Quite simply one of the best films of the year.
Knew it would be cute...no idea it would be top notch
Great movie, deeply enjoyed by me, strongly recommend it. But even though it's an awesome fucking movie, it's nowhere as good as any of Waititi's other movies.
A perfect film for me. Hilarious and heartwarming and all the emotions in between. Quirky high quality performances but the film keeps it's independent local kiwi vibe (which i adored).
I love the overarching themes of irregular people finding companionship and love through adventure, rebellion, nature and shared experiences.
Some might feel this isn't as polished or as consistently laugh out loud as some of Waititi's other offerings but the wildness and uber quirkiness of this film - along with the hard hitting warm emotions / 100% positive feelings you're left with about humanity are what makes this one of my faves.
The humour in this is unreal - like just completely unexpected jokes come flying out of nowhere. I watched this with my mum and dad - the three of us are very different in humour and film tastes but we were all laughing out loud here. One of the early lines about Sam Neil's character carrying a hunted wild boar made me choke on my drink. Laughs don't stop from there.
The soundtrack reminded of 80s and 90s children's fantasy films at times, creating a magical and fun feeling. Paired with the writing / directing of scenes sometimes this film felt like a child's fever dream - a what if story of escaping modernity with your dogs and a loved grown up.
The only bad thing for me is that the film ended at all.
Thought I’d give a film a try, sat there in anticipation, when I reached “wanna help me gut it?” I kind of lost it, paused to let myself catch some breath, get more snacks, and settle for the evening. Wonderful.
Then that scene at the hut, where he’s talking about being made things and playing with himself I golden.
And the crispiest flakes, oh my gods. And probably one of the best car chase scenes I’ve ever seen. Great film.
(But am I alone with this phenomenon of whenever I see Sam Neil&”jungle”, I expect the hoot of a bronto? Good old times. whistles intro)
A sweet, genial film that doesn’t overstay it’s welcome, but who’s ending made me realize I had been more endeared and invested in these two characters than I thought.
Fantastic apart from "Chapter 10". That was just too daft for me.
Coming from Jojo rabbit to this the only reasonable conclusion must be that Taika Waititi is a genius.
Story is spectacular, performances are solid and the scenery is absolutely majestical .
I haven't laughed so much throughout a movie for a long time.
Truly majestical.
New ZeaLLLand's Most Wanted
Characters you can follow and have feelings about - for a while. Funny at times but not the always the type of humour I like. After the great set up you think it's going to be deeper emotional movie than it is. It was OK.
(Written July 4th) First movie of three for my first annual Forget the Fourth marathon. I hadn't even seen a trailer for this, I was just perusing RT and was shocked to see it at 100% out of 77 reviews.....AND....directed by the What We Do in the Shadows guy. How did I not hear about this?!
Anyway it didn't disappoint. Just an absolute delight! And the music was good too. Not as laugh a minute as shadows but tugs on the ol heart strings. Also reminds you of UP sometimes. In a good way.
So this is what passes for a good movie these days? Good luck with that.
I loved this movie. It was "majestically". Sam Neil is always a treat, and young Julian Dennison held his own. An independent film well written and well done. Some laugh out loud moments. Beautifully set in New Zealand. I give it a 9 (superb) out of 10. [Comedy, adventure, drama]
they used a repeating rifle without ANY form of bullet case makes repeating it kind of nonsense ¯_(ツ)_/¯
This is one of a weird independent movies that you either love or hate. It was ok in general, couldn't connect with its overdose of a plot which was strange. Very good soundtrack.
I regret sleeping on this so long. Such a great movie!
Taika Waititi has a very specific charm to everything he touches! I was very happy to finally get around to his final film before he was some big MCU director. Is this What We Do in the Shadows good? I wouldn’t say so, but it is a damn good addition to his catalog.
Rating: 4/5 - 85% - Would Recommend
This movie really had me going from laughing to sobbing to screaming in 3 seconds flat. It’s honestly just amazing. The actors play their parts so so well. The chapter about war is probably the most dumbstruck I’ve ever been after watching a scene. Just amazing
(9/10)
A great film with a bit Kiwi charm and comedy. Quite a nice break from the usual American comedy often seen in movies.
It's got everything. Get around it
A nice movie with Taika's quirky sense of comedy.
A difficult foster child finally finds his place on a remote New Zealand farm, runs into some tough luck and goes on the lam with a stern, stoic older man who makes no attempt to disguise his contempt for the boy. Despite what sounds like a very serious, dreary premise, there's a lot of innocent joy, moments of pure brightness and continuous good humor in Hunt for the Wilderpeople.
While they evade pursuit in the Kiwi wilds, Ricky (the adoptee in question) stands up for himself and earns a place in the old man's heart, plus a dash of respect, without losing any of the magnetic, irreverent qualities that make him so much fun to watch. Youthful Julian Dennison is a great fit for the part, playing the hard-edged wannabe thug with a straight face while smoothly indulging the sillier ticks and quirks that make it clear he's still young at heart. Sam Neill, nearly unrecognizable beneath a thick white beard and thicker local accent, makes a fine addition as his gruff, prickly counterpart; a bitter, lonesome man who still harbors the spark of warmth beneath several prohibitive outer layers.
Sweet and genuine, effortlessly funny and smoothly charming, it's partly Napoleon Dynamite, partly Wes Anderson and partly its own thing entirely.
This is a really beautiful film with a great message, charcaters are great with depth but easy to love highly recommend!
A charming little film. I agree with a previous review - it is probably a better version (definitely less tedious) of Up.

Loved it. The crazy bumped it up from a nice family coming of age movie to a fave
A very enjoyable film. It does not entirely fulfill itself but I still found myself happy in total. It has Waititi's humor throughout and some seriously laugh-out-loud moments. Ultimately it's a thoroughly charming story of two abandoned people of opposite origins bonding through shared experience.
Fun, entertaining, and touching movie. Not great, but certainly good. Some tough scenes with animals, so be careful if you have sensitive kids.
This movie was surprisingly good, the story line and jokes are quite simple, but the soundtrack is awesome. I'm still humming Nina Simone's Sinnerman.
This movie is weird, silly, fun and genuinely sweet. I enjoyed it very much.

This film is a alternative of the pixar film UP, how it should of been between the old man, and the boy ha so this is where Sam Neill got to, from hunting dinosaurs.. to now hunting wild pigs while on the run in the bush with a kid that calls him uncle.. This film takes you on a crazy, funny, wtf adventure, you also get a good sound track on the way, and you'll meet some weird characters on the way like Psycho Sam... yes that's what he calls himself..
