Epidemic 1987

Quite likely Lars von Trier's weakest film. After watching Element of Crime and being pleasantly surprised I expected more from this. Boring.

Despite LVT's debut film, "The Element of Crime," being a stiff and pretentious noir, "Epidemic” goes the opposite direction, opting for an easy-going half-assed mockumentary. Von Trier and one of his screenwriter friends have lost the script for their next film, and even though they only have a few days to write a new one, they prefer to mess around with the excuse of researching. Extracts from the film they are working on can also be seen in between the “real life” sequences. The film ends with a bang, but despite a couple of memorable scenes, the impression is that of witnessing an inside joke between Von Trier and his friends or colleagues, with little engagement for the audience.
