Sanditon: Season 1

1x01 Episode 1

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a Jane Austen Story wouldn't be a Jane Austen story without a pompous bloke preemptively judging, and being unnecessarily harsh and curt towards a spirited, smart young woman, only to then fall in love with her (I'm not actually familiar with this particular story, but I'm guessing that's where we'll end up).

This was a great first episode for a new series. The storytelling and pace helps you quickly become acquainted with characters and conflicts and builds up a new world around this small seaside village. I did not feel any lull or area where I felt time was wasted or did not gain some backstory/background for the future story. Only area that did lack was concerning Ms. Lamb since we only got a quick peek and some whispering of why she left London but did not meet someone who will clearly have a big role to play. However, for storytelling, it makes sense to keep her mysterious but when so much time was spent speculating about her and to not get any real pay-off was distracting. Setting is great. The homes are lush, the ballroom was beautiful, the landscape is very British with bleak seaside but loved the cliff or beach walks (or the bathing).

Overall, first episode felt very mature and filled-out - it felt complete (except towards the end concerning the ballroom scene I mentioned above, but that was personal preference).
