Mass 2021

This might be the best drama movie of 2021 for me. The dialogue is so well written and the acting very strong. A movie that'll probably bring tears to a lot of eyes. It sure did to mine.

Outstanding performances from all four leads. Truly riveting drama.

Maybe the most moving and emotional film ever made?

Mass doesn’t offer a clean, finite answer to its central question, rather choosing to show the messy, raw and emotional wreckage left behind in the aftermath of a school shooting. It’s moving and powerful seeing the parents on either side of the tragedy grapple with the reality they’ve been handed, over analysing everything to see if there was any hint or sign they could have spotted in the build up; whether anything they’d done had contributed. Some truly great performances lead by a delicate script that knows how to tactfully approach such a topic, Mass isn’t easy viewing, but those willing to face the grim subject matter will be rewarded with a contemporary great in the drama genre.

Mass - it's raw pain like this that I've seen/felt before. It's an "actors movie" and I honestly forgot they were acting. Every tear, outburst, and voice crack felt and sounded real. And yes, I cried, a lot.

Ann Dowd, Jason Isaacs, Martha Plimpton, and Reed Birney were all out of this world.

It's cold and haunting in its approach of filling in the gaps of events not shown on film for us the viewers. In a strange way, I found an element of the movie to be weirdly peaceful and safe. Four people in a room, sharing honestly about their thoughts and feelings, sharing stories, anger, tears, laughter, and filling in the blanks, but still walk away with closure, with no sense of emotional humiliation.

It's not an easy movie, nor should it be. It's a movie that's painfully tragic on the cover, but beautifully alive in its spirit.

Mostly excellent - as tragic and heart wrenching as you might expect  - though I felt it rushed through some of the characters emotions to get to the final resolution. Still a great film though and marvellously played by the cast.

Some of the dialogue felt disjointed and unnatural, but at least Linda's last story closed the film on a high point.
I think We Need to Talk About Kevin and A Silent Voice (Koe no Katachi) were much better films talking about school violence and bullying from the perpetrator's POV.

The reconciliation meeting, or what can be called, between victims (all are) of a massacre in a high school offers a chamber film that is supported by the extraordinary performances of the four actors and actresses. There is some manipulation in a text that leads the viewer from one side to the other, trying to establish empathies. But despite this, it proposes a deep reflection on what is the germ of violence.
