A solid introduction to the series, I'm really looking forward to more. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Kurata, someone whose becomes obsessed with the Koto after hearing an amateur but heartfelt performance at a school assembly, finding a light in his despair after failing to get into this Mieryo school despite having good grades (which just reinforced to Kurata that he always messes up at the most important times). I'm looking forward to seeing more of Kurata, and I really admire how he's become so passionate about the art of Koto, even talking back to his bullies when they almost broke his Koto. Also, man im looking forward to Chika's character being explored, a formerish deliquent who has been abandoned and mistreated by everyone in his life, until his grandfather (a koto-craftsman who actually cared for him rather than casting him aside) took him in. Their relationship was heartwarming, and it was beautfiul seeing them bond together as they started playing the Koto and Chika opened up to him. And now, Chika wants to preserve part of his dad's memory through continuing the Koto in highschool, even blaming himself for the accident (gramps koto store trashed) because Koto used to be involved with those delinquents. Also, Chika's friend is a great dude, and Im enjoying the banter between Chika and Kurata as they becoming friends. Although the exposition felt excessive for the first episode, like they were rushing through character motives and backstorys rather than giving it some breathing room.
Solid first episode, explains the characters and their motives well, if a little ham-fisted with how much exposition is rammed in in such a short amount of time.
