Don't bother with the dubbed versions - stick with the original script and the subtitles!
Where is original Dragon Ball? The japanese original version, not the english one, cut and dubbed? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088509 I have never seen the english version, only the japanese and latinamerican.
This Dragon Ball series is awesome!
Not as many people watched this show compared to DBZ, but I think this show is just as good as DBZ. It has a less serious and more comedic tone. It’s great to watch the characters that got pushed aside in DBZ such as Tien and Roshi get treated as serious threats to Goku.

I found this way too slow so switched to the manga after like 6 episodes, manga is really good tho, much quicker and I think if I watched a bit longer and waited for the tournament arc I would have loved the series too

Well after seeing every episode I honestly believe DB is extremely underrated. Goku's innocence and ignorance gives the series a magnificent charm. I really love the fact the this series actually has a stronger focus on the sense of adventure rather than being focused on the fights that this franchise eventually came to be known for. Seeing characters that eventually fade into unimportance in DBZ actually be relevant and reliable makes DB feel unique when compared to the future series that spawned after. I was actually shocked at the number of appearances Great Ape Goku makes, I was expecting it to be more but eh I'm not complaining. The adult humor in the show is an amazing unexpected surprise. Unexpected because DB is way more lighthearted than DBZ, some of the jokes probably wouldn't even be around if it was a modern day show.
