"How I Met Your Mother" has one of the worst endings in tv no entertainment history. What a slap in the face to everybody who watched this show for 9 years and yet this show still has a 9 out of 10 for me. Why is that? Because I truly believe this is one of the best shows of all time so many good quotes and catchphrases and running gags and this show is so memorable and you love all the characters so much and you always feel weird when a show you love ends but when it ends like this you are just so angry and upset. I had heard that people were very angry about the ending of this show but I thought that was because they didn't like the mother and thought Ted and Robin should end up together turns out it was the total opposite. Ted and Robin were never electric togther they had they're moments but weren't even close to Barney and Robin. The last few seasons still have great episodes but the writing descions as a whole were terrible. I wasn't sure what they were pushing having Barney and Robin engaged but still hinting that Ted and Robin had feelings for each other it was like COME ON MAKE A DESCION and I thought they were just gonna have bad writing hinting those feelings and have them both end up with someone else but the writers said no lets have terrible writing. You spend literally an entire season with Robin and Barney's wedding AN ENTIRE SEASON then in the next episode were told they get divorced. Nobody gives a crap about Ted and Robin now you have barney pretty much depressed but hiding it, Tracy dead who I loved btw all for a couple nobody even shipped.
Nice touch on the "totally ninja" button, me likey! =)
Weak sauce could become "not steak sauce"... ETA? :P
How to ruin your 10 season long show in the final episode 101
Can watch 1000 times again.
I really did love this show until the last few seasons, I feel like the writers just used the mother as a plot device to keep everyone running in and interested, and there are many things to prove my point. Plus in the end him telling his kids how he met their mother was really all a big waste because it was just him asking his kids for permission to date their "aunt" Robin. This had one of the most horribly stupid endings of All TIME, plus I also feel they used the mother for things that would help get Robin with Ted, like once Robin found out she couldn't have children (which at first she dirnt want them and of course I'm not blaming her for not being able to have them) but once she found this out of course she didn't be with Ted who wanted children and marriage two things she didn't want, but oh then we have the mother she gives him children then dies offscreen after we see her like twice the whole show and Robin is all for marriage now because she was married to Barney who was supposedly the "wrong guy" which he wasn't they were OTP together. So now the wife is out of the way and he has children and he's more mature and so is she so now they can get together? Like so fucking stupid I mean even the whole season on Robin and Barney's wedding and then next epiosde after tat oh their divorce and it's just passed over like it meant nothing and Barney is suppose to make due because all of a sudden one of the chicks he was with previous had a child for him I mean come on the writing towards the end was horribly sloppy and its like they just had a perfect puzzle almost completely built and then decided to destroy it once it had one piece left. I LOVED this show tuned in for every epiosde snf then the end literally just ruined the whole show for me because they used the mother as a plot device, a baby maker and a way to help Ted grow better for Robin and that is so fucked up in so many ways
For a show that is more or less Friends 2.0 (started in 2005 after Friends ended in 2004 and about a group of twenty something year old friends that hangout in a city, go to a local coffee shop/bar, have the attractive and single female of the group Rachel/Robin, and the hopeless romantic that's super quirky Ross/Ted, and heavily focuses on the single shenanigans of the other guy in the group Joey/Barney), this show gets it right and lives up to the hype. Well at least for the first seven seasons. Season 8 starts to see repetitive/frustrating plot points, and Season 9 seems largely thrown together loosely about shenanigans and doesn't really focus on what the audience wants to see. Where Friends nails the ending, How I Met Your Mother flutters. Regardless, still one hell of a show and should be one that everyone checks out.
Average Season Review: 8.33/10
Recommendation - Must See (for Sitcom Fans)
The best series ever, legen...wait for it..dary
This show represents something of a milestone in my life. It was the first time I ever paid any attention to the quality of writing in TV or film. Unfortunately, when that switch turned on I realized I do not care for How I Met Your Mother. It’s frequently preachy and sentimental, but legitimately never earns that status from its audience. Why should I be taking these lessons from these people? They’re not doing well. Most of them are annoying humans.
Ted’s search for a wife is the epitome of the “just a nice guy” stereotype. He presents himself as sweet and caring, but in reality comes off as borderline sociopathic with how conniving and twisted it all becomes. It’s all consuming: his only purpose is to find love. But rather than actually be some hopeless romantic, he ends up doing some awful things. But moreover: he’s not even that good of a person. It’s just like the type you meet in real life. Ted wants you to believe he’s the good guy, but how often does he play into Barney’s awful schemes?
Speaking of, Barney as a character is frighteningly close to aging like fine wine, but that would only be true if there were a closer examination of his misogynistic behavior that resulted in a deeper exploration of his trauma of childhood. This does not exist in any meaningful way. Hinted at, sure, but then we are also meant to be fully on board with his conquest of lust until the show decides he’s changed like the flick of a switch. There isn’t too much of a shift, it’s more like a three step stoop if that stoop started in China and ended in Mexico. Character development, as you might have gathered, is a struggle frequently as though these characters were never meant to have any sense of self. Most of the cast’s personality changes per episode to suit whatever best fits the platitude the writers are shoving down your throat.
Which brings me to the biggest elephant in the room: Robin. How I Met Your Mother hinges on one character and it’s her. Yeah, it’s extremely weird. There is an intense amount of heavy lifting placed on Smulders to be the romantic interest for two characters (although it genuinely never feels like a love triangle which is even weirder). But the unfortunate part is, Robin is a very weak character. She’s all business forward. She can’t settle down for no man. Except she can and will frequently, as she’s barely single throughout the entire show. Her choices are never “I’m choosing myself instead of Ted” it’s “I’m choosing literally any other man”. And I don’t say this from the standpoint of Ted being a nice guy and deserving Robin (see above). I say this in terms of this show having the gall to act like they’ve created an independent woman. They haven’t.
The only characters on the show I like are the ones I’ve not mentioned: Marshall and Lilly. They likable and the performances by Segal and Hannigan are top-notch sitcom performances. They actually deal with relatable struggles and seem to wrestle in a realistic way. This makes everything mentioned above all the more frustrating because it becomes clear that the onus isn’t on the inability of the writers, it’s on a shaky grasp or understanding of what counts for good character development.
Clearly the attempt by the writers is to create Friends for the next generation. It’s about a group of twenty-somethings living in New York learning how to be adults while figuring out love and friendship as they mature. Hell, there are even multiple plot points ripped directly from the original show, barely even altered. Now, I’m a bit biased because Friends is genuinely one of my favorite shows of all time, but in How I Met Your Mother it’s almost laughable how inorganic and simplified everything they ripped from the former show actually is. There’s very little sense that these characters should be friends. They just feel like drinking buddies. Their version of support for each other is showing up when things are at their worst. Mostly, they’re just extremely cruel to each other. There are attempts (sometimes even good ones) to create bits among them, but they all pale in comparison to the more grounded approach taken by Friends. How I Met Your Mother is very gimmicky. It’s told through a plot device that becomes increasingly more contrived the longer the show drags. The majority of the jokes are very broad and don’t exist to expand our sense of character. Compare this to the 90s mega-hit: the show is usually extremely dialogue based. There’s more of a sense of banter and camaraderie. The humor comes from clever dialogue rather than the heavy concept-driven set ups of the latter series. In other words, one of them feels like a sitcom striving for more while the other feels like a hangout movie that just so happens to be a sitcom. I’m mot going to tell you that Friends does not result in similar sitcom tropes, but the emphasis on character and subtle development greatly bolsters the show as a whole.
I could compare the two further. It would likely require more time and effort but people have already done that ad nauseam. I won’t do that any longer here. I’ll suffice it to say that I found this show frequently frustrating in terms of how it wants me to empathize with characters that do not feel real or likable. Ah well, maybe it’s just not for me.
I wound up shame-eating the whole pizza...I woke up all greasy and sweaty..My sheets looked like what they wrap deli sandwiches in. Maybe I should join a gym..
I would always watch this show... but only because people said it was "sooooo good"! In all honesty, How I Met Your Mother is a tv show that I would always put on but get easily distracted because of it's mild comedy and boring, unexciting plots of episodes. HIMYM is simply a rip off of Friends, and really poorly made. If you do not want to believe it is a copy of Friends, here are some similarities for you:
- The tv show takes place in Manhattan, New York City, where a group of friends hang out at their regular everyday spot (McLaren's and Central Perk).
- Even though all of them seem to have jobs, they're all always seen hanging out at their regular spots or outside of work.
Not to mention that the characters are low-key copies from Friends:
- Ted is a geeky guy in his 20s who in the first episode falls for a girl named Robin who is wayy out of his league (Ted and Robin/Ross and Rachel).
- Both tv shows seem to have womanizers. A guy that goes out of his way to try and spend as much time possible getting girls. Additionally, a guy who is probably one of the most comical characters on the show (Barney and Joey).
- Lastly, the extremely put together couple - the ones who are already headed for marriage and starting to go out into a whole new stage of the world (Lily and Marshall/Monica and Chandler).
What I hate the most about this and kills it for me is the idea that the whole plot revolves around one of the most boring and annoying characters; Ted. He has a good fucking life! A great life! Who wouldn't want a life where they have the most caring and supportive friends and a decent job in a great city at such a young age? He is only in his twenties and in the first season, the plot revolves so much about his desperate want for finding the "perfect one". Who the fuck wants to find the love of their life at such a young age? Most people at this stage want to explore the world and continue to live it up, trying new things before life gets boring and actually consider responsibilities. However, even though Ted has all of this, he throws it away by simply constantly complaining and whining to his friends on how sucky his life is because he hasn't found the love of his life yet.
I never got to the end of the show - nearly did. However, I read spoilers and I'm gonna let you know that another reason why this show lacks success on having a good plot is because HIMYM takes their fans through 9 seasons only to find out that the one Ted ends up meeting and is supposedly the "mother", is killed off the show and dies of an illness that isn't even mention on the show. Ted then ends up going back to Robin, AGAIN.
So, there you have it! The tv show severely lacks success and is simply a poorly written rip off of Friends.
I hated the ending. They should've gone with the alternate ending from the DVD box where it just shows how they met, and not what happened after. It should've ended on that train station.
loved it. the ending could've been better though.
Watched last 3 seasons live, rest in syndication.
It's my favorite show, decided to re-watch first 5-6 seasons again >3
The premiss of this show is what originally hooked me, looking back the quality may have never been there, although there was the occasional episode of good quality. The show's emotional heft at times were it's saving grace.
As my interest in the premiss petered out, I felt an obligation to finish the series off.
I thought the 'Mother' character was a great addition towards the end of the series, she accompanied Ted perfectly and I found her inclusion satisfying.
How I Met Your Mother teaches us that if you want your best friend's wife badly enough and keep trying to get her, you will eventually end up with her.
Wow, I must really be missing something here, managed three episodes of the first season and decided it was poor. Struggled to connect with ANY of the characters and the canned laughter was beyond distraction.
This show should've ended 3 or 4 seasons ago.
Terrible, horrible, no good, very bad finale.
I accept with people telling this show is repetetive. Ok, it's not unwatchable. It's fun and entertaining as always. But not so legen-waitforit-dary like "Friends".
Not really sure why I still watch this. It's a collection of tired catchphrases arranged around an ever-circling drain of repeated events in a world that hardly moves forward or evolves.
What started as a great comedy series, ended as a struggle to finish an episode. Recommended but stop watching when it starts getting uncomfortable..
OH god, I'll miss this so much :'(
3 rd time watching right now.
Seasons 8 & 9 were sappy, romance bullshit. Did they forget this was supposed to be a comedy? Why the fuck did I keep watching such garbage?
The ending wasn't bad, it was just unexpected. I love this show from the first to the last season. I could watch all the seasons over a hundred times and I wouldn't get bored. I really do love it and recommend it to all. Stinson out.
file this under Great show Utter crap ending
How can you not love Barney?
Worst. Finale. Ever.
I'll walk myself out.
I just finished watching the show, and I feel kind of empty, I was lucky enough to not get spoiled by the ending, but my spontaneous thoughts about it, is that I'm quite happy with how it all ended. On the other hand, I was really did like the ending of LOST for example.
Why do all good things come to an end
It's absolutely awesome.
Can't complain, what a great show!
A great comedy show on par with the best of its kind (aka Friends). It is fun and clever with interesting characters.
Maybe it lost its edge during the last season where it became almost surreal but the journey till then was nice and filled with clever and relatable jokes and catchphrases without getting tiresome.
I would recommended to anyone who liked "Friends"!
When I get sad I stop being sad and be awesome instead
Enjoyed the series a lot and would recommend it to anyone open to watch a comedy series
Accidentally everyone is gay and dating each other
Really edgy tho. Barney is a pedx for no reason
That finale though:face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth:
I still don't know where the Pineapple came from...
I've got very mixed feelings about this and it's all to do with the last couple of episodes. I'm currently rating this a seven out of ten but may knock it down to a six based on that ending. The ending was just so infuriating. This in the end didn't turn out to be about the mother at all - it's about how Ted was so in love with Robin. Honestly this show treated Ted and Robin like they were some sort of Ross and Rachel shit when they shouldn't have been. They dated earlier in the show that was fine move on.
What infuriates me about this as well is that we find out in about season 7 that Robin can't have children so we have the mother on screen just long enough to provide two children for Ted before dying just so he can go running back to Robin.
I must admit this show does have its stellar moments and has really lovable characters but I do think the ending fell victim to bad writing and that's saddening.
Average season rating: 6.888…
When it's good, it's truly great. But the questionable decisions add up over the years, which drags down the overall experience.
Cant say the best sitcom ever but if you are bored or hopeless it is worth binge watching. Will re binge watch it definetely.
I liked this show originally but it stayed around way too long but the worst thing was the series finale was so lame and awful that it ruined the enitre series for me. Plus Ted is an adult why would his voice change to a different person? that's dumb.
I started looking at HIMYM a long time ago when he was up to date. I was much younger then and I looked at the series quite differently than I do now, when I finally decided to finish in 2020. That's when I stopped somewhere in the eighth series, because it occurred to me how it was slowly becoming a sitcom where you don't laugh at all. And I must say that even those laughs from the heart were very few even now.
I admire the authors for having balls to come up with such an ending. Because, even if one thinks how everything can turn out well, in life not everything turns out well. I cried? Yes, I cried, because when you look at something like that, you end up staying in the end, even if there weren't many of those laughs.
HIMYM has his moments that are memorable. He has, but also his moments, which could be skipped. But in the end, not only thanks to the bold end, but the whole concept of finding the right person, it will forever remain as one of the series that are ... legendary.
I started HIMYM with a lot of prejudice. But I'm just too late to watch HIMYM. I constantly moving forward to start day by day. First few episodes are a little boring but than it's start. You see things that you can make for your real life. Actual sections from your life. Characters are quiet in place. Very well chosen actors and actress. Good acting. A script touching your heart. Nice jokes. OK sometimes it's dirty but. Simply everything is great for sit-com TV-Series. It did not last very long so people not bored. I put HIMYM to my watchlist : 100 TV-Series you should watched before dying. A beautiful written script with a simple shot. Enjoy!
I love the show but the amount of countless "Friends" references is just unacceptable
I love it I love it
I adore each and every episode, hard to mark in words how big of an impact HIMYM have been on me.
Since years have passed, I’m re-watching this show for 4th time(?), and it have not lost it’s beauty even once. There are still moments that cracks me up for good laugh. Meaning that characters stick up perfectly with each and every-one making perfect chemestry between them and us – viewers.
You follow and live their lives, get to the edge of the seat to bindge one more episode before doing your own thing.
Ah man, I just can’t explain on how well done it is. The balance between seriouse and being funny is just great in every aspect.
I’m just sad about one thing, that I won’t be able to see it ever again for the first time.
HIMYM is legen -wait for it- dary
Very funny if you haven't watched this yet do so. Barney is hilarious and sorry for being shallow but Robin is hot. Great story keeps you laughing and waiting for the next hint who is the mother.
This series has been a friend to me. He has accompanied me for many years, I have laughed, cried and smiled with her. I feel an unconditional love with all his characters (especially with Marshall) and with the story. It is true that it ended in a slightly elaborate way but for me it will continue being the best series that has been made in the history of television.
This is truly the best show I ever seen
This TV Show is amazing. The better.
this is the series of my life. I LOVE MARSHALL AND LILY SO MUCH
I think it was a great serie to watch. The serie is not to heavy, not too much drama and always nice to just watch an episode. I was pretty bummed when the serie ended, but it was nice to move on after such a long time of following it. I would recomment watching it!
Totally love this showwwwwww!!! Legen wait-for-it dary!
Although the worst 2 chapters in life, totally screwed everything
It was good right up until the last season, once you get to that just stop. Pretend that is how it ended. you will be much happier
My favorite sitcom! Well this and 18 to Life. Both very quirky.
One of the best sitcoms I've ever seen. Ok, the last seasons are a bit weak, but it's always sad to say goodbye to this group of friends after 9 years.
PS: there are TWO endings (for those who didn't know), and the second one is as it should be (IMHO).
there are people who say they were happy with himym's finale and there are people who tell the truth
I really loved How I met your mother! Last parts to be honest were so nice and heart touching! And at the last part only I realised it was all about "Robin".......
I really recommend this show to everyone. Even tough a lot of fans didn't like the end, for me it was awesome.
I hate the ending... The ending made me hate this show...
The ending was so bad that made me never want to watch any of the episodes again. One of the greatest disappointments of TV.
perfect on the first 8 seasons and 22 episodes
30 years later, when they are about 10 years older than "future-themselves" for real and it would be 2040 in HIMYM universe, they should totally make a sequel, a movie the least. "Future-kids" were about 15 in 2030, that would make them 25 in 2040, with makeup and computer graphics, and if themselves are in good shape, it shouldn't be a problem for the same kids actors to look younger as they should. The same goes for others.
The ending was a disappointment for me.
GIVEM E MY BARNEY AND ROBIN HAPPY NEDING I DESERVE IT I HAVE BENEBE NOWHTIGN BUT GOOD TO YOU HOW COUDL YOU DO THS TO ME MOTHER CUFCKER
It's legen... wait for it... dary!
great comedy!
Watching up to season 8 has been a lot of fun, I have loved it all the way, time to get season 9 on DVD and watch it all in one go!!!
Best show ever. It can never be replaced. I could watch it over and over again..
This show was great but I realised that the last season....didn't bring one laugh out of me. I kept watching just because it was the final season and in the hope it gets better like previous seasons.
Good for a laugh. It felt like it was more drama than comedy by the end though.
Awesome and fun!!
I deleted the entire show after watching the finale. Terrible. The fact that they forcefully had to add soms drama to the ending by making the mother sick was so stupid. And then he's going after Robin again, like we haven't seen him doing that for FOUR seasons! So, annoying...
I don't even know where to begin. This whole show, NINE FULL SEASONS, were made irrelevant by the last, what, 5 minutes? It's an insult to us as viewers, and to the sanctity of this relationship that we awaited and rooted for and wanted to remain untainted. How I Met Your Mother ends for me under the yellow umbrella and I don't want to think about anything after that, because that would make the whole journey pointless.
Best tv show ever, have no words to describe what represents to me!
the ending is so horrible I can't even do a rerun for this show
i love the series, it's one of my favorit comedy series, but why the writers gave us this horrible ending, that's really one of the worst series finale ever, I'm am very disapointed
The show was amazing, but the finale was predictable and lacked any humor whatsoever. Puts a bit of a damper on what was otherwise one of my favorite sit coms.
The worst finale ever!!!!!! Just terrible... I feel like I just wasted time when I was watching it!!!
In seasons 7 to 9 there were some good episodes, but most of the time it was like "gosh, find the mother already!". IMO the show was artificially prolonged and should ended much earlier to be truly Legendary. It's like a sportsman, who could end his career at the top, but ultimately he decide to win yet another Olympics. Year later, he's not in top 10 and even he tries really hard, he eventually didn't qualify for the next Olypics. He may win here and there, but that's it. If he ended at the top, he would be a god forever. Now he's like nobody cares. And that's HIMYM (and sort of story of quite a few sportsmen).
Awesome and Legen wait for it dary
Not totally ninja, it's Legendary!
God.. I realized that I watch this show just because I watched earlier seasons.. It's the same jokes again and again... please put this show out of it's misery
It used to be awesome.
The best!!!Barney is awesomee
this is one hellb of a show
One of my favourite series.
