The Thing from Another World 1951

I'm sorry, but I couldn't help but be bored throughout most of it. I know it's deemed a classic and had a hand in inspiring a lot in cinema, but the tension is almost non-existent and the creature ends up looking silly as hell. Perhaps I've just been spoiled from too many years of watching the superior remake, that I expect too much of it. It's quaintly old fashioned, and that makes it fun for midnight-movie viewing, when that mood strikes you, but it's hard to take seriously as a film.

A totally fantastic premise of an alien found near an arctic outpost. Its brought back to the camp where it thaws and does what all self-respecting aliens do…it kills! The early '50s effects are somewhat dated but they're good enough because they're accompanied by some real suspense and even some jump-back-in-your-seat frights. This movie has a lot of atmosphere perhaps due to the confined living quarters of the outpost. It's got a pretty satisfying finale too. My Dad told me this movie scared him like no other in his younger days. Well times have changed I guess. I don't find it scary but I think its got some great conflict and some tense moments.

Took me days to finish this one. It's overstuffed with too many characters, too talky, and too many overlapping voices. None of the actors are even capable of portraying fear or paranoia or any emotions. Cool monster and effects tho.

Like stories grandpa's stories of the Great Depression: interesting and not badly told, but we tell stories differently and better nowadays.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about this movie is it's the original The Thing...

Howard Hawks’ The Thing from Another World is a fairly typical ‘50s sci-fi adventure film. Based on a short story, a US Air Force team at an Artic research station is sent to investigate a possible UFO craft hidden beneath the ice and end up discovering an alien creature. The writing is very broad and relies mostly on character stereotypes. And, the directing does a rather poor job at bringing suspense and intensity to the UFO discovery and the ensuing standoff with the alien. Still, there’s enough action and excitement in The Thing from Another World to be mildly entertaining.

Why are they talking over each other all the time?

Great fast paced classic that grips you throughout. Shame it wasn’t longer so as to get more background in regards to the characters. The storyline in regards to the alien & how it relates to human function is very interesting.
