I'm done with this.. Can't take it anymore. If you are American, into the military and over patriotic.. you are going to love this.
If you are not.. then you will keep rolling your eyes on all the PRO MURICA! it's all over the episodes, the "plot" (or lack off) and the fact that full, loaded with cliches!!!!!!!!
This is show is loud, stupid, obsessed with the military (thanks Michael Bay), buys into that American Exceptionalism nonsense, and explodes a lot (Bay).
It's also fucking great.
I can't explain why.
The typical America against the world cliche... Has Michael Bays stench all over the place.
7.7 at IMDB? How and why?
It's unfortunate that this show was so uneven through it's run. The first, third and fourth seasons were fairly entertaining. The second was merely okay. What was sad was that the fifth/last season was so weak.
One of the worst shows I've seen in so many years and I can't get why Eric Dane accepted a part in this...
Seasons 1 thru 4 are well worth watching; Season 5 is frankly poor and an exercise in how not to spend money.
They really could have ended this after the first season. It started off decent, but as time went on it got boring and predictable.
This show was EPIC and amazing! It had me on the edge of my seat at all times and the over the top dramatics and action scenes were delightful. Nowhere will you encounter better military porn. It was definitely a slight guilty pleasure show that had me feeling like I should be screaming "USA! USA! USA" all the time for NO reason, but I loved every minute of it. Plus, I'm a sucker for a the Found Family dynamic and the crew of the USS Nathan James fit that perfectly.
When I started watching The Last Ship, the second season had aired about four episodes. Of course, I watched from the beginning. In just four days, I was caught up and eagerly awaiting the next episode each week. The show started out that good, avoiding the cliché of a weak first season. It came out fighting, just like its heroes. That fighting spirit continued all the way through season two, too.
My enthusiasm stayed strong through the break. Trying to find another show like this proved futile, however. I had no choice but to wait for season three to begin, and once it did I watched each third-season episode as soon as possible.
The Last Ship has five seasons, however, and they are not all equally great.
The visual effects in this show were never amazing, I'd say. They mostly stayed out of the way—not award-worthy, but not glaringly fake, serving the purpose and carrying the plot forward with the appropriate battle excitement. Season three, though, brought a subtle dip in quality that morphed into some pretty terrible CGI by seasons four and (especially) five. The effects no longer blended in, but called attention to themselves by not quite fitting into the show's visual world.
I was even less amused by the slideshow-like slow-motion effect used in a few fifth-season episodes, wherein normal-speed footage was simply played back at just a frame or two per second. The director(s) might have chosen that style, but I would disagree with that creative choice. However, if the relative lack of shipboard action in the later seasons was any indication, the show's budget was cut pretty dramatically by that point. (Having the U.S. Navy run a destroyer for the film crew certainly wasn't free of cost.) I wouldn't be surprised if the production simply didn't want to invest in a high frame-rate camera for proper slow-mo.
If all I had were technical/production gripes, though, I wouldn't be as disappointed as I am in the latter part of The Last Ship. Far more than the obvious cuts in spending on shipboard locations and visual effects, the real let-down was in the quality of the scripts.
Understanding that The Last Ship was originally based on a novel doesn't really help explain why the show's writing quality declined. The series never really followed the book's plot, merely using its setting as a loose template to create a new narrative. But, where the first two or three seasons felt tightly written and thought-out, the last two seasons in particular felt thrown together and haphazardly constructed. The fact that seasons 4 & 5 were filmed around the same time gives a clue as to how rushed the writing process must have been, and I'd say it really is evident from the final product.
In the end, I just wish I could find even one other show like The Last Ship's first 2-3 seasons. Underneath the Michael Bay explosions and chest-pounding American patriotism, the real draw of this series was in the naval strategy and tactics. It was a lot like watching the Defiant fighting in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Dominion War arc, except the technobabble referred to real systems used on American ships right now instead of sci-fi technology—and of course, the ship was navigating in the ocean instead of space.
Wow, so much disgust for Americans hinted there....... I don't remember doing anything to anyone. Oh well, I don't hate..... :-)
USA USA. No thanks. Removing from sickbeard. Only wish I could delete the memory of this show from my head.
Over cheesy lines
Bad accents
Terrible stock footage
Cliche
Usa rammed down my throat
Religion rammed down my throat
The plot is not good; it's cheap and uses very offensive stereotypes, but is some of the best military porn I have ever seen.
Man this must be one of the most well made series I have watched since 24 and Band of Brothers.
How on earth did they afford doing all the shoots on a Warship out to sea?? And all the helicopter scenes. Must cost a fortune. Im guessing each single ep of last ship has the same budget as all 22 eps together of Agents of SHIELD, Haha!!
Well as someone mentioned before its very American, but its so well made, filming technique, action scenes, special effects, so its more than worth watching.
I really hate series that do all the shooting in a studio green room, and then add computer grapics CGI. The real deal is always so much better!
Cloyingly patriotic and occasionally predictable, but a solid premise with good writing and engaging action. Occasional forays into "thriller" territory with non-physical conflicts.
Overall worth watching.
An Action packed military show with US Navy saving the apocalypse!
Its not for everyone! But I enjoy the crazy action in the water and intense battles!
And I'm a big fan of Captain Chandler & Slatter, the big guys on the ship!
I'm hooked on it for sure, and if you haven't seen it its worth checking out!
Not the best tv show made but its kind of entertaining for some reason. It's one of those shows that you can watch while doing other things. It doesn't matter if you miss an episode or two but you still want to find out what happens.
I've never seen a show using more clichés. The beautiful, smart, compassionate, brave and bad-ass Americans save the world from ugly, power-hungry, bad foreign people.
To call the characters two-dimensional is an insult to the y-axis.
It's a super accessible show, since even unborn babies understand the dialogue and the story. Maybe it's written by children or a computer algorithm.
Come on! What is this? First season was amazing, very exciting, but all the others are bad! It became pro USA show. I give up.
Boring cast with cheap acting, dropped it right after 4 episodes
I know im weird, but I yell out USA USA almost every episode
I've seen all three seasons and i love this show. someone mentioned offensive stereotypes but when you trying to make a show realistic thats what you do, and if they dont then you think the show is not realistic. well you cant please everyone. and we all have opinions, but for me its good. =)
Great episode. Boom after Boom after Boom.
Really great series!!! It was not too good in the beginning, but from the middle till the end it does really keeps interest.
A fun and entertaining show as long you don't take or analyze it way too seriously. Looking forward to Season 2.
This could have been a very good show. Sadly its a bit ruined by beeing so "american". Bad dialog and "superheroes" from murica.
probably still going to watch it tho..
First two seasons were good, but last 3 seasons… too many wars. I wanted more virus and post apocalyptic story…
Predictable, bland, and full of military cliches, jargon, and propaganda. Was recommended to watch this, and actually laughed out loud when I found out that the main producer was Michael Bay. Everything here lacks quality and feels so cheap. The story is horribly cliche and vague with all of its plot devices. There are numerous instances where a foreign country/ethnicity is the villain while Americans "save the day". The cinematography feels like a soap opera with all of its overly smooth scenes and lack of real shot editing quality. The only semi-decent portion is the action, but Michael Bay's style is always too frantic and rushed to actually appreciate some of the practical effects taking place. Just a bland, forgettable military show.
(=) Occasionally impressive action, though covered up by horrible editing
(=) Decent acting, but countered by extremely weak writing
(-) Full of stereotypes and American military propaganda
(-) No real tension, stakes, or consequences for a large cast of characters that you end up caring little about
Final Verdict: 4.29/10 (Below Average)
The first series was pretty good, although now we have actually had a real pandemic the USA didn't do very well in either developing a vaccine nor getting to grips with the death rate. Pure fiction.
The rest of the series get progressively worse and I dumped series 5 completely. A bit like "Prison Break", great acting, great first series and then bad script and story lines that totally ruin the rest.
The good
Action - 10/10
Story 10/10 season 1 and 2, the rest 3/10
The bad
American Chauvinism, forced patriotic narrative. It's painful to watch
i thoroughly enjoy the action side of this show but man it's so painful to watch the American Chauvinism it preaches. It gets worse during the 5th season. If you like military stuff with a shit ton of "one man fix all" story, then you might wanna watch.
I love a good post-apocalyptic show and season one of The Last Ship was just that. Season two was a decent follow-up but got a bit formulaic and past that it just was total garbage.
UPDATE DECEMBER 2022:
I still had this sitting on my Plex so I decided to give it another go and have changed my opinion of it. The first FOUR seasons are actually decent, albeit I did fast-forward through some of the less palatable parts (boring, unbelievable, etc). Season 5 was not great, but this show is worth a watch. I may even re-watch it in 5 years.
a.) Rhona Mitra.Nuff said!
b.) I remember planning to binge watch this when the show originally aired. Never got around to it. I just started watching this today.. in the middle of the COVID19 pandemic.
Loving the pilot episode, patriotic theme and the general vibe of this show.
So far I've watched nearly the first 4 seasons. I preferred the first season over the rest for the story, though season 3 was also pretty good. The 4th season's story wasn't really for me, however, some of the characters are enjoyable to follow.
I must say though, I've never seen a show with a commanding officer of a giant warship to go ashore and lead VBSS/Shore teams as much as Tom Chandler does... I know they are short on men, but come on...
All in all, I've enjoyed the show, but as some others have mentioned, it is very much a "Team USA" show...
Probably the absolute worst show I've ever watched, the only reason I kept going was because it's a summer show and options are always limited in the summer so I had no choice, I implore you all to save your brain cells by not watching this show, ever!
I would only recommend this show if you're a Michael Bay's fan, then you're gonna love this for sure.. Mericaxplosions everywhere, HOT DAMN, HELL YEAH!
Focused and entertaining. The show does not get bogged down with drama or superfluous characters. Instead, it is fast paced and packs a lot of action into each episode. Military aspect is very accurately portrayed which is a big plus. Plot quality decreases slightly for season 4 but is still worth watching. There is a strong patriotic undertone, which apparently turns some people off for some reason. In my opinion it adds to the emotional tension of the show.
As cliched and bad as this was, it was an interesting premise, they should have just ended it last season, the absurd season opener and the Central American war are just nonsense now
I like season 1-3. Season 4 sucked! I hope season 5 is better.
No need to tell the same things again but here we are !!!
Insult the Greek navy again ??? No love from us !!!
The plot is not good.
Nice very nice, new ways for you to insult Greeks and our navy !!! Until this ends you gonna take 1 star from me cause i can’t vote for zero !!!
not gonna lie, I'm only watching it because Dichen is in it. Powering through the first two seasons but it's so over the top patriotic i feel like my eyes will never recover from all the rolling
Where the fuck is season 4??? We've been waiting.
BRILLIANT SHOW!!!!!!! Teenagers, adults, grandparents MUST WATCH!!!
It's alright so far, nice effects and if you like military stuff, this is your show! But beware: this show is very American (not very surprising as Michael Bay is the Executive Producer) and stereotypical. Nevertheless, it somehow got me hooked and I'm eager to know what will happen next.
Worth a try.
I really enjoy this show. The first season is kind of like the movie Outbreak but has good drama throughout. I'm not that big into military movies or shows, but this one has excellent writing. The endings are cliff hangers that make you really excited for the next week. Some of the acting is subpar, but I enjoy the main roles.
I watched all them episodes n l like it . Can't wait the new one come out .
Amazing show!! One of my favourites
I personally love this show from Season 1 don't know what them other clowns talking about if it was not good would not be on season 3 you think. More action than the movies coming out. If you never watched start with Season 1 because it is a continuing story.
My favourite sub-genre of science fiction has to be the ones with military aspects. It is difficult to have those be focused on a whole-world scenario, as they are generally about military personnel from one country (in most cases, the USA). This plot is a whole combination of overused plots, in a very American setting. That said, it is pulled off quite well, and Eric Dane suits the character very well.
Most would wish that they just stopped with the patriotic bullshit, though... it is not all about you, America!
In my opinion, this show isn't all bad. It presents a strong story line even though some of the lines are too cheesy. If you like shows that give off an apocalypse vibe (Z nation, TWD, Survivors, Falling skies) then I would recommend this show.
I Love This Show!!!
It's the best, as soon as soon as the show starts your eyes don't move from the screen!!
This is like Jock Trek. It didn't have the best start, but if you can get through a few episodes, you'll find yourself wanting more.
Is this ship going down the plug hole ?
wasn't that bad at the end! great show!
Been watching it and it's a nice TV show to watch. Seems to get better with each episode
Oh say can you see, by the dawn's early light...
or
Rassiya svyashchennaya nasha dyerzhava...
That's what this show is all about.
An EX-ruski Vice Admiral — there are no countries in the world anymore— trying to steal da cure for da biiiiig virus, yup!
An american Captain and his crew... Herye, Herye, trying to save the world- again! So altruistic! Gush ...cries
The story revolves around an (Ex)U.S Navy Warship and Ex-Ruskis fighting over a cure to stop a virus that killed ca. 80% of the planet's population!
The difference?
1. The Ex-Ruski Vice Admiral wants to play God, be the only one with a cure, dominate the world and drink Vodka. Na zdrowye!
2. The Americans want to save the world, so our kids won't have to sing the aforcited Russian anthem! (Our U.S protagonists bitchslap Russia 24/7 and I start feeling bad for the Ex-Russians!)
3. The Ex-Russians are no patriots. They simply want power.
4. The Americans- well, there's no government anymore, but they are still american. Not 90% yankee, but 110%! Yea! Take that!
That's it... simple, stupid, action packed and 110% yankee! X)
But, but, but, don't get me wrong, the show is watchable! I do enjoy it!
PS: What the faq happened to China? Hello? O.o China, big & developing superpower... I think the producer is obsessed with Russia! Russia's a relict compared to the mighty Chinese Empire.
USA and its uncontrollable habit of turning russians into villains. Meh crap pilot. It Puts their ego before the facts.
Awesome Show! Will be keeping up with this one! To Good!
it's so michael bay-ish: we've explosions, army, heros*, one last hope, pathetic dialogues and so on... but it's great from what I can say after the first two episodes!
This is actually good, better than i had expected..
Lets hope TNT doesn't murder this like ABC murdered Last Resort :)
Time to play some Plague Inc. while watching this. ;)
I want to watch it! it looks really good :) and Eric Dane stars ((:
I'm strapping down for this looks awesome!
yep that trailer I saw looks nice. I'm in. 9 weeks to go.
I'm in too. At least i'll try the pilot.
Second chance at a Last Resort type show but without the trigger happy TV network this time, Michael Bay is a nice bonus too I suppose. Count me in, looking forward to the series premier.

I personally like the show so far. Kinda got me hooked
