It's got all the horror elements that do nothing for me and even bore me. I don't find this scary at all nor entertaining. This is pure personal taste. It's well made and I recommend it if you like a slow developing ghost story.
A very good and sometimes scary movie starring George C. Scott. Scott's character witnesses the tragic death of his family in an accident then moves away to get on with his life. Trouble soon follows when a house he moves into starts trying to tell him something.
Scott is great in this film. It is so much better to see an intelligent adult dealing with the strange and eerie than it is watching a bunch of teenagers being chased screaming through the woods.
A lot of people find this to be quite scary but I think its more loaded with atmosphere and suspense. The little wheelchair was certainly freaky though. When I watched this for the first time there were a couple of times when I did get goose bumps.
The music in this film is beautifully haunting and is one of my favorites soundtracks.
This is not a gory film at all and I'm not sure why it has a "R" rating. It may be due to its rather shocking reveal of a past heinous act that occurs with a child.
If you love haunted house stories this is another to add to the list of the best. It's right up there with the original "The Haunting" "The Shining" and "The Others".
Boring. Boring. Boring. Boring. Boring.
It feels like a horror movie where as soon as you figure out what's happening, all of the horror is taken out and it's just a supernatural whodunit, or in this case, howdunit.
I think I must have watched a different film to most of the reviewers. It was nonsense from start to finish. Terrible acting, ridiculous decisions that make the teens in slasher movies seem like Einstein, and it's so dated it looks much older than it is - especially when you consider that Alien and Star Wars came out a year earlier.
3 Thoughts After Watching ‘The Changeling’:
That, in my opinion, was NOT an easy story to follow. I get the basics, but the nitty gritty details were poorly executed. I hate when that happens. Make it make all the sense, please.
Maybe this film set a precedent/foundation for future “let’s solve the mystery of why I’m being haunted” films. Maybe not. But as a story on its own, it falls flat. Plot points felt random, without purpose, and wholly disconnected (especially that ending). There was no big revelation. Everything kinda felt a bit pointless as the credits rolled.
When the first sign of a ghostly presence popped up — a single piano key played on its own — it became abundantly clear that I was in for an unimaginative haunted house journey. The haunts were indeed basic and not even a little spooky. With such a quality setting, and score, there was certainly potential for so much more.
The first two acts were very slow but the last one was pretty awesome especially the staircase scene. My third George C. Scott movie. The more I watch of the two the more I think Michael Douglas could remake or stand-in for George.
It’s a well done horror film from 1980 with a decent story. Besides the lead, the acting is a little subpar. The music score does its job of adding to the suspense, even though the outcome doesn’t live up to the build all the time. It probably wouldn’t hold up to most peoples wanting to be scared expectations and I could see where some people might be bored by it. I gave it a 7, but if I could give another 1/2, I would. I wouldn’t put it in the great category, but it’s worth a watch and I don’t feel like I wasted my time on it.
Quietly chilling; this underrated supernatural mystery deserves more attention than it generally gets from horror buffs.
Watched this with Joe Bob, loved it!!!!
Masterfully done spookhouse thriller. It relies on atmosphere and tension and features one of the best performances from George C Scott. It's also a lot more twisty and complex than you'd expect from a movie like this

Incredibly powerful and disturbing in so many aspects, the seance was one of the best ever seen.
