Anyone But You 2023

I really wish this movie was UNWRITTEN.

When the most enjoyable part of a movie is the end credits, you know you've got a problem. Very disappointed with this one and honestly confused how it's getting so much positive attention and doing well at the box office. The writing felt like Hallmark/Lifetime took a stab at R-rated. I know "chemistry" is subjective, but I didn't feel chemistry between any of these characters. And I don't know if the writing is to blame, but Sydney Sweeney wasn't really working for me at all. I've been a fan of Glen Powell since the excellent Everybody Wants Some (an R-Rated rom-com that is actually good, go watch that instead), so I was very much expecting to enjoy this, but even he wasn't able to save it.

6/10 fair

It’s a romcom and it’s a fair one at that, no point picking holes, it does what it says on the tin……
The cast is okay and do what is asked of them, the storyline is the normal romcom formate and it doesn’t deviate from it….

You won’t necessarily remember the movie but you will enjoy it well watching it.

Could it have been better?
Probably….
Does it matter?
Not really….

Switch of your brain and watch it and enjoy it, then move on to the next movie you want to watch….

Oh, I did enjoy the credits singalong, very enjoyable and I hope they all enjoyed filming it…..

Just a movie about two people that will occasionally make you laugh and sometimes make you groan, while not having the ability to help yourself thinking about taking both of them on in a threesome despite your status as a straight person.

Romantic Comedies are f****** back and I love it!!!!

loading replies

Why was this movie ever made? Sydney I know you said you are struggling to make earns meet, but this is not it. You are a better actress than this. This is a MUST NOT WATCH!

loading replies

It was exactly what it should be. Nothing spectacular, but it's a fun watch.

loading replies

So much hype... I was hoping for spectacular chemistry and a better written plot. The over-the-top acting by the cast was just bad.
I laughed when Dermot Mulroney was trying to learn to dive. It was the best part of the movie!
I did still watch the whole thing, but it wasn't much better than every other rom-com.
I will watch anything with Glen Powell in it anytime, though!

Like man boobs: unnecessary and redundant, but they make a cute pair.

Love the L2 tram representation !!

loading replies

Yes, this is a rom com that does all the cliche tropes, but it was pretty enjoyable. It will work for males and females in a similar way that The Proposal did. I won't mind rewatching this one when the wife picks it out!

Rating: 3.5/5 - 80% - Would Recommend

loading replies

Can't believe I'm the comment with the highest rating. It might be because we've been starved of great romcoms of late but I thought this was pretty great. Predictable, but only because it does end how you expect it to. It did have me doubting myself a couple of times along the way though!

loading replies

I feel like my time was completely wasted. The writing and logic were very poor.

loading replies

Very typical romantic movie, nothing really special about it, except for Sydney's boobies that she tries to show every chance she got (no complains here). And of course the whole freaking movie has to revolve around lgbt crap. Hallmark romantic movies are even better than this.

loading replies

It was a nostalgic but also shoking experience. This funny movie was a real proof, that time flyes: Dermot Mulroney once played grooms and boyfriend-for-hire (The Wedding Date in 2005). Now he was the father of the one of the brides. Unwritten was a hit when I was a kid, but I still remembered the lyrics.

This movie was a steaming pile of dung from beginning to end. Well, I can’t say “end” because I couldn’t stomach anymore by the midpoint of the movie. I should have seen it coming after the awful setup. If you haven’t seen the movie, I’ll sum it up for you: there are two attractive co-stars that spend much of the movie in various states of undress. In between these events, you can expect a heavy dose of site gags with a music bed playing underneath the mess, which is ALWAYS an indication that the director knows that a movie is a steaming pile. Also, I don’t know what was worse – the dialog, or the performances by the secondary characters. Just brutal.

Oh no, they hate each other! This romance is doomed.

The only redeeming feature of this movie is... Oh no, wait, there's no redeeming feature.

Even the obligatory nudity is completely unsexy and uninteresting. She looks up his bumhole... Genius comedy writing.

I went into this movie with low expectations, especially since this genre isn't typically Sydney Sweeney's forte. Unfortunately, my instincts were correct. This film falls into the all-too-familiar trap of Hollywood's attempts at "woke" storytelling, completely missing the mark. Despite being labeled as a romantic comedy, the issues run deeper than just genre.

Recent revelations about Disney's "inclusion standards" shed light on the underlying problem. It seems like if this film had been crafted without the pressure of conforming to these standards, both Sydney and her co-star could have had a stronger script and character development to work with. Instead, we're left with a cringe-worthy mess.

Sydney should stick to roles like those in "Nocturne" (2020) and "The White Lotus" (Season 1), where her talents truly shine. Otherwise, she risks being pigeonholed into roles that rely solely on physical appearance rather than her acting prowess. She's capable of so much more.

Sorry as a man I'm meant to believe that Glen Powell is just like every other dude on the planet.
It's lazy writing for me when you introduce a character as a nice guy but then quickly try and make him a knobhead. The humour is fine, It's pretty average when it comes to a rom-com. 4th Hemsworth was funny and the best part of this.
Definitely wasn't easy watching this when you're surrounded by women and then a hot sex scene comes up.

can someone please help the stylists that dress Sydney Sweeney find something that actually fits her jesus christ the poor woman

loading replies

I fucking love that they spent the whole filming time playing Unwritten and having everyone sing and dance to it just so they could compile the scene at the end. Best part of the movie!

loading replies

Not the best movie ever, but fuck, Sydney Sweeney is an outstanding actress.

I rate it "it doesn't matter where you drown, is it Australia in." Anyone But You" or a pool in utopian "Handmaid's Tale" " out of ten.

loading replies

Rich people do rich people things and have rich people problems. Okay it's a romcom but why is it always the same type of people? Flying for a wedding to Australia?
The plot is easy and there a some funny points... that's all.

loading replies

eh it's okay i guess

loading replies

Very low expectations from the stereotypical American Valentine Day comedy. But the acting was really bad here.

loading replies

When you see all the advertisement, you would expect some sort of quality. But this advertisement was very much needed because the movie is unbelievable cringy and sucks. Even Hallmark can make better ones.

loading replies

Sick of how much advertising and sooooo much promoting the movie in social, every reel with the dance.
Yes the only reason to see it is Sydney,no doubt. No it is not the best rom com of the last years, not even close. Nothing spectacular (except Sydney) nothing original in the story (except Sydney's cleavage) and i will only give the whole cast and actors at the dance montage at the end. I will acknowledge the great chemistry between them.
Everything else is in the trailer, all the "funny" lines and scenes.

Also please do not compare Sydney with Daddario, Daddario wins.

loading replies

Watched 30 min, was not good.

loading replies

There is not a single surprise in this movie's plot. And that's a good thing.

loading replies

You're all here to see Sydney, and Anyone But You's biggest trick is that you'll see more of the city in Australia than you will of top billed Sweeney. If you're just here for the eye candy, I implore you to watch The Voyeurs instead. Not only is it a fun, pulpy erotic thriller, it also has way more Sweeney (nips and all) and isn't surrounded by this vapid "friends-to-enemies-to-lovers" BookTok drivel. I've really got to stop taking movie recommendations from the women at work.

A one time fun movie to watch :)

Imperfect, though 'Anyone But You' does deliver amusing moments and works nicely as a romcom.

It usually isn't the best sign when the end credits are a film's best bit, which is the case here (s/o Natasha Bedingfield!), though thankfully that statement is only an additional positive for this Will Gluck directed movie. It does do clichés, but does at least add some freshness to the genre.

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell portray great chemistry, I enjoyed both performances. Sweeney's stylist killed it I gotta say, heck even Powell's too. Some of their, and others', dialogue is too manufactured at times, but that be just a minor complaint to be honest. The rest of those onscreen are satisfactory. I must say the director's father, Peter Gluck, gave me one of the film's stronger chuckles in his tiny role on the plane sat next to Sweeney - perfect line delivery!

I had fun with this. As already noted, it isn't anything all that standout but it delivered what I evidently wanted. Solid. The William Shakespeare stuff was a bit forced, mind you.

loading replies

This is a pretty shell of a movie. Not a lot of development or answers, just hot people having a go at each other. I do think both leads will go onto to have solid careers. There are definitely a few funny moments and this movie in all is harmless. It’s just very shallow. Good background movie

loading replies

This movie is like if they had AI watch every season of Love is Blind and then write a script off the pod conversations.

In other words, we're supposed to read a deep connection into the shallowest, most basic dialogue because it's two pretty people.

The conflict is paper thin and absurd, highlighting how immature these characters are, which makes it impossible for me to root for them or care about them at all. They're both insufferable to boot - what a treat /s.

Pretty people. Pretty setting. Pretty boring.

Why the hell is Gata in this movie? Im so confused at the purpose of his character.

Cute rom-com. Lots of laughs and a fun premise. Very HOT cast, maybe a little too beefcakey and busty for me. Mostly cheesy costume design. But overall a fun watch.

This Movie is so bad..
my wife and I thought the Trailer looked fun and thought we’d have a little Romcom evening with some cocktails and popcorn..
The Movie was so badly written and played out by actors who thought they were making a good movie.. just terrible.
The Trailer makes you think they are a couple already together working through some problems as they seem to have come to hate each other. THAT would have been a fun Movie I think. Instead it’s just two wining way too good looking people who seem to be completely dumb dull and boring in every aspect. We laughed once at the scene in the Plane. The rest left us as cold as the cocktails..
Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

Please treat your one night whatevers better please.

As it is a romcom, I can't be serious but it's actually pretty funny. I liked the tight ensemble, it was easy to understand everyone's relation to each other and it's just a nice time. I have to say that the performances felt a little forced, some lines were delivered too stiffly or plainly - and the biggest culprit was Sydney Sweeney which is odd because I know she can do better. The biggest part that felt unbelievable was that these two get together in one day and instantly come apart without even trying? Idk...that's a little odd.

Casting: 4/10
Acting: 1/10 (I've seen porn with better acting)
Plot: 3/10 (dog sht "meet the parents" wannabe)
Music: 4/10 (all of it...)

This is one of the worst romcom movies I've seen and I got a low standard for those.

The biggest issue was the female lead... Acting range of a brick wall.

loading replies

Chick flick that's supposed to be a RomCom... without the com part.
Completely predictable from start to finish... it's almost like I've seen this movie before.....

Plenty of typical woke stuff...
Sydney Sweeney is just a flag chick with big tits

5.5/10

Film 131 (Goal: 300) of 2024:

All these rom coms are generally the same and that's not a bad thing, you just know where everything is going to go and what you're going to get. And that's the same here. Anyone But You is a pretty standard rom com that did surprisingly well. The highlight for me was the chemistry of the two leads, with Powell and Sweeney playing off each other well. And the real star is the city of Sydney. It's great to see a Hollywood movie set in Sydney, and to see places that I have walked and been to many times, be featured whether prominently or as background dressing.

This is a perfectly acceptable movie, but the city it's set in may be the real star.

loading replies

Cheesy, predictable, and freaking stupid.

But the film has a certain charm, which I can't help but enjoy. If this is the return of early 2000's romcoms, I'm OK with that.

loading replies

Rated a Connor 5, normal 6.2

loading replies

The acting was a bit lackluster, but overall it wasn't that bad for a rom-com. :)

loading replies

basically the new version of "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days"

loading replies

I really enjoyed this film. The cast was great, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell had great chemistry, and the story moved along at a good pace w/ a fair amount of amusing dialogue. I don't really ask for much more from romantic comedies.

loading replies

"Door's that way. If you are looking to sneak out. I know that's your thing."

I remember Twitter trying to shame this movie into cancellation so it brings me much joy to say it is an actual funny rom com with good chemistry.

loading replies

One of those rom coms to shut off your brain and just chill:ok_hand_tone1:
There was a lot of jumping through hoops for the plot but I did have a decent time watching, it’s one of those rom coms where it could be better or worse.

P.S sydney sweeney and glen powell absolutley sold me on their chemistry

loading replies

One of the most romantic movies I’ve seen a while! Very chill and classic romcom

loading replies

Not breaking any new ground or sterotypes here, but an enjoyable watch full of the usual romantic clichés swoon-worthy 8-packs and pretty-priveledge. So… if you're in the mood for a feel-good escape, go forth and spoil yourself.

Needs more boobs, less ass.

loading replies

I loved it soooo much ! It's was nice , funny and romantic! I definitely recommend it

loading replies

It's a rom-com, and it delivers. It's not the best written thing ever seen, even for a rom-com but it is entertaining, it makes you laugh a bit, which is nice.

loading replies

Perfectly funny romcom w moments of horrific cringe. I'm forgiving some elements I didn't enjoy because those we did enjoy we enjoyed a lot. Great chemistry and silly raunch abound. 7.3.

loading replies

There are hundreds of romantic comedies like 'Anyone but You', both thematically and in terms of story. In the recent past, I'm thinking of 'Ticket to Paradise' with George Clooney and Julia Roberts, for example. But there is also a reason why this formula is often used. It certainly works well in this movie, thanks in particular to the chemistry between the two leads, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell.

The middle section is usually the highlight in this kind of movie, because that's where you can expect the most laughs. In this case, this observation also applies. The other parts are a bit overly contrived, but that doesn't bother too much.

Overall, 'Anyone but You' manages to accomplish its most important task: it is entertaining and holds your attention. No surprises should be expected, but to be fair, that was certainly never the objective.

loading replies

I honestly didn't have any expectation at all for Anyone but You, but what can I say? Surprisingly I was surprised. Although Will Gluck and Ilana Wolpert didn't do anything extraordinary while writing/directing this, it is still a pretty decent watch.
The jokes mostly hit right in the spot, although sometimes it was a bit tooo weird and strange.
Despite. I had a fun time watching it and if you want to laugh then sure watch this one!

My personal rating:
-Plot (Story Arc and Plausibility): 6/10
-Attraction (Premise & Entertainment Value): 7.5/10
-Theme (Identity & Depth): 6.5/10
-Acting (Characters & Performance): 6/10
-Dialogue (Storytelling & Context): 8/10
-Cinematography (Visual Language & Lighting, Setting, and Wardrobe): 6/10
-Editing (Pace & Effects): 7/10
-Soundtrack (Sound Design & Film Score): 7/10
-Directing (Vision & Execution): 6/10
-The “It” Factor (One-of-a-Kind & Transcendent): 5/10

Overall: 7/10 || 65/100
