What a mess... In the best possible way! I loved the gang's take on wrestling, since I've watched quite a few matches of it back in the day when WWE was still WWF. Yes, it's all fake (sorry, Frank!), but it's also good fun. Just like this episode was!
[9.2/10] Another great one. As someone who grew up watching wrestling, I love this episode’s satire of the often-jingoistic side of sports entertainment, and The Gang’s usual misguided attempts to channel and recreate these things.
Where to begin? For one thing, I love Roddy Piper here, playing the perfect hardass, down-on-his-luck grappler a la The Wrestler. His terse and wistful responses to everything, and the guys’ half-bemused half-concerned responses were all great.
The B-story isn’t bad either. I love how the episode revels in Dee’s terribleness at initially being attracted to a returning soldiers she’s chatting with online, only to cravenly beg off when she thinks he’s disabled, and then just as cravenly attempt to worm her way back into his heart (after setting up Artemis as a patsy) once she realizes he is able-bodied. This seems hard to say, but it may be peak terribleness for Dee.
But the best part of the episode comes in how everything comes together in the end. I love the chintziness of the guys’ “Birds of War” costumes and concept, and Dennis’s fixation on explaining that they are both birds and men, not just one or the other. Cricket as a shameless foreigner character who actually gets the better of his tormentors this time is a wonderful exercise in subversive satire. And Frank unleashing his “trash man” character a la George “The Animal” Steele is an inspired way to cap everything off.
Overall, this is just a hunk of outstanding IASIP lunacy, with a wrestling-bent that dovetails nicely with the show’s already outsized attitude. Fantastic stuff.
