I really had high hopes for this show. I love Steve Carrell and this had a good cast. It fell short with the story of his family I think. It was also odd that they didn’t show his family with the cops? Like his son put up signs like he was a missing dog but that was it. You don’t call the cops? Also with the mom. I mean come on. If I knew my son was a serial killer. I wouldn’t just scold him like a toddler. She just lived with him and knew he was doing all of this. I wasn’t really shocked by the ending. I really didn’t see it going any other way. Good cast and acting but the story fell flat for me. From the looks of the positive comments. I guess I’m in the minority.
My god that ending killed me absolutely killed me. Im in shock.

The most harshest ending i have ever seen. damn. that was totally unpredictable. yet it's beautiful.

What an emotional banger of a season finale!
The Patient packed a lot into its finale. Not entirely sure I liked it, but it rang true to the characters and the situation. It was the only logical ending I could think of that actually fit the story and themes. There was no way Alan was getting out alive.
But the pacing was awful. We literally go from Sam trying to kill his father to a scene of him talking to Alan. How did Sam's father react after almost getting killed? It was jarring and felt rushed. I also wish they had shown us more of Alan's family. I didn't get attached to any of the characters or their stories. So for me, the letter at the end was so cheesy and completely unconvincing.
My biggest problem with the show is that so many things were just red herrings, we never got follow up on on a lot of things. The writers got lazy by putting a lot of that stuff in (which turned out to be more interesting then Alan's inner dialogue) and then simply put them aside. It felt manipulative. My biggest gripe is that note Alan shoved in Elias' mouth never got discovered.
A lot of the complaints I'm seeing seem to boil down to people expecting the show to be something it wasn't. The Patient is not a detective show or a murder mystery, it was a character study. The point was to explore how good people should respond to evil. I think this is clearly Alan's story and not Sam's. Also, the main point of the show is about closure and the difficult path it takes to get there:
- one episode was entirely dedicated to Ezra's personal growth to finally accept his father;
- Alan received closure in the sense that he accepted he was part of the problem when it comes to Ezra;
- Sam's never killed someone he liked before. So killing Alan was like killing his father in a way. And by locking himself up, he's trying to physically become more like the father he wanted - Alan. It's very Freudian.
The Holocaust imagery was a little obvious and on the nose, but overall I thought it was a good story, a look into the darker side of humanity. There better not be a season two, some shows are only good for one season. This is 100% one of those shows.
A tough, real tough watch but a great watch.
A good finale. It has it's strong and weaker points, but it sticks the landing just fine. Through this season I was hoping that Alan would survive, but also that Sam would get better, turn himself in or at least let Alan go. From the moment he talked to this other therapist at the school I knew things wouldn't end well. The fact that the show turns Alan's death into something bitter sweet is really well done. The letter to his kids was beautiful and I think recognisable for a lot of fathers but also sons and daughters.

Stupid ass ending. Ugh what a waste of ten hours if my life.
Complete waste of time. Took me over 3 months to get thru it with each episode so slow paced. 3/10.
Show was better early on but by the end it was meh. Could’ve been better. I figured the end would be the only way it could end but maybe try to sneak something in the letter to get Sam locked up. Sams mother should’ve been locked up also because if I was her I wouldn’t sit and try to save him without being institutionalized.
Really enjoyed this,but didn't expect that ending.

I see a lot of positive reactions so I’m probably in the minority here but I don’t think the show earned this ending. I was definitely surprised and there was a level of emotion, but the ending mostly just made me mad. The conclusion felt rushed, and it just feels like Alan went through all this and put up with everything all for nothing. I understand that he went on his own internal and reflective journey with his relationship with his son and that was paid off at the end, so it technically wasn’t all for nothing, but I’m not a fan of how the end played out. The emotional weight with Alan’s kids should’ve hit so much harder than it did but they were barely even characters in the show so it falls short because I feel no real connection to them. So for me this finale was more annoying and frustrating than the captivating tragedy they were likely going for.
