Tarzan 1999

From an animation point of view, this is perhaps one of the most stunningly realised and beautiful pieces that Disney have produced. The technique they developed to show Tarzan swinging and moving around the jungle produces some thrilling sequences, most notably a montage showing Tarzan growing from boy to man and a fun chase through the jungle as Tarzan rescues Jane. It is a shame then that while the film is watchable, Tarzan as a character is a little bland, though Minnie Driver has a lot of fun as Jane and helps to make the relationship between her and Tarzan compelling enough. Equally problematic are the comedy sidekicks - it's an attempt to replicate the Timon/Pumbaa routine, but all they do is simply shout and bumble their way through the film and become increasingly annoying. Phil Collins music here actually works very well within the film, with songs largely set to those beautiful animated montages rather than performed by the characters and these moments are easily the best part of the film.
