first-time director Sidney Lumet produces a dazzling showcase of dense character development, precise plot expansions, expert dramatic timing and meaningful underlying conclusions. I must have seen it a dozen times now and still it holds me in rapt attention from word one.
The power of movie dialogue really makes this movie a true classic.
The story to 12 Angry Men is one man on a jury stands alone in a case in which most are initially convinced one way but one by one may be convinced another way.
12 men in one room just talking about one murder case and them sharing they opinions if the person that may have committed murder is guilty or not, now many things here could have went wrong, you got to have the best writer, the best director and the best actors to make this movie work and it payed off so well and I think this is cinema's greatest risk of doing something new with the story, giving it a twist and a edge and 12 Angry Men paid off brilliantly.
The acting from every singe actor in this movie all do realistic, believable, funny and serious performance's and they all add a lot of weight and drama to their character's. I wish I can bring up every single actors name in this cast but I'm not since these 12 of them and it's going to take up the all page and I can't talk about every singe actor and go into detail about them one at a time, but I can say that everyone in the movie did a flawless work of acting that's pure Oscar worthy and the kind of drama acting they should show kids in drama school. Nicely done fellas.
Sidney Lumet directed this movie and this has to be some of the best directing I've seen from this guy. He really added a lot to this movie when it came to story and characters and the back and forward they have with each other and it worked by his direction.
The characters in the movie (The Twelve Angry Men) don't really like each that much as in every scene they at each other's throat trying to confidence the other men in the room that the man is guilty for murder while that person and the other's bring up some really solid points that this man is guilty or not guilty for murder. As a viewer myself I got really interested in the case and trying to think if he's guilty or not, so this movie does a fantastic job of giving the viewer a opinion on the case and see if you think he did it or not.
For problems with the movie: I don't have any.
Overall 12 Angry Men is such a classic movie with excellent performances from everyone, the writing outstanding and the directing was some of the best. You haven't seen 12 Angry Men then I say go see it, it's worth your time.
I watched 12 Angry Men last night and I'm still a bit flabbergasted about how good this is. It really deserves the praise it gets. It's such a simple concept and it's executed almost perfectly. You feel like you're in the room and are actively participating in the amazing dialogue. Speaking of the words: the way they tell the story of the murder is flawless. They show nothing, but in the end you really feel like you can reconstruct the whole thing in your head. The biggest achievement, imho, is that the themes are still relevant 66 years later. There are very few movies who pull that off.
12 absolute strangers with different backgrounds, different types of personalities and different beliefs enter a jury room and debate, guilty or not guilty? Everyone enters that room thinking they know exactly the answer to that question but one man's opinion can always be changed, all it takes is one rational argument. Seeing all these different types of personalities bringing something different to the table is truly fascinating. One thing's for sure, only good things can come from having a conversation. The characters feel so real, the acting is natural, the dialogue is gold and the direction of the story is perfection. Truly one of the best scripts ever to be written and a subject matter that will forever be relevant.
When someone asks you what means the sentence "a camera in hand and an idea in mind", you just show this movie.

It was love at first sight. Really deep movie, makes you think twice before you do anything.
So good and fluid. What amazed me the more was that it's a very old movie, just one place where happens the action, but doesn't bores at all. It's very well made, and I think it's so hard to make something like that and that good. So in my opinion, old but gold.
Sometimes I hate myself.
Why in the fuck did I wait so fucking long to watch this masterpiece???
One of the greatest movies I've ever saw. Great dialogues, great direction and the acting, oh boy, the acting..... specially Henry Fonda and Lee J. Cobb (so fucking good).
Sorry for the cursing. But yeah, this movie is fucking great (sorry again). I'm mad!
An Absolute masterpiece. I'll re-watch this again in the future.
This is a faultless movie.
Long regarded as my favourite movie of all time. I love dialogue heavy stories that can paint a deliberate picture of events. This is a masterpiece and it came out 24 yrs before my birth. What a wonderful concoction of characters. Despite its one room set it doesn't feel constrained or claustrophobic, not unless that is the intent for that particular string of dialogue/questioning. Everytime it comes on the television I make a point to stop and enjoy it. A cinematic treasure. 9.5
I see a lot of terms here "single room movie", single space movie"... Do you guys don't have a specific term for it? In German we would say it's a Kammerspiel ;)
Man, I expected so much more with how highly rated this movie is.
I can’t recommend this movie enough. I do NOT ever watch movies that were made before 2000, that’s just my personal preference, but I ended up watching this movie with my dad and WOW. I was so invested in the story and its so thought provoking and conversation worthy. And its literally just all dialogue in a room. So good, one of my 10/10s and I’m super picky about which movies I give that. I haven’t seen anything similar that has lived up to this.
The Anatomy Of A Jury!
I have never seen such a film.My best wached single space movie.Great acting and scenario. You should wach this movie.
This movie was amazing...it should be redone...The whole movie takes place in jury's chamber but the dialogue captures you it doesn't matter
Definitely in my top 5 of all times
very deep.. you can see personalities emerging, and perhaps how/why some people should clearly not be put into positions of responsibility or authority over others!
Definitely one of my top five favorite movies of all time. I could never get tired of it.
The story really shows the beauty of the American judicial system, and the importance of a trial by jury, in particular, the gravity of a juror's duty.
I haven't seen this in awhile. It's a classic, so I don't need to convince anyone to see it. If you don't watch it for the debate, see it for the love story. The love story I'm speaking of is the relationship between Jack Warden and that friggin' handkerchief of his. Talk about pulling focus...I know this started as a play and maybe Warden was in stage mode but goddamn does he do everything he can with that cloth to make everyone watch him when he's not the one talking. I know it's sweaty in that room and everyone is sweating but every chance he gets, he gets up from his seat, paces around and wipes down his face and his arms. The climax comes when at some point in the third act, when there is an important exchange happening in the foreground, Warden is in the background, SWINGING IT AROUND IN A CIRCLE. How can you not be distracted by that?! It was hysterical. I really want to know if the other actors were mad at his mugging. Or who knows maybe this was a case of his character was a nobody, then he comes on set chewing the shit out of it, and boom we've got another layer of good story here. I mean, I'm glad he was doing it, I suppose it was a good choice, but there had to be at least one other actor who was not happy about it.
This concludes today's impromptu Trial Trilogy, first it was Anatomy of a Murder, then Witness for the Prosecution then 12 Angry Men. I was initially surprised at the coincidence that I ordered on 3 different occasions movies about a trial entirely not on purpose...then I realized it was probably a "you bought this, you might like this" type thing on Amazon. Damn you Amazon, you're good.
Have you ever thought you can create a great movie using only one room? No? You think that is impossible? Watch '12 Angry Men' and it might prove that you're wrong... Or guilty?
great movie ... good Actors ... good story ... no fx ...today most movies have only fx
This is CINEMA. Perfect job by Lumet and the actors.
when minimal wasn't cool yet.
A very important message that only gets better with age. In a day of assumptions, we need to check our "facts".
Simple premise of the movie, but perfect screenplay and camera work.
They don't make movies like this anymore.
I recently watched "12 Angry Men" for the first time in 2024, considering myself a film buff. I found the movie to be excellent, with strong acting and moments of genuine humor. The arguments presented are compelling yet straightforward, addressing issues like racism, which surprised me for a black-and-white film of its era. I particularly appreciated the emphasis towards the end on the importance of not judging someone based on their background. It effectively underscores the moral divide between valuing human life and casting judgment without due consideration.
Surprisingly enjoyable and gripping single room black and white film about the titular 12 angry men.
Realistic, slightly dramatised but still faithful, retelling of the incredibly common and yet mostly unspoken stories of jurors entrusted with accused murderers’ futures.
I don't know. It's possible.
It's being stuck in a box full of testosterone that you've shaken out in advance: oppressive, inflamed, stifling, self-centered and cunning.
12 ANGRY MEN offers a film that we don't see, but; that we imagine and listen to, like our mother telling us a story by the bedside. All the unfolding facts of the homicide and the court are so well described and mimed that we have the impression of having seen it.
Each man around this condemnation table has their personality and their experiences which they use during this play of deductions and who is right, ah... the men.
Although I can offer an air of disappointment at the film here; despite everything, he reveals the human, the best we have buried with the worst, the differences have been put aside to offer justice. This movie is just an hour and a half vision of anyone, it's you and me.
script classes, excellent framing, impeccable direction.
I love this movie, it's so smart and so captivating even though basically the whole movie is just in one room.
The only thing that doesn't fully work for me is that it ends quite abruptly, and while it's still emotional, it felt a bit anticlimactic for me.
Wow! I watched this movie based on its solid reputation. Who would have thought that a movie filmed almost entirely in one room, and based almost entirely on dialogue and conversation, could capture my attention for so long. Exceptional!
I get it, I get the why this movie is recommended so much. Such an achievment in terms of storytelling and film. While Citizen Kane bored me, this had me intrigued the whole way through.
This one kept me so engaged that I couldn't even make out when the movie was finished.I always watched courtroom dramas and enjoyed the debates with all the intellect and tricks. But the part of jury in the court was a mystery to me.But this movie solved all the mystery. And after watching it,I feel like I want more such movies. It's still hung in my mind and I can't but say what a battle it was-between those 12 intellectuals with so much personal and moral dilemma, stereotypes and the way of justice in respect to them. All came in at a time and gave me a complete satisfaction.Hats of to all the staffs of the movie.
This is an old film but it’s doesn’t even feel like it - there’s nothing offensive or bad it’s very well done
I really liked this film it was all just 12 people in one room talking, and they did it really well by getting to know the whole storyline of the court case through what the jury are discussing. You get to know all the characters and they use the space of the room really well
just a surprisingly good film :)
One of if not the only flawless movie.
Excellent acting
Great dialogue
Maintains interest throughout a movie that takes place in one room.

Very very recommendable to all, there is no doubt
Being trapped in a room with these 12 angry men is an inquisition of the soul. You will emerge a better person, having contemplated your own racist and prejudiced biases. None are innocent, but all are entertained.
You put 12 unpleasant people in a room for 1h 37 m, and you make a masterpiece of it, then you realize what the art of cinema truly means
Innocent till proven guilty. Incredible film was on the edge of my seat the entire time.
Watched this after enjoying another single room classic - “Man from Earth”. Fantastic work.
Very interesting how they could discuss everything in details and question every single thing instead of just accepting what it is. It was amazing
Plain yet so wonderful... A must watched movie for sure... Top of the cinema...
Normal, simply ordinary. That's the most beautiful thing about this movie, it's how life-like it is. Nothing fictional about it. Would pay to watch these 12 angry men do another case.
Favourite film and set up my interest in movies that are filmed all in one room.
"A superbly written, dramatically effective courtroom thriller that rightfully stands as a modern classic."
in that time , this movie , i can just say genius
another perspective is what we need. i like it
in this modern day I'm not really into black and white movies until I watched this masterpiece, this is fairly simple movie its like a social experiment when you put a different kind of people with different backgrounds, attitudes and viewpoints, discussing in a closed forum about subject that shouldn't have any reference to any of them and they are expected to give their wit and obejctivity, the stars are Lee J. Cobb and henry fonda with supreme acting and director sidney lumet who brilliantly mix 12 people with only single movie set seasoned with simple plot and climatic ending into a stunning drama filled with emotion and argument, fantastic!!
I enjoied it. Good story, and performances.
magnificent film and performances. One room only, no more is needed
Watching 12 Angry Men. Again.
