I'm having a tough time trying to understand why everyone was so hyped about the first season of this show. IIRC there was a lot of praise at the time this originally aired about the writing, and the overall quality of the first season.
I'm probably one of the most liberal people you'll find when it comes to drugs, but when you have a character like this pass up numerous offers for help, and instead turn to cooking meth, I have a hard time liking him. This is different from shows like Dexter or The Wire, where you can find yourself rooting for criminals. In those cases you sympathize with them because of a lack of choice. They're stuck in a bad situation. Here it's a choice. He's too proud, so he's gonna sell drugs.
I'm also not huge fans of the in-laws, as they really appear to be caricatures of the people they are supposed to be.
And every time marijuana is mentioned on this show so far I have had to restrain myself from throwing my remote at the TV. I'm hoping this is an intentional choice by the writers to illustrate the absurd attitudes people have towards weed, but I can't help but think many people watch these scenes and agree with them.
Anyways I'm gonna keep watching, as too many people I know with good taste love this show for me to simply bail after 5 episodes, but it isn't looking good. I'll try to avoid this page until I catch up, and return to tell you if my opinion changes.
