Studio Ghibli has a way of making you grow fond of a place or a house. The end was unexpected but it was heartwarming !
A gripping tale from beginning to end. I was wondering where they were going with it all, but everything fell into place at the end. And I was pretty glued to watching the movie.
What a beautiful film, I wasn't too sure at the start, like I didn't really know where it was going and was aiming for a 6 or 7/10. But by those last 20 minutes this film blew my mind, made the entire 110 minutes worth it and can't wait to watch it a second time because of that. - 8.5/10
Another amazing story filled with emotion. Also, the ending was quite shocking considering what was insinuated earlier in the movie.
man... I threw myself in tears... What a beautiful and emotional movie... it hat me so deep I couldn't even go back to what I was before... Sublime... I can't find a right adjective to express how amazing and touchable it was...
Beautiful piece by Studio Ghibli, as always
I kinda guessed how it’s gna play out halfway through the movie but it still made me a sobbing mess
The original title of the film is Omoide no Mânî.
Note: I saw the Japanese subtitled version
I was very keen to catch this at the cinema, as it may well represent the last time I'm able to see a new Ghibli release on the big screen. I went in knowing absolutely nothing about it other than that it's an adaptation of an English children's novel.
I also haven't seen 'Arrietty' so I wasn't sure how Hiromasa Yonebayashi's style would differ from the other Ghibli directors. What is consistent with past films is Makiko Futaki's beautiful animation - the village that Anna travels to is rendered quite stunningly and I know that the standard of animation is occasionally variable in some Studio Ghibli films, but it's of the highest standard here.
What surprised me a little was the nature of the story. There's whimsy here, certainly, but Anna is a character who's suffering from a great deal of alienation and to see that rendered so specifically at the beginning of the film set the tone for what followed. That's not to say that there aren't gentle moments of genuine warmth throughout the film, but the nuanced depiction of someone who is struggling to come to terms with themselves and their place in the world was a nice change.
Anna's character makes it slightly easier to accept her behaviour when she first encounters Marnie. Rather than question the strange nature of her new friend she is instead keen to drink in the sense of friendship and belonging she's experiencing. The reveal unfolds in a slow and fairly natural way - it never feels like the film is holding your hand, but nor does it feel as if the rug has been pulled from under you at the film's end. I liked the way small characters were allowed to hint at deeper things without them ever being explored; there's a lovely moment where some schoolboys mock Toichi the fisherman for his silence before being called back by their teacher. Toichi silently winds his fishing line and the incident isn't referenced again. When he does choose to speak, he adds a little shading to the story of the film but again, the film moves ahead without exploring this. It's refreshing sometimes to have a sense of more history untold.
There isn't the sense of enchantment that some of the other Ghibli films have, but I came away from this with a smile and if this does prove to be the final film from the studio, which seems unlikely, it's not a bad one to go out on by any measure.
I love you more than any other girl I’ve ever known
The plot is a little tricky at first but overall it is an hidden Ghibli gem!
Wow...this really hit me. Very stunning visuals in animation quality. 10/10 :100: Awesome story/narrative and the script had me hooked the whole time! :)
I was like "oh my god the girlfriends" and then there were no girlfriends anymore .... was so pretty, heartbreaking but hopeful in the same way
On the second watch is when I started bawling my eyes out of all the anime films I've seen so far, this one hits me the hardest in the feels, yup more so than "Spirited Away", no dis-respect to that film at all, but this one the drama and the supernatural mystery that weaves into it is just so damn good.
Especially after a certain silo scene where everything seems like it hits the "darkest hour" trope, only for a little light to be shined in, and then when the whole backstory was truly revealed, honestly I went along with it, true there is a bait and switch thing that everybody is gonna think about when they watch this film. But it's oh so tragic yet so understandable and the character drama is so rich and brilliantly written with such heartfelt emotion; gosh I just can't believe how good it is.
Beautiful and heartbreaking. I still had tears in my eyes even after the credits had gone.
This movie made me cry to where my throat was hurting.
I think that speaks for itself.
such a beautiful movie wow
This movie was perfect and amazingly beautiful in all sections, from the story to the visuals and the characters. At many times it was sad but in a good way. The ending was unexpected and the story distinguishes itself from anything else that I have seen in my life. It is my favorite movie of all time. It was the first anime feature film I had ever seen and it makes me want to start watching more anime.
you just have to wonder how do studio Ghibli know how to play your feelings right. even when you have nothing in common with the characters to relate to, they will still get you invested. such a heartwarming film.
What a beautiful soulful animated movie from studio Ghibli. An emotional gem!

Why does studio ghibli want to see me a sobbing mess? This movie was beautiful; sentimental, heart warming, terribly tragic and all together perfect.
