College 1927

Very dull, minor Keaton. He plays an egghead who goes to college, then tries out for various athletic teams in order to impress the love interest. The physicality I love so much about Keaton isn’t really on display here–watching him miss the high jump bar or have a fielding error on the baseball diamond just doesn’t have the stakes that you find in some of his better movies. I’d avoid this one.

I've expected a lot worse going into this film, which isn't among Buster Keaton's most beloved ones to begin with. Well, in retrospect that is. At the box office, this was a huge hit. I think College makes for an hour of fine entertainment. It's far removed from a failure like Three Ages and i even like it a lot better than, say, Seven Chances. There's not a lot going on in terms of plot, but Buster's acrobatic stunts make it a joy to behold his protagonist sucking at sports until he finally doesn't. On the negative side, this also contains some racist blackface humor, the kind of which you kinda come to expect from silent comedies and which also plagues a few other Buster Keaton films, but the example on show here is an especially blatant one.
