[7.6/10] I’m sure this episode would mean more to somebody more versed in DC’s old western comics, but it was still pretty darn fun for a neophyte like me! I am a complete sucker for these sorts of time travel stories, and depositing Batman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern into the Old West is a recipe for some time-hopping entertainment.
It’s enjoyable to see the show playing around with some of the familiar western tropes like poker games and gun fights in the public square. Mixing things up with a local baddie who suddenly has access to a time machine and, with it, scores of future tech, makes things loonier but still enjoyable. This is an episode where there’s literally bandits riding raptors and pterodactyls, more Zeta-like robots decked out in western ware, and other goons in giant mechas fighting our heroes. It’s some bonkers stuff, but that just adds to the fun.
There’s also something cool about the modern day superheroes teaming up with their Old West equivalents. Jonah Hex is the only one we’ve run into before in the DCAU (I think), given his skirmish with Ra’s al Ghul’s son in an episode of B:TAS. But there’s still something neat about seeing modern day Leaguers go all gunfighter and putting in with some 1800s equivalents.
I also like the setup for this little duology’s big bad, David Clinton. A duplicitous physics professor, denied tenure and called a loser by his wife, who’s hopping around through time trying to prove his worth makes for a unique antagonist. Him being bested by a local tough only to (briefly at least) turn around and best Batman is a nice bit.
Plus holy hell, that cliffhanger! The return of Terry McGinnis! Another look at Old Static! The Jokerz Gang from Return of the Joker! And Warhawk confirmed as John and Shayera’s son! So much to look forward to there!
Overall, a cool and out there concept to close out the season with. The Western stuff is fun, but I’m looking forward to jaunting around through the future even more.
