Absolute mastermind of a concept, the synopsis alone made me wanna sit through this with a popcorn bucket excitedly which is probably why I'm a bit disappointed with the final product.
The cast, the camerawork, the direction and the acting was all top notch edge of the seat nail biting hype. I loved the concept and I'm a sucker for sci-fi space movies that uses actual real life science theories like interstellar.
Having said that, the first 2 acts were fine but man the final act was flat out absurd. The same issue I had with Interstellar, they turned it into a fantasy movie. I was so disappointed with that turn. I am okay if they use some fantasy elements but the moment they introduced a villain is when I lost it. Like...why? Just the movie with the crew trying to save humanity with space struggles would've totally done the tick to at least earn 4 stars.
The 'sacrificing one life for the sake of humanity' was so well executed, I loved how they handles it but I gave absolutely no shits to any of the characters, except maybe Chris Evan's characters. There was 0 to no emotional depth, some characters were so one dimension. Chris Evans and Cillian Murphy carries the cast despite of the stacked cast they had, they were all under utilized. Albeit the ending was a bit emotional but still I couldn't care at all about anyone in the movie.
Total waste of time. :(
Script is full of nonsense.
Really good movie with an awesome cast until the ending....that was a dreadful ending
I have a soft spot for space travel based science fiction. A large portion of Sunshine is a portrayal of humans challenged by the pressures of long distance space travel and separation from humanity. I think this is performed half-decently however you did feel left wanting more, primarily with character developments, background and relationships. The performances from Cillian Murphy, Rose Byrne and Hiroyuki Sanada where all impressive. On a side not I feel Hiroyuki's character was incredibly important for the film and was left slightly unexplored. The film is visually stunning and does not fail to show it. The music for the film works amazingly. Adagio in D Minor (Surface of the Sun) left me with chills working in tandem with the stunning backdrops to create jaw-dropping moments of tension and climax. I do have some larger issues with the movie which have been left to the spoilers section. I will say that if it where not for the last quarter of the movie I would have been blown away. The introduction of the 'super-human' antagonist really dumbs the movie down and stops it being an interesting study on humans but a Scooby Doo 'horror' chase scene.
Aweful Nonsense.
The start of the movie was promising and interesting and definitely had potential. Somewhere halfway it starts to get more and more absurd. OK. not all movies have to have a happy ending for every crewmember but after the 'joke' about an alien picking them off one by one........ seriously?. The final scene into the sun was really totally bullshit. No more, no less. But for me the movie was already ruined at the moment Pinbacker came into play. All the distorted views of him and unclear showing of scenes.... whats up with that. Jumping into ice cold water several times (its fluid, so its clearly above freezing temperature - nowhere the coolant is explained to be something else then water and hey, why should a computer be supercrazycooled anyway) and and and... This movie is really an insult at any form of intelligence. Too bad, it started out great.
I wont say don't bother to watch; but the score of 7 out of 10 is really way over done.
This starts as an amazing movie but then with the third act it gets a little bit off the rails.
Overall it's a good movie, with an excellent soundtrack. And the cinematography is great, so don't judge it by its (terrible) poster.
The movie has a plausible story but events after 2/3 of the movie were a huge turn-off for me. For spoilers look at other review.
In the first 2/3 I would rate the movie a solid 7-8/10 but after said events/story my rating falls off to a meager 6.
tldr; It's an entertaining movie with some unnecessary twists...
Good but not great. Danny Boyle's direction is spot on, but Alex Garland's script loses its way in the last third of the film. But definitely worth a watch.
Really amazing movie.
Wow, unexpectdly cool! Apart from the last scene (wtf is the giant cube? Where's gravity? Shouldn't the force be centrifugal when rotating?) it was good, visually pleasant considering the awful poster and the (I guess) not-so-great budget.
This sci-fi thriller started so strong. It began as a hard science fiction film with a spaceship basically pushing a nuclear bomb the size of Manhattan towards the Sun. The ship and crew's task is to reignite the dying Sun. The look and feel of the first half of the movie are wonderful. One of the best parts occurs early as the crew gets to witness the tiny planet Mercury passing between them and the Sun. The science of the movie; the 2001-"feel" of it, the repair of the ship and the golden space suits are really excellent.
Unfortunately in its last 30 minutes, Sunshine confuses, becoming more like Event Horizon. It also becomes quite confusing as Capa (Cillian Murphy) struggles or hallucinates, I'm not sure which, to complete the mission. It's difficult not to like "Sunshine" for its Sci-Fi wonders, but it falls off sharply in its final half.
A decent sci-fi movie. The story is interesting but becomes overly complicated and messy in the third act. Visually it looks great. I thought the cast was good too, especially Chris Evans.
Danny Boyle continues to push the boundaries of film making with his first Sci-Fi entry. Spooky, compelling, great film watching. :)
Absolutely mesmerizing. Kubrick meets classic Cameron in this immersive solemn, instant scifi classic. Boyle at his best since Trainspotting and 28 Days Later.
An abosultely stacked cast plus a very intriguing premise make for a recipe that feels like it should succeed. The first two acts of this film are genuinely amazing, but the third act could have been handled so much better. Like wtf is with the amount of hard cuts and blurs, just focus on a single thing for once. I understand why some people like it, but for me the overall message could have been conveyed without devolving into a super scary slasher film by the end.
The movie completely blew me away with everything it has: the plot, cast, soundtrack, visuals, and more. It's from 2007 and severely underrated.
I couldn't believe I hadn't even heard of it or seen a preview. It's still one of the most awe-inspiring and beautiful sci-fi films ever, with a heartwrenching soundtrack.
At the end of time, a moment will come when just one man remains. Then, the moment will pass. The man will be gone, and there will be nothing to show that we were here but stardust.
How haven't I seen this before or for the most part never even heard of it?
Such a cool and dark sci-fi movie with a phenomenal cast. I was gonna give it an 8 if it wasn't for that frustrating editing and sound effects surrounding that one character at the end, also the ending was kinda confusing.
chef's kiss on the cinematography.
Rated a Connor 5, normal 7
This one was just alright for me. Starts as an interesting save the world type film and becomes an Event Horizon type film in the end. Now I do love Event Horizon but it just didn’t fit in this one for me, plus the crazy cuts and blurred imagery were hard to follow for me. Wasn’t a bad movie by any means but just kind of sits in mediocrity for me.
Interesting plot! There are some plot holes and technical errors, but the movie is still enjoyable.
Sunshine is a movie about reigniting a dying sun, but unfortunately, it falls short of delivering a spectacular, emotionally charged experience. The film takes a realistic approach to its science, which while not a bad thing, causes the interactions between characters to lack charisma. Cillian Murphy excels in his role as Capa, the man responsible for operating the payload, but other performances, such as Mark Strong as Pinbacker, feel over the top and detract from the film. The pacing of the movie is slow, and it takes a while to get into the story. The final third of the movie becomes overly chaotic and takes away from the realism of the story. The visuals of the sun and the Icarus II look great, but they can't make up for a lacking story. Overall, Sunshine promised a lot but failed to deliver.
This movie started of great but was ruined by the confusingly bad final act.
An unsavory blend of high concept science fiction and a half-baked third act that seriously undermines the movie. Everything comes off underdeveloped even though the visuals and acting is great.
The third act really let this movie down.. Turned it from good Sci-Fi into something else entirely.
"Only dream I ever have... is it the surface of the sun? Every time I shut my eyes... it's always the same."
Danny Boyle always kills it no matter what genre he is directing . In this sci-fi piece he really lets the dialogue and science do the work, to the point where I think it really could happen and makes sense. And that scares me. Please be good to us, Sun God.
Among Us the Movie lol
Set roughly a generation from the present day, a small crew of astronauts are charged with the salvation of mankind when the sun begins to flicker out. Naturally, the most human response is to fly an absurdly large bomb into it, light that wick and come home to universal adoration. Of course, there's also the nagging problem of the first expedition (transparently dubbed the "Icarus I") which dipped off the radar on its own, identical, mission a few years prior.
It's a perfectly preposterous, semi-serious bit of science fiction silliness that veers into dark-screen slasher material in the final act. Very similar to Event Horizon, come to think of it, minus the demons. Most of the fun comes from establishing the concept, when we're free to play around with loose science and appreciate the nuances of the futurist industrial design. The later developments seem a little obvious and manufactured, and the crew is bafflingly awful at basic decision-making once they're past the reach of Earthbound communication, so there's also plenty to groan and roll eyes about.
Lots of familiar faces floundering around on this vessel, though - Chris Evans, Michelle Yeoh, Cillian Murphy, Rose Byrne - not that they bring more than bravado to the equation. It's kind of amazing that this is the way Danny Boyle preceded Slumdog Millionaire.
This movie was actually more amazing that I expected. The ending ate up any kind of real hope I had, though. Strong sci-fi vibes.
Everything is great in this movie. And I love Cillian Murphy. The end is really striking.
One of my favourites. It has some story problems towards the end when they sway away from introspective exploration of the crews mental state but overally I feel that it's unique visuals and impressive questions make it a great film.
Just above bland. A movie like this needs more suspense and maybe a claustrophobic feeling at the right times. No amount of sweat, space whispering, fire and repetitive music can create suspense. Didn't make much of the characters. I think the movie tried to be too visual at times to tell us how the characters felt and to create build up. I'd have liked more intimate characterisation and relationships. But when the visuals, music, fire and sweat work do occasionally work as a climax, it's good. I'm sure it's got a fan base that would appreciate it.
I was not ready for those flashing faces when they were searching Icarus. Thought I was going mad.
watched it a long time ago, was decent but holy shit that poster is the worst photoshop job i've seen
worst movie in cinema history .
Seems like it has a very stupid argument, how can the Sun be "restarted" with matter from the Earth?

Starts really good, but towards the end it's just getting absurd. Could have been a really cool movie!
