Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart on the same stage - BLISS! I first saw this play at Toronto's Royal Alexandra Theatre with Sir Ralph Richardson and Sir John Gielgud, when I was studying for my Master's in Theatre. I remember how they skillfully pulled the audience into a dark, uneasy sense of dangerous foreboding. So, when I heard about this National Theatre Live production, with another pair of accomplished thespians, I could hardly wait to see it. My anticipation was well rewarded, the acting was superb, the story was crafted with a delightful mix of comedy, pathos for aging greatness (characters not actors), peril of a game for superiority, and an ever present unease of threat. It was a privilege to see such fine work in a local setting. I give it a 9 (superb) out of 10. I saw this at Park Lane Cineplex he evening of 15 December 2017.
