Apparently Flesh and Bone was written before sexual harassment workplace lawsuits became as commonplace as a cup of coffee. This line also sets up the pimp/hooker dynamic between boss-teacher and star pupil, and this dynamic drives the show. Everything the teacher says both to and about her is possessive.
The teacher was obviously pimped out himself at a young age, so he thinks Claire needs to "deal with it" and accept the advances, especially when it means advancing her career. Like he's doing her a huge favor and her skittishness is this problem they have to eliminate. We also saw further signs of his screwed up attitude in the scene where he treats the guy in his office like an object solely there for his gratification, saying all that shit about ownership whilst fucking him. And Claire is at a delicate place in her life, not able to stand up to someone like that yet.

So far this show has shown itself dense and heavy, presenting us an atmosphere of mixed emotions and strange and troubling scenes. So far so fair.
