This was awesome. I felt very entertained the entire time and it's such a nice spin on the movie's story!
This is the He-Man thing again, Netflix takes a brand people love, gets rid of the male protagonist and bam! They've got something new.
I was expecting an adaptation of the comics and was excited enough for that, but then they went in a totally new direction and I got even happier.
It was so fun to watch a new story with these characters. Packed with weird humor and lots of laughs - just like I’d expect from O’Malley and Wright.
Totally worth the hype.
(And a special shoutout to Anamanaguchi - fantastic as always!)
Quick note: The actual nature of this show is kept a secret within its own marketing. So in order to fully talk about it, I'm gonna have to somewhat break that surprise in this review. (No major story spoilers here, don't worry.) Unless you're hesitant about this mini-series, I highly suggest just going in blind.
Be advised.
"It's never too late to clean up a mess."
I don't know what the hell people call whatever genre of storytelling this is. Alternate timeline remake? Sequel? Commentary? Whatever it is, I fucking love how more recent video games and movies are taking the approach, as it brings new life to an adaptation.
The original Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World film took me by surprise, back when I watched it in theaters in 2010 without any context to the books or the story itself. I fell in love with its world and characters, despite the flaws I've been continuing to find upon my hundreds of rewatches.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off gave me that same sense of surprise, in addition to my love for the direction it decided to take. This is more than a straight adaptation of the books/game/film, but an ambitious remix that goes after all those flaws. It manages to improve upon its source material by acknowledging it and fixing the broken spots, while simultaneously diverging from the familiar path to deliver a completely new story. In a sense, this IS a sequel, but one that's friendly to newcomers (although I highly recommend watching the film or reading the books beforehand). Some jokes and cameos are new, while others are remixed callbacks to some of the best lines in the 2010 film that just work well in execution.
As it leans more into a slice-of-life narrative with its much longer runtime, it manages to go more in-depth with its characters, big and small, tackling each of their emotions and flaws, which is something the movie didn't really touch on. It acts as both a closer analysis on what came before it, and a satisfying farewell(?) to the characters we've known for more than a decade now. I just wished a few characters got utilized a bit more, such as Knives Chau and Kim Pine.
As for its style, this show nails its format in animation and soundtrack. Everything is drawn similarly to that of the original books, but to a much more noticeable height of quality. Not just in the action shots, but there are several moments where certain objects in the frame will shift and give off a ghosting effect, performing an artificial camera focus for a 2D-animated cartoon. I wouldn't necessarily call it "anime" though, aside from the small Japanese touches.
The soundtrack is a surprising banger, too! Anamanaguchi did an incredible job with original tracks, while the show throws in some surprise licensed songs from artists like Metric and Johnny Cash. It all blends incredibly well with the world and action; I'd say even better than the original film.
I really enjoyed by time with Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. It's a short enough, yet engaging mini-series that respects the audience's time, has great binge potential, and can be watched over and over again like 2010's film. An absolutely stellar companion piece to the series, and probably one of the best animated shows I've seen in a while! I think I'm in lesbians all over again.
Ah yes let's kill main character in first episode, what could possibly go wrong (looking at you "He-Man")
My thoughts while watching episode 1:
- this is visually charming;
- how much did they spend for the cast?;
- mh, actually, visually, I like it less than I thought;
- oh, so it's a super super loyal adaptation of the comicbook? No, wait, someone told me there's a twist;
- jeez, keeping the dialogues exactly as they were in the comicbook is not a great idea. They are meant to be read, they feel really stiff in a visual medium;
- this is incredibly boring;
- oh, so that's the twist. I kike it. OK, you have my curiosity.
My thoughts while watching episode 2:
- this is incredibly boring;
- what? We are still at minute 15? Fuck it, I'm giving up, there's no point, I'm literally falling asleep.
Now, this clearly is a superficial judgment and I'm sure that if I insisted and watched the rest of it I wouldn't hate it but I'm at a point in my life where if I'm watching a TV show, I'm incredibly bored and I think the best case scenario is "I didn't hate it", well, I can invest my time in something else.
Why is Scott Pilgrim barely in the show?
I absolutily had no idea that the show was going to be different than the original graphic novels. Which is exactly why I loved it. Immediately in the first episode, when it begins to become something else, I just had to sit there and laugh. It's a new Scott experience with more of Ramona too. More of everybody. It's was a fun ride in it's whole.
what can i say about this f masterpiece? MILLENIAL POWER!!!!!!!!!!
I was so much excited while watching it with new premises and the super crafty 2d animation.The character design,the soundtracks and the extraordinary plot with some exhilarating easter eggs of the Scott Pilgrim movie and other famous movies-all made it a love in a go experience. I'm just so into it...
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is a great proof of concept. This is literally Marvel's 'What If' show with Scott Pilgrim instead of Marvel Superheros. The animation is marvelous. The story...it's simply not Scott Pilgrim. In the years in the future, when I will fell like it's time to rewatch THE Scott Pilgrim story, I am sure as hell not going to re-watch this. I feel that the marketing on this was misleading. I understand the problematics on spending millions on a story already told twice could be a risk, but then do not market it as such. Everyone was expecting this to be 1:1 from the comic. It's not. It's very not. It's an experiment. It's a What If. It's a proof of concept. Which is totally fine, but then market it as such.
If you ever wanted a Scott Pilgrim show with barely any Scott Pilgrim in it, then this one’s for you!
It's like the comic came to life. Nicely done!
The English audio is AWFUL!!! The actors, especially the one playing Ramona, sound like they are reading the script for the first time out loud in their toilets and are bored as hell. The Japanese dub is night and day, it made me stop hating this and actually enjoy the show. The original audio should be marked as Japanese, since this was made in Japan, the Japanese voice actors are actually acting and the animation in synced to the Japanese audio rather than English.
People should give the japanese audio at least a try. They won´t regret it.
I got mixed feelings about this. I'm not sure what the target audience is between newcomers and people that know the comic/movie.
It's definitely less interesting than the original, so fans will be disappointed. And even it's done in a way that do not require previous knowledge and there are some good ideas, most seem designed for people that know the original while really removing what would have been fun for newcomers.
Overall it's totally ignorable. That makes me give the show a lesser note than any of the individual episodes.
Of course, original voice cast is a great thing. And yet, it feel weird all through. Maybe cause it was developed in Japanese, and that most of them are not used to voicing ? It never quite fit.
One of the best achievements of the movie is how it managed to bring to real life the stupid effects that really belonged in a comic. So actually having it in animation makes it more normal I guess, and it loses charm.
For instance most of the "fights" are incredibly boring.
Having an original story instead of recreating the movie ? Good idea.
Actual story ? Kinda lame for more than the first half.
The meta is great though, if you're into this kind of things (and of course if you know the original). Notably the part where they create the movie with all actors also being characters.
Discovering the exes one by one was a fun part of the original, here they're dumped all at once, and if it's kinda acceptable if you know them already, it really removes the shock value and fun for new watchers.
Ep 1: Regular story, a bit slow, nice twist that signal the change at the end.
Ep 2: Introducing all exes at once was a bad idea. Huge fight that really feel out of place since there wasn't a first one.
Ep 3-4-5-6: Ramona making peace with her exes, just lame and story stagnates. Meta movie is cool. The Wallace + Todd was the most original/interesting change.
Ep 7-8: The real story. The show would have been acceptable if it was all aligned with these.
Fun rehash of the graphic novel / movie that is enjoyable and engaging, despite its distractingly rough animation and lack of iconic needle drops.
Works in remarkable concert with the graphic novel and film, forming a third tentpole of the Scott Pilgrim universe that also stands on its own merit.
An absolute blast and instant classic.
It delivers on entertaining and delivers a story with some ups and downs, but it delivers.
Perhaps a little more development would have improved the work. The animation and dubbing (Latin) is good.
The plot is good, the way it was carried out could have been improved and the ending could have been more developed.
In conclusion young old Neil, is God at writing....
9/10
It is saved by the animation, I really liked the character design and the dubbing, that's why I give it this rating.
Ramona Hot... ;3
A surprisingly fresh adaptation of an already great movie and comic series with an all-star cast!
First of all, this is NOT an adaptation.
We had a great Comic, an awesome Movie and a wonderful Videogame, it was about time to get an amazing Anime.
I loved that it wasn't another adaptation and instead a re-telling/what if story, so we get something new and different after all these years.
Let's hope we don't have to wait another +10 years for new Scott Pilgrim content.
Show and season 1 rated a 6.4
The most enjoyable part of the whole movie is its above-average production. Not only the production, but also Abel Gongora's direction is at a creative and unique level, something so present in the works of Science Saru. As for the text, its main value must be attributed to the charisma of the work. It's a fun piece of work, with charismatic characters and a curious narrative. But... Overall, it's very simple. There aren't any striking values, and the only character who has her nuances is Ramona, for her text on "running away from what she loves".
It's the Scott Pilgrim Mercy Run
we need a spin-off where 7 evil trakt user hunt down Scott Pilgrim for saying he likes Oppenheimer more than Barbie

Yes yes I only watched two episodes, but they changed so much about the source material and the pacing is absolute ass so I can't deal with it. I was so looking forward for this too but m a n.
