When it was released, it was bad. 20 years on, it's even worse
"You're fucking up my chi."
This movie was made by a music video director and it shows. Everything screams "Look at me! I am edgy and the new era of hackers is here!" That is not to say it doesn't have it's moments. Travolta feels like Face/Off Travolta, and Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry are good together.
Arriving at the tail end of Hollywood's naive fascination with the imaginary lifestyle of the underworld’s most glamorous hackers, this is an utterly ludicrous daydream without even the hint of a connection to reality. It's loaded with stars - Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry and John Travolta (of all people) take the leads, with supporting shots from Don Cheadle and Vinnie Jones - but abysmally acted and thoroughly stiff, narrow and postured.
The plot stabs in all directions without hitting anything substantial, more wrapped up in looking cool than going anywhere, and has its priorities so far out of whack that it actually expects the audience to deify the same character that's shown casually slaughtering dozens of innocents in the very first scene. As vapid, cheesy, overindulgent mind-numbers go, it's a real jewel.
Seriously, what were they thinking when they styled Travolta's hair in this movie??
This movie really carried a mid-90s feel to it, despite being released in 2001. I loved the half comical feel of the characters while still maintaining a serious story-line.
This feels very 90s. The cheesy hacking scenes, the music, the hair styles. But hey, we get to see Halle Berry's tits. So it has that going for it.
Decent action flick with some ridiculous "hacker" sequences!
It's a good thing this movie got released when it did. Any later, and it might not have been released at all. To carbon date this movie, you could IM the "real" Gabriel Shear on AOL Instant Messenger for personal responses and links to extra material on the web.
Go into it expecting 1990s action cheese and come out impressed by how good the cheese is.
Decent movie with a great story
Basic hollywood action movie. If I remember rightly, it was the first major hollywood movie after 9/11that was in or still in the cinemas. That's my lasting memory anyway.
This is a Travolta classic! When he looked great, prior to the awful eye lifts & face tuck. Now his face doesn't move at all!
Asides from that this is an on the edge of ur seat action film, within the first few minutes of this movie you will be right into it.
Hugh Jackman... 'nough said
Also: Halle Berry's boobies.

Has one of the best opening sequences you can find in a movie!
