Crimson Shield - good plot LOL. Interesting back story to Picard; love the recovery time to major surgery too, a mere 4hrs!!

Coming after one of the best episodes yet, this one is plain old stupid. Kind of a shame.

  • How exactly have the Pakelds acquired all of this technology they are incapable of using? I understand how they lured the Federation in to help. But I don't think Romulans are the type to stop and offer roadside assistance.
  • Why would Riker completely ignore all advice? Troi runs up to the bridge to say "they have bad intentions, beam him back!" and they literally ignore this. For no good reason.
  • We're told multiple times that Picard's surgery is routine and nothing special. So, of course, it goes wrong somehow. How? We don't know, nor do we care, apparently. And this Starbase apparently had no one qualified to do anything once the slightest problem arose. Seriously? It's a routine surgery, but none of them know what to do once something doesn't go exactly to plan? They're all incompetent?

An episode with two plot lines that are both not strong enough to support an episode on their own. Two mediocre plots combined won't make this a good episode. I suspect that auch episodes are unavoidable when you are tasked with producing 25 episodes per year.

  • The abduction story is similar to other storie we had in this franchise before. It's a standard story about deception, exploring space, encountering other races and the dangers thereof. It's also one of these episodes designed to show Riker in command. Eventually, he will prove himself capable but along the way he fails to act cautiously. At this point it's almost like a running gag: Troi and Worf are habitually ignored. Riker leans a lesson here. Listen to them.
  • The little story with Picard and the kid isn't as bad as I remember it. It adds some relatable background to Stewart's character: hates kids, sacrificed his private life in service for Starfleet, likes philosophy, used to be cocky and was once easily challenged to a fight, isn't invincible, cares for Wesley but can't show it. Wesley still isn't likeable.

This was pretty bad but again the story Picard tells Wesley will become important later

I always considered this to be more of a filler episode who's real value lies in the background info about Picard. The Pakleds are funny in a way but didn't provide much of a challenge ultimately. Even on watching it for the first time it seemed unlikely that something might happen to either Picard or LaForge. Of course that is quite often the case if you put principal characters in dangerous situations so it depends on the writing. Which isn't the best. But since not every episode can be a "10" it's fine.
Personally I struggle with this episode because it again showed me why I didn't like Dr. Pulaski. But that made Picards reaction towards her so much better.
An afterthought: At the beginning when the Enterprise recieved the distress call they were concerned about putting distance between them and the Captain. Why ? They didn't know about the procedure and Riker should have been more than capable to deal with the matter at hand.
Would have liked to see Sonya Gomez as a more recurring character as she seemed to fit in very well
