Pretty good police, cat-and-mouse type heist movie. Actors were good, but some bothersome holes. Get out and confront stuck, heavily armed armed bandits in the middle of civilians? Yeah, right. Type of heist, and its dynamics was interesting. Good gun battles.
The plot supposes that cops bending the rules, are in the right somehow? Nick did multiple things that Major Crimes simply would not allow him to do, while he was not even undercover. He summed it up best when he said 'we are the bad guys'. I was really hoping the heist crew got away with it, because they simply had better standards than the cops in this. So when the police suddenly became 'the good guys', I became confused and even frustrated.
Really enjoyed the action sequences, and even the rest of the movie, except for anytime Nick was on screen.
Solid heist movie. A little too long and not enough action in the middle. The opening is great action piece to start but then it slows down too much until the heist. The middle is filled with some boring family drama but some cool manly stuff like strip clubs and shooting ranges. O'Shea Jackson Jr. really stands out as a great actor. Everyone else does a decent job. Worth a watch if you like macho man movies or heist movies.
Terrible movie. Complete waste of my time. Seems like the script was build to make the things very easy for the cops and while you wait for some surprise to come, big nothing happening.

Den of Thieves is like the male reproductive organ: exciting at each end but long and boring in the middle.
It's a trap most films of this genre fall into. An action scene at the beginning to grab our attention and one at the end for a climax, but in the middle nothing but cliches. And with the European version clocking in at TWO HOURS AND TWENTY MINUTES (WTF!?) there's a lot of room for cliches.
The renegade police squad as bent as the criminal gang they're pursuing is a cliche we've come to expect, but too much time is wasted demonstrating how '3-dimensional' and 'fleshed out' these men are. To be sure, there's enough beefcake here to choke the deepest of throats (Gerard Butler, Pablo Schreiber and 50 Cent are so cut their shirts keep falling off), so they're 3D and fleshed out all right, but family men? We're meant to believe they consider family important, yet the only proof of that we're given is they feel guilty every time they treat their families like shite.
It's a shame, really. Christian Gudegast does a competent job directing the action and suspense, but he should've stuck to that rather than drawing so heavily on the source material (a 1992 non-fiction book by Pulitzer Prize winning author James B. Stewart).
No, Den of Thieves is not the epic cops and robbers film it thinks it is. It's simply a giant fake boob: over-inflated, self-aggrandizing and not as unique as it thinks it is.
Good movie, good plot and great twist at the end.

This is like the poor man's Heat. If you start to think a little bit about the plot, everything breaks down.
Den of thieves is definitely a lesser Heat (1995) but it's surely a better Triple 9 (2016).

Solid cops-and-robbers action thriller. The heist is clever, there's some great action sequences, colourful characters and some genuine good acting, especially from Butler.
I'm so bored at these kind of twisted endings, it's just lazy and bad writing in my book. Look there, everything is totally different than you expected dang sigh
Also what's with all the testosterone? It was pretty ugly to watch, also it doesn't build any sympathy for any character.

To piggyback off of what I said in my check-in, I was able to watch this movie with a new perspective - this definitely had writers/advisors that knew some of the lingo and procedures familiar with this genre. At the same time there was some Hollywood magic dust sprinkled in here and there that had my eyes rolling! The final product was a movie that didn't quite know what it wanted to be - it started off with an intense gunfight that surprisingly led to a long middle act that was spent attempting to build character development. The noticeably cliché scenes were often inadvertently humorous! The final gun battle also reaffirmed how awesome the final gun battle in Heat is. But overall "Den of Thieves" is an enjoyable cop/heist movie, but no new ground was broken.
Tries and fails at being a 21st century Heat.
Holy shit, this movie took the biggest quality 180-turn I've ever witnessed. About a half hour into Den of Thieves, I was ready to call it quits. Slap a 'Please stop' and a one star rating on this and walk out, but miraculously, the clusterfuck of a script climbed itself out of it's conventional and edgy teenager levels of writing. It was able to correct it's under-cooked meat and present a thrilling second and third act. I can even pin-point the minute it happened. It's when Gerard Butler is at his daughter's school, he's talking to her through the fence, but when he gets back to his car, he breaks down in tears. Seen the scenario a million times before, but from that scene on, the big heist the movie had been horribly building up to started to happen. Let me just say, the editing, deliberate lack of music, the tension, the quick camera cuts, acute attention to detail, the raw acting, is all, pardon me, really fucking good. Unlike the previous fifty minutes or so, none of the dialogue or acting felt hokey, the performances are intense, and it's mature use of weapon handling just added to the realism. It's just shocking to me, because I've seen movies like Marauders, where the entire film reeks of amateurish direction and horrible trope-y childish ideas, and the whole movie is like that. "Oh man, this thug cop who doesn't play by the rules likes to party, drink beer, smoke, and beat criminals up. He's so cool." Den of Thieves starts off in that territory, horrible, criminal levels of bad, but inverted dramatically and turned great. I want to know what happened behind-the-scenes and who wrote the first hour of the movie. Everything involving the heist and subsequent chase is great. Go see this, just show up a half hour late, you won't miss much.
A gritty crime thriller, Den of Thieves is too dark and ambiguous for its own good. The story follows an elite unit of the LA sheriff's department that investigates a crew that's planning on robbing the Los Angeles Federal Reserve Bank. Gerard Butler, 50 Cent, and O’Shea Jackson Jr. lead the cast, and give fairly decent performances. However, the characters are one-dimensional stereotypes and the plot is formulaic with all the usual tropes and clichés of a typical heist film. Also, the film goes out of its way to blur the line between good guys and bad guys; which makes it hard to root for anyone. Still, the action scenes are intense and exciting (particularly the final shootout). And a couple of the plot-twists are kind of clever. Den of Thieves is entertaining, but without with a compelling story or characters it ends up being a second rate heist film.
Pretty decent movie, allthough more action was needed in the middle. Movie may have been stretched out too long, but wow I loved the plot :) Certainly worth a watch on a lazy sunday!

When glancing at the marketing for this movie i immediately wrote it off as garbage and went into it expecting another American Heist (2014) or worse. But honestly i was very surprised by how well made this movie was.
The plot is well written with well developed characters that have unique fleshed out stories. The heists are intelligent with a lot of intricate tactics that keep you on the edge of your seat. And there was even a cool twist at the end that i didn't see coming at all. The action scenes felt gritty and were filmed really well without any shaky cam. There is also no music during shootouts, which allows the brilliant sound design to shine through and create a sense of realism.
The only thing i didn't like was how the main police officer was able to deduce complex situations by simply staring into space for a few seconds. I don't buy that someone who carries himself like a drunk moron can also become some kind of autistic genius whenever he wants. 50 Cent also looked like he was sleep walking throughout the entire movie. I wish he would stay away from acting, because he has zero charisma and it doesn't look like he is even trying to get better. Thankfully his awful acting doesn't bring the movie down too much.
Den of Thieves is definitely in my top 5 heist movies of all time right now. It's worth watching if you're a fan of the genre.
This movie was great.... When it was called "Heat" and it starred Pacino and DeNiro. The "Usual Suspects" styled ending added needless flair to this morally murky story.
Well, this was not good. It wanted to be a Michael Mann/seedy LA flick but degenerated into a weak heist film. The problem with the heist genre is they always pre-suppose the thieves are geniuses that can anticipate every angle and frequently it has you believe that something that absolutely couldn't be predicted was key to them pulling the heist off. I found the flick overwrought and tedious. Action was missing in the middle 90 minutes of the movie. Ugh. 5/10
A fairly good heist movie. I've definitely seen a lot worse, and going into this movie expected as much. I was however, not let down. The movie starts off with a pretty awesome intro, with amazing music to back it up; one of the better title shots that i've seen this year. It was good to see Pablo Schreiber in a leading role, I was a fan of his work on OITNB.

This was mediocre crap. First, what's w/ the multicultural gangs in this?!? Second, the LA County Sheriff's Department has a long, long history of white nationalism and neo-Nazism. In fact, they've had multiple neo-Nazi gangs in their own ranks. They're not heroes. It's a shame that they lived in the end of this film. Also, this was literally 75 minutes longer than it needed to be. What a waste of perfectly good film stock. The end just completely rips off The Usual Suspects, but this film wasn't even in the same galaxy as that masterpiece., and just to show how bad it was, the writer/director still screwed up the ending.
Den of Thieves is a thrilling heist movie that hits all the right notes. The plot is excellent, with plenty of twists and turns that keep you guessing until the very end. The movie also features some truly great action sequences, from tense shootouts to high-speed car chases. What sets Den of Thieves apart is its attention to detail and its commitment to realism. The movie feels authentic, with a realistic portrayal of the criminal underworld.

I really enjoyed this faced paced movie which had a good balance between action and scheming. Gerard Butler played the perfect wild card cop who you never really knew which side he'd lean towards. Had a lot of surprising twists and never once left you bored.

Heat remake attempt #187. It's not too original, and was panned by critics, but it's not a horrible heist flick overall. The gun fights were entertaining and heisting was nice and heisty. Fifty Cent still can't act for shit, but thankfully they only gave him 7 lines of dialog.
Was everything that Takers wanted to be "God don't get me started on that movie". Solid action, solid build, decent swerve at the end.

There isn’t enough movies like Heat, really. The film borrows from Heat but has plenty of it’s own ideas.

Awful movie got bored quickly anyone who says they like the twist it was right in their face the whole time .. Donnie acts like a messenger not telling everything to the Feds or the Thieves you know where it will lead that he was playing with both sides .. Even putting the family of the lead fed and the black thief without any reason at all their just there to add and prolong the story ..
This overlong film robbed me of my time. With a mostly unlikeable cast of characters, and a story that isn't worth the running time, you might want to get your action fix elsewhere.
Not a bad movie, not a great movie. A bit long and a lot of things in the plot that add nothing to the movie. Didn't really care about movie going into parts of the characters lives. Basically a usual suspects meets the heat. Some reasonable action scenes, but nothing you haven't seen before.
I’m not sure who had the bright idea to hand over 30 Million Dollars to Christian Gudegast and let him write the screenplay and direct this piece of s****, but this is another prime example of letting a rookie director do something that’s way beyond his capabilities. Too many good people in Hollywood never get a chance. And then there is Gudegast who wrote the screenplay to London has Fallen and apparently someone without a brain said, hey can you write something just as bad and also direct?

Maybe a bit long in the middle, but the action in the beginning and the end was intense. Loved the shootout towards the end of the movie. Yea, most of the family character building and the twist at the end were superfluous, but I didn't think it dragged down the movie.
This movie had me hooked from moment one although I admit it is ridiculous. There are plot beats that had me wondering if I missed something and the ending is uh a bit nuts. But great action, a super badass, fresh off a bender Butler, and a very cool idea for a heist. Loved it. Even if it was 2hrs 30min.

I absolutely love Gerard Butler movies and it was a no brainer to go and see this one - unfortunately I just didn't get it. It's not his usual character and the action was a little sparse for my taste. Plenty of bullets flying around and a few funny moments but overall it left me a little flat. I wouldn't purchase this on Blu-ray - a fairly decent indicator.
