Advanced 10 heart ratings
Ratings have been hotly debated issue for quite some time on trakt. Any change we made had to be done right, and we think we've come up with a great update that caters to all users. There are solid use cases for both a simple and an advanced rating system. So we decided to do both! We're pleased to announce a new advanced 10 heart rating system! It's completely up to you - keep the simple love/hate system or switch to the new 10 heart scale.
A lot of you wanted a 10 point scale to mirror what IMDB and similar sites offer. You can now port over your ratings directly with no data loss. In fact, check out TraktRater (from Damien who created the awesome MediaPortal trakt plugin) - a windows app that will import your ratings from IMDB, TVDb, and TMDb automatically. A lot of people also liked the simplicity of the love/hate system since 10 choices is too many for them. You are more than welcome to continue using that system. Even better, you can toggle between simple and advanced ratings without losing any of your data.
What's it look like?
Once you enable advanced ratings, each movie, show, and episode summary page has a new 10 heart scale. Just hover over the heart and it slides out to reveal the 10 choices. Unrating works the same, just click again to unrate it.
How can I enable advanced ratings?
When you visit your dashboard, you'll have the opportunity to choose your rating system. As mentioned earlier, you can toggle between the rating systems at any time in your settings page.
Quick icons
You'll notice the heart badge has been replaced with a badge indicating the 1-10 advanced rating. The quick icons have also been revamped to better accomodate the 10 hearts by moving some of the other actions over the poster. A few new things have been added too. You can now add any item to a custom list. For movies and episodes, you can add them to your collection.
Dedicated ratings page in your profile
With all these changes, we felt ratings should get bumped up to their own section in your profile. They've been moved from your library into a new section with many more features. By default, it shows all ratings sorted by the most recent first. You can filter for specific ratings too - advanced mode will show 1-10 and simple mode will show the familiar love/hate choices. A few additional display options have been added too.
New episode summary page
The episode summary page was in major need of a refresh. It made perfect sense to do so as part of this ratings update. The new page not only looks better, it also adds quite a few new features. Navigating episodes is more clear, there is better room for ratings, and there are episode specific stats similar to what shows and movies already had.
Plugin and app support
MediaPortal has already been fully updated to support advanced ratings, grab at least version 1.6. Support is already planned for the other media centers so stay tuned for updates.
SeriesGuide has a beta release with advanced ratings support. The other mobile apps will get updates in the near future as well.
If you're on windows, TraktRater is a great way to import your ratings from IMDB, TVDb, and TMDb automatically.
It's important to note that nothing will break when using these apps. If you have advanced ratings on and use an app that doesn't support it yet, it will simply register as a 1 (hate) or 10 (love) when you rate something. You are more than welcome to contact your favorite app developer and suggest (nicely of course!) that advanced ratings support be added in.
API updates
There have been a ton of API updates related to advanced ratings. Some are brand new methods and others are updated. Most developers are already aware of the API changes, but if not make sure to check out the API docs for more explanation. The trakt API google group is a great place to ask questions too.
