[6.1/10] Pretty underwhelming start to the finale. It’s a decent enough premise that Dee has made it in with the cool kids, but only by bashing people and gets a little too into it. Dennis finding he’s not as cool as he remembered, but actually kind of a pariah isn’t a bad idea. And Charlie and Mac reliving their days as bullied nerds has some merit. It just doesn’t really come together, and the laughs aren’t really there either.
The one highlight was the side characters. Seeing Cricket pretend to have his act together but then (apparently) be a thief and go crazy with ringworm was the kind of loony stuff I come to this show for. And The Waitress being totally forgotten and sloppy managed to garner a few dark laughs.
Still, this didn’t really work for me. Given that it’s a two-parter, maybe this will be one of those IASIP episode that nails the landing and ties everything together, thereby making the whole thing look better by comparison. But in this episode at least, it’s a bunch of standard high school reunion tropes with a slight-but-not-enough IASIP twist that just left me cold.
