Saving General Yang 2013

Middling yarn of a tried and perhaps tired story of the bravery and sacrifices of the Yang family (the heroics of the father and the seven sons). Perhaps because of being a well-known tale in pop Chinese culture, the screen writers did not bother to establish the characters, thus leaving them mostly as 2D card-boards. One after another of the sons sacrificed and died in returning their battle fallen father home. For those who already knew the story, this reenactment is visually pleasing, somewhat better than average choreographed and mildly entertaining. For those who are new to the story, this is puzzling yet predictable and perfunctory in story execution. In general, it is not bad as a Saturday afternoon popcorn action flick.
