Piranha (2010)
Each year the population of sleepy Lake Victoria, Arizona explodes from 5,000 to 50,000 residents for the annual Spring Break celebration. But then, an earthquake opens an underwater chasm, releasing an enormous swarm of ancient Piranha that have been dormant for thousands of years, now with a taste for human flesh. This year, there's something more to worry about than the usual hangovers and complaints from locals, a new type of terror is about to be cut loose on Lake Victoria.

I'm with you Sean, I really think they hit the mark they were aiming for. I missed it at the cinema and regret it because the 3D money shots looked like they would have been cool. I watched it with a couple of friends and had a laugh over a few beers. I watched it again with my teenage kids and it still hit all the same marks for them, so it wasn't the beer :)

Jerry O'Connell played it perfectly; a total a-hole who meets the most perfect demise for him I don't think that is a spoiler as the moment he opens his mouth for the first time you are just counting down the minutes until he bites it.

Ving Rhame's has a classic moment that shows he's all that is man.

A nice genre nod at the beginning too.

The obligitory gratuitous nudity scene was inspired, as its balletic nature nearly stops the film dead and serves it to you on a platter. If you are going to tick the box, tick it well.

The characters are all one dimensional and I never expected more, it's all about the deaths. Some of them reached laughter at WTF?! levels and required a rewind to appreciate the set up and for those so inclided the work of the FX/Makeup crew.

So, is it great? Wow, not by a long shot.

Is it fun? With a group of friends sure, on your own maybe not quite as much. You just have to put your brain in neutral.

The movie is what it is, described below. An 80's throwback that suceeds. It was worhty of the watercooler discussion in the office the following day.
