[9.4/10] A perfect showbiz satire, one that both speaks to the unique issues facing The Simpsons as it was rounding out its eighth season, but also the challenges of all long-running television shows and the T.V. industry and culture around it in general. The episode is supremely quotable, with lines like “fired for that blunder,” “when are they going to get to the fireworks factory?” and, of course, “Worst. Episode. Ever.” that haven taken on a life of their own. It speaks to how applicable the show’s satire is to other areas.

On top of that, there’s a lot of fun and funny stuff. Poochie is a brilliant send up of corporate attempts at coolness. Homer’s attempts to defend the proactive little cartoon dog are unsuspectingly sweet. And there’s so many interesting little jabs and bits on fans wants and reactions to their favorite shows. I tend to uniformly enjoy when The Simpsons goes meta, and this may be its best full-length effort in that regard. Assuredly a classic.
