Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927)
The first film from director Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau to be finished in the States. The film has the tangible elements of German expressionism. Murnau received a big budget from Fox and the ability to make all the filmmaking decisions. The film has been called the greatest silent film of all time.

First silent film I've seen. Started off really really good, then took a complete 180 and went into a long boring section then ended pretty well. When it was good it was very good. It sounds weird to say about a film from 1927, but the special effects were really good and really well used. Also cool that when it comes to the whole "show don't tell" thing, this film didn't really have a choice and definitely did the show bit well.
