The Drowning 2016

It lost a heart or two from me merely based on the pointless scene Tom had with the woman in his car. That behavior needs to stop being presented so casually as not a big deal on screen, cause people are stupid enough to apply it to their own lives. I can see why some rate this movie so low, but I thought that the pacing and the rest of the story were pretty decent as presented. It's just not some people's jam though and that's okay. I also have a soft spot for Julia Stiles.

A different twist on a familiar story.

This is a slow-burn film with a very long fuse - but it has quite a payoff! It does border on the formulaic, but the characters and the plot keep it simmering along. However, this story would be much more effective as a novella, NOT as a movie... and wouldn't you know it, the screenplay was adapted from a novel (which I haven't read.) Despite the well-worn paths the film takes, it held my interest - and the final scene is unforgettable!

Wow. A decent cast wasted on a trash story with so many unanswered questions and nonsensical actions by the film's characters. As for the ending....?!? In a word: avoid.

the cast does a good job with the story (mostly talking about julia and avan here) but the ending wasn't for me at all. had the movie ended after the book club signing scene it would've been perfect for me. now i haven't read the book at all so i'm trying to reserve judgment on the content itself but -- a parole officer who asks a psychiatrist to deal with dangerous situations with people she considers possibly unhinged??? i mean the man is undergoing a midlife crisis here and she's the one with a badge and training. and i'm hoping the reason he's so terrible at negotiation is because he works specifically with children like god forbid he is always this awful when someone is hostile

Watchable thriller, but never as clever or as deep as it thinks it is.
