[5.5/10] Maybe I just wasn’t in the mood for this one, but man, this felt like a waste of time, with the most dumbed down conflict. The natives are getting restless on the Colossus because they’re running out of food, so the whole thing turns into one big hunt for the giant manta ray that our heroes were dealing with in the last episode.
That’s not the worst premise in the world, but the problem is that the argument and themes are so very very basic. Aunt Zi wants to leave, but might stay if they can get the manta ray for food. The pirates see an opportunitiy, and try to undermine Captain Doza’s authority in the most obvious, exaggerated way. Kaz and Tora jump in to try to help with the hunt and preserve the Captain’s good name, but it all turns into a dumb caper on the surface where Tora’s alien dog gets lost while they’re trying to capture the thing.
There’s no real twist or even much momentum to the whole thing. The episode could be half as long and you wouldn’t lose anything of importance. They vaguely chalk it up to Captain Doza feeling responsible for everyone on the Colossus, and so he can’t let them leave, because he’s worried the First Order will get them? It’s a pretty thin reason for not wanting to let people depart, but I guess it gives him an excuse to give a generic speech at the end of the episode. Meh.
The one thing I liked here is Neeku’s trick to make the ship look like it has a sky. It was an obvious feint when Kaz thought that Neeku would actually move off the ship, but it’s still sweet to see him go to such lengths to try to make the Colossus feel more like home and “less like a prison” and to hear him call the station’s residents his family. Neeku’s 100% the best character.
Overall, this is a forgettable, waste of time outing, but hey, at least it’s a good a good Neeku C-plot!
