I cried :'( amazing film though
Don't wait to tell your Ellie you love her
Imaginative, fun and moving - as close to perfect as Pixar has ever been.
I love this movie. It's probably the best movie ever made after The Lion King. The story is beautiful, the first 10 minutes alone, telling the story of Carl and Ellie, have me crying. In 10 minutes it is told the most beautiful love story I've ever seen and it portrays so beautifully everything one looks for, to find and spend the rest of one's life with someone. To have a great adventure next to someone, with no regrets even if dreams were unfulfilled. And how having a heart broken, someone so important taken away, and to find others that again complete us. Such a beautiful message.
Depressing intro, movie was okay but didn't like the music!!
MajorMercyFlush. Who's complaining about the Parental Guidance rating? The Incredibles was rated PG for Violence. Shrek was rated PG for suggestive Language. No one is suggesting the show should have been PG13. I was just making a tongue in cheek comment about a movie that I despised.
People really go off the deep end when you insult a Pixar movie apparently. LOL.
hands down the best goddam movie in all of Disney's history!!
My fear has now subsided. I was not a fan of Pixar's last release "WALL-E" or it's immediate predecessor "Ratatouille". "WALL-E" was preachy to me. It painted a picture of a lazy and wasteful mankind and went too far in it's desire to portray us all as planet-destroyers. "Ratatouille" on the other hand was filled with amazing visuals but the story was a real bore. I longed for the days of "Monsters Inc." and "The Incredibles", the Pixar efforts that were fall down funny or as exciting as their live action counterparts.
Now with "Up" I still haven't gotten fall down funny or exciting, but I did get a truly touching film about enjoying life to the fullest. There are a lot of people who are going to feel a lump in their throat when they view the life and times of Carl Fredricksen, the grumpy crumudgeon who lived a wonderful life with his energetic wife Emma. Their dreams were never truly realized however, because of life's little (and big) tragedies. Carl tries to make their final dream a reality buts ends up making more friends than he can handle in Russell the Wilderness Scout, Kevin the Bird, and Dug the Dog.
"Up" looks great (naturally it's Pixar), and I really liked that every character was animated in a different style. Some characters have squared features, others are rounded. There's small noses, large noses, big ears, little ears, etc. And even the heights of the floating house are relayed convincingly to the viewer. It actually feels at times like you are up their with Carl and Russell.

Up is an endearing and magical joy ride which is visually stunning and melts your heart one way or the other. Heartwarming to its core this beautiful movie cannot be missed by any individual who loves the beauty and soul of animation movies. Oscar nominated director Pete Doctor merges adventure, comedy and emotions so smoothly that it makes you feel light and brings a unending smile on your faces.
Neatly scripted with first-rate production values --- in the climax, the swordfights and the fighter aircraft stunts are edge-of-the-seat stuff.
A Grumpy Old man on an embarking journey to fulfill his beloved last wish is a must watch gem from Disney Pixar.

Pixar at its best; dreaming up a playful, preposterous premise (whoah, way too many p's in a row there) and then riffing on it in all sorts of clever, emotionally resonant, visually incredible ways. In this case, of course, it's a cute little airborne house, suspended from a mass of festively-colored helium balloons on a sort of farewell voyage to South America.
The filmmakers don't dwell on the science of this and neither do we. It's just too much fun to second-guess, a slice of childhood imagination come to life, which fits Up's warm narrative like a cozy winter glove. That sense of freshly-rediscovered adventure, a renewed link to the open-minded optimism of our earliest memories, that's what drives the plot and binds us to the cast. Right from the picture-perfect opening scene, arguably the best dialog-free montage ever, it's got us locked in for the long haul. Even when the second act sprawls, threatening to devolve into a broad adventure tale, trailing a long tail of recurring gags, we're thrown a thematic bone to keep it all together, neat and tidy.
The traditional climax may feel just a hair on the flat side - the villain dispensed in a manner befitting a James Bond evildoer - but the story's real apex arrives just before the closing credits, when the preceding ninety minutes of small details and callbacks finally pay off in a rich, appropriate farewell.
The begin is a beautiful but very depressing story. Overall I found the movie just plain sad throughout. It only gets happy about the last ten minutes. Not exactly what I look for in a family film. Definitely would be a good one if you’re looking for a movie to sob through. Chalk this one to “not my type of film”.
that was a good movie. they was old
this movie had Everything.
1. old ppl
2. fat little baby birds
3. a doggy
This movie is so sad and so beautiful.
@stryjewski (missed your post back at the time, and was doing some housekeeping) -
You are right no one, including me, suggested it be PG-13 simply that if you are trying to explain dead babies, heaven and attempted murder to a crying child its probably at the upper end of PG for them. Your comments didn't come across as tongue in cheek at all as evidenced by dunpealhunter's query too. It was your post that piqued my interest as you seemed to have gone off the deep end. :)
The rest (14 of the 18 lines) of it was "side note" commentary about ratings in general and a great documentary discussing them. As Killerc pointed out these forums aren't for 5 y/o (tut tut FatalMuzza) so figured your/dunpealhunter post served as a good jumping off point to another semi related topic that may draw interest.
Reading "Great film/episode" "I liked it" "I hate it" comments over and over gets a little stale.
Anyway...
Beautiful movie. The story starts of just cute but is actually very strong and really beautiful. The music is on point, makes it even more magical and Russel is adorable!
I feel completely alone in this, but Up was NOT my favorite Pixar movie (not even close!) The commercials showed funny bits with a kid and a dog, but the actual movie hits you in the face with a depressing intro and a not-very-uplifting storyline. I always assume that Pixar movies will have some sappiness, but this one made me downright sad in an unexpected way. No thanks! I much prefer The Incredibles and Finding Nemo.
excellent film, a family favourite
I felt a bit upset because it made me cry in the cinema. But it's a good Pixar movie.
The best movie of animation that I have seen in a lot of time! So good for children as for adults. 10/10
I love this movie it's one of my favorite Disney movies
Mu family's favorite
Wow! One of the best
Loved this film could watch it over and over
A really great movie for the whole family to watch together.
Our 3-4 year old son loved this movie.
PG Film, PG thread ;)
This is slightly above average for me, not one of the best.
The movie "Up" is another wonderful Pixar film. I found it to be very entertaining as well as giving a good storyline for people of all ages. However the beginning was not my favorite I did however overly enjoy the rest of the movie. I loved the fact that the film was very bright and cheerful and full of adventure. Carl (Edward Asner) is a stubborn old man that is stuck in his ways and really does not seem to like people. Russell (Jordan Nagai) is a wilderness explorer who is bound determined to get his assisting the elderly badge. However, Russell did not know that he was about to be on a wild adventure with a 70 year old man, in a house flown by balloons. Carl did not expect to be on an adventure with anyone else, let alone run into a talking dog and a bird that Russell named Kevin. The theme to the movie "UP" is to never give up on your dreams and what you want out of life. Russell will not give up on getting his assisting the elderly badge and Carl will not give up on Ellie's dream. The theme of this movie matches the theme in the movie the "Incredibles", with never giving up on your dreams and what you want out of life. There are many techniques in the movie "Up" that show us the theme of the movie. The lighting is very bright and cheerful that goes against the gray old face of Carl. The angles in the movie make you feel like you are a part of the action. When they are flying in the air and have to go a different direction, you feel as if you are in the house as well. The angels also help you too see the reactions off all of the people involved. I think that this film gave you a good sense on the fact that if you stick with what you want to do in life that in one way or another you can and will get the job done. Russell and Carl were both faced with tough obstacles that kept getting in the way of what they wanted to accomplish but they always seemed to get through them. I think that this is a good kid's movie on how hard sometimes you have to work just to get a wilderness explorer badge.
I had heard great things about this movie but never took the time to watch it. But, wow! What a beautiful movie!
An all-time favourite. Definitely one of Pixar's greatest movies, it's got humour, emotion and even a bit of action! Highly recommend it if you're looking for a good cry and a good laugh! 10/10
One hundred years from now, film scholars will study the 15 wordless minutes near the beginning of this movie as one of the finest examples of storytelling across any medium or genre. I say this without threat of hyperbole.
the most beautiful love story !
Yes, the opening sequence is touching, but I prefer the far superior “La Maison en Petits Cubes” which came out the year prior. The rest of the movie is forgettable and struck me as distinctly unfunny and weirdly mean-spirited. The gender issues with the bird, the bizarre talking dogs, the childhood hero turned psycho all turned me off in a big way.
First 10 minutes are among some of the best scenes in any movie, period. Then the rest happens.
the dogs and that dumb high pitched voice really bring this down for me.
A fun and charming adventure.
'Up' certainly knows how to tug at the heartstrings. It creates a very meaningful story around Carl Fredricksen (Ed Asner), with the early scenes particularly standing out as superb.
I don't overly enjoy the parts with Dug (Bob Peterson) and Kevin (Pete Docter), not that they are bad, though everything with Fredricksen, Russell (Jordan Nagai) and Charles F. Muntz (Christopher Plummer) is entertaining and/or hearty.
Asner and Nagai do terrific, in what is one of Disney's 'best of the rest' films. There is some lovely music by Michael Giacchino, too. Go watch!
this is even better than finding nemo
Excellent computer animation, mediocre storyline -- albeit good enough. I believe this is as good for children as adults -- but do watch for any children getting anything of the same idea to try on their own. (You know how kids can be.) Not very 'action-packed' but not boring either. It'll keep your attention as you wonder what will happen next.
One of the better "new" animated movies (but somehow they just don't reach "Ice Age", "Shrek" or "Monster's Inc.").
Starts making you cry but very disappointing end.
Aww I watched this with my little brothers and baby sister.
we enjoyed it
What if Michael Bay Directed "UP"?

So funny!
:D :D :D
Cinema Paco 1. Picture 5/5 Sound 4.5 / 5 .. The first 10 minutes are stunning how good they are. Then it's fine, some scenes very well "
Dramatic Disney film!
Definitely a year jerker. One of the best movies since Toy Story and I was fascinated by the plot!
An 7 for this movie because you can see how much love and attention it got, it's also an original story but gets you dazzled off at the end.
It was a trap! But a good one.
Why a 5 yr old would be interested in this site and reading the comments is beyond me. Maybe you should be controlling your children on the internet rather than thinking that a site which hosts 18
+ and Unrated descriptions of movies/TV Shows, that the commenters should be doing your job for you.
Nice job advertising Shortbus in a Disney thread 5yo's are reading MajorMercyFlush. I'm sure their well into the opening scene by now. Don;t forget to add urls to mentioned movies to make it even simpler. :)
dunpealhunter hits the nail on the head.
@stryjewski;
PG - Parents Guidence recommended... It's an advisory. Parent. Guide. Assumptions lead to exactly what you've said. I've had exactly the same situation before. One kid was cool the other lost their mind.
This is absolutely not directed at you, so please don't take it this that way, it's a broad personal observation. Too many people see ratings classification as a greenlight as opposed to a give way. They are meant to inform not insinuate. The ultimate decision to expose either themselves or there guardianship lies with that party and the fine print of whatever they are using to base that decision upon.
Random MajorMercyFlush side note: There is a fantastic documentary called "This Film is Not Yet Rated" that delves into the inner workings of the MPPA and how gratuitous violence is far more acceptable than any notion of sexuality, that a numerous heads can explode bloody over people and can get an M yet the idea of a pube will get an instant R (NC-17) and be limited or rejected to screenings. It is seriously worth watching to see how we you are being informed/swayed. I say "you" and mean those under the MPPA. I live in Australia and have a staunch enough industry that when films are refused classifcation, for example Ken Park, 9 Songs, Shortbus (that one's for you Fatalmuzza) we question their authority at a level that can be heard and demand they justify it, regardless of it's artistic merit. We simply won't stand for being told as adults something is deemed beyond the capacity for us to decide whether it should be seen by us. In the case of Ken Park, it was refused classifaction and one of our highly regarded national figures held their own public screening to draw attention to the fact that ratings are informative yet the ultimate decision lies with a responcible individual. It was shutdown, she was released without charge and is seen as landmark. All of those films were reclassified the moment someone looked their way.
Thanks for playing.
I really like all Disney movies.
Are you serious? This movie is rated PG, but it is in no way as shocking as you just described. My 6 year old nephew saw it and liked it very much.
I thought it was a great story. A man who since he was a kid had a dream together with his best friend who later became his wife, once he finally decides to follow up on his childhood dream years later its too late for his wife. But he doesn't give up and uses the house in witch he lived with his wife and has so many fond memories of to go to that far away place of witch he always dreamed of going to.
Like always Pixar delivered a masterpiece. The expectations of their movies is always very high, but i think this movie was a success and that they achieved the goals they had in mind.
So I'm watching this with my young daughter and the Fing lady in the film miscarries? WHAT? Now my older kid is like, where's the baby? Where? I have to explain to her WTF happened and it turns into an hour long conversation about babies dying and not every baby is born alive, do they go to heaven? Christ.. Thanks Walt Disney, you jerks.... Ok through that.. Then the show gets so boring I fall asleep only to wake up to my younger kid crying because the main characters hero is trying to KILL him.. Why's his hero trying to kill him daddy? Thanks again Walt Disney! My kids refer to this movie as "The one where the baby dies" Good show!

The best movie of Pixar, in my opinion.
