[7.2/10] Perfectly enjoyable bit of oddball sitcommery. The conceit of the show -- which features Chris O’dowd as the imaginary friend of the title character -- adds a nice layer of weirdness and whimsy to the whole thing.

There’s a fun take on the bizarreness of schoolyard logic to this first episode. Martin trying to find protection from bullies and finding it via promising romance with his sister to an even tougher brute is an early Simpsons-esque vibe. In fact, that’s the general tone of this whole thing. Few laugh out loud jokes, but a fun, slanted look at a not-so-perfect nuclear family and there’s off-kilter trials and tribulations.

The same goes for the B-story. The notion of Martin’s dad going to confront the bullies’ father, and ending up in an unofficial club for dads trying to escape their kids is a little broad and hoary as that sort of gag goes, but well done.

Overall, I wasn’t necessarily racing to watch the second episode, but there were plenty of chuckles in this one, and it’s a neat idea.
