This one manages to set the table and be interesting and fun at the same time. Nice setup, good character introductions, plenty of familial dysfunction (but not too much) and a good hook at the end.
the diner fight scene is amazing. i never knew how badly i needed a 13 year old killing several armed men to 'istanbul' until now
also the phantom of the opera violin medley in the beginning? beautiful
Why do billionaires in tv land always want to adopt children or raise their children to become crime fighters? lol
Sometimes quirky and unique can be interesting. Other times it's just weird and annoying.
In the first three episodes too much emphasis on single characters, some freaks, some psycho, in some measure all are misfits. Meh. Let's see how the show will evolve. If it does.
The Umbrella Academy has a good first episode, but it is confusing in some parts and very slow. The characters look very interesting, especially number 5 and Vanya. Firstly about the script, I thought the episode is well written by Jeremy Slater. For a pilot episode is enough to arrest but could have been better. Apart from the characters already mentioned, none aroused my initial interest and I found the story somewhat confusing. Anyway it's only the first episode, so I'll give the benefit of the doubt. The direction is not that good. Directed by Peter Hoar, I found his direction very slow and with little character development. Of course, he first wanted to present the initial premise of the series, but I think he could have driven the story more effectively and made the characters more relatable. It was a reasonable direction. About photography and special effects, I liked it a lot. There are scenes that are very visually beautiful that do not owe to any blockbuster nowadays. The colors and lighting of the scenes were very well used, giving clarity and life to the scenes of the episode. Beautiful work of photography direction and special effects. And the soundtrack is very good, especially since number 5 kills everyone in the cafeteria. Very good and also very well used. The editing of the episode was kind of hampered by the slow steering, having a slightly too slow pace. It could have given more dynamism in the editing of the episode. The performances are average, except for Aidan Gallagher and Elle Page. Idan can convey a lot of truth to the character who has the body of a child but has an adult mentality. He managed to balance it very well. Elle can pass all the melancholy of the character for not being special with her foster brother. Vanya looks like a very promising character and actress got the message in this episode. I also enjoyed Emmy Raver-Lampman with Allison and she is very charismatic, but little was shown of her. The rest as the interpreters of Diego, Luther and Kluas were very average and I couldn't feel any empathy for their characters. Adam Godley did well in the Pogo voice acting. I would say overall, the acting of the cast was reasonable with some individual highlights. Finally I would like to talk about the Pogo CGI that I found wonderful. How the character was very lively, giving him a very realistic aura. It reminded me a lot of the new Monkey Planet trilogy and that's a good sign. So overall, this first episode was good and promising, but it could have been better if it hadn't been so dragged in and had more interesting characters. But for a start, I was curious. And the final scene was a great hook for the next episode. 7/10.
I struggled a bit with this. The basic concept is interesting enough (even if it feels a bit familar), but I don't think some of the actors are very good and I REALLY don't like the characters they're playing. The thought of spending a whole season with them isn't a pleasant one at this point. The constant squabbling feels unearned and overdone, and so much of the situation needs explaining better (Pogo, what the hell?). Five returns from the future but doesn't seem bothered about telling everyone the really important information he discovered there.
Everyone is angry, everyone is moody and everyone is quick to lash out. It makes them all seem a bit stupid. Obviously there are things to be revealed as the series continues, but this feels like it should be basic upfront information. The whole thing moves with very little purpose. There's enough intrigue here to make me want to see a bit more before deciding if it's worth bothering with the whole thing.
I also really hated the use of musical segments. Again, it reeked of trying too hard.
It was really hard for me to get through the first three episodes, but the fourth finally moves the plot in an interesting direction and I binged the rest after that.
Now that's the Robert Sheehan I found so annoying, but quickly grew to love, from, "Misfits," (along with that entire cast)!
Cool they have so many languages to choose from -- wonder how well they did on that front.
They've changed some basic stuff from the written version...dunno how well that'll work or detract from...yet.
What a fantastic season opener. Giving us enough information, but still leaving us hanging with multiple questions. This is gonna be a good show
I really liked the dance :)
The song moment was straight out of Sense8
Great cast but Aidan Gallagher of Nicky, Ricky, Dicky and Dawn owns the show as soon as he’s introduced.
Robert Sheehan tries too hard to steal the show though and can be annoying.
Nietzsche one said, “Man is as a rope stretched between the animal and the superhuman. A rope over an abyss. It is a dangerous crossing, a dangerous looking-back, a dangerous trembling and halting.” As much us you must strive for individual greatness, and strive you must, for it won’t come to you if it’s own accord... you must also remember that there is no individual stronger than the collective. The ties that bind you together make you stronger than you are alone. They will make you impervious to the pain and hardship the world will thrust upon you.

The pacing is definitely a little slow so far, but the plot has peeked my interest and the characters already have very intriguing and distinct personalities with complicated relationships to each other, so I’m certainly curious to see how it continues!
That's a way to start a season! Instantly hooked. 4 & 5 probably my favourites already!
I thought the violin intro was never gonna stop. God damn that went on.
Watching this on March 24, 2021 was very much a treat.
Stupid people talking about stupid things doing stupid things.
If you're through with all other content then it might be okay, I guess, but there is just too much unexplained which could be explained with ease rather than forced exposition.
This series had me when Pogo appeared.
Decided to rewatch this show in preparation for the 2nd season and oh boy, I missed these idiots
Probably one of the best first episodes ever and it only gets better.
Weird show, great music. It has potential and I'm sure it will be good.
How can i watch this show
Very impressive start and great promise.
this show got me so excited and interesed!! i love klaus lol
The They Might Be Giants scene sold it for me.
diego dancing in the living room to "i think we're alone now" sir bust my legs open
@ Anthoney65 - Tru Dat, and, this show, or at least this episode wasn't yelling at the top of it's lungs, "HEY! LOOK AT ME I'M QUIRKY!!! AIN'T I COOOOOOL? like a certain other show not to be mentioned here. It just let the story unfold, and, allowed the viewer to suss things out as they happened, rather than spell it out, then tell you how AWESOME what you just saw was. It made me want to see where things go, instead of grabbing some nacho's and a beer.
A very plodding pace is masked by great but not colourful visuals. It does this thing that I generally find more annoying than not of not tell you everything. Where they introduce some people but not others and you just have to infer a bunch of things. At least everyone is unique looking so you don't have to spend three episodes before you can tell them apart.
Overall this was a very very good pilot episode. After watching Titans and Doom Patrol it's nice to see something with a bit more polish.
The dance scene was great. The fight scene was great.
Not a bad premier but I had expected a lot more. I'm surprised that I enjoyed "Doom Patrol" more. It's just one episode though.
I'm a sucker for comic book adaptions. Especially not your mainstream Marvel/DC ones. This has peaked my interest.
Okay, so it was kinda slow, but visually this is already beautiful.
OK so far, but I'll guess 1h Episodes are again too long.

I liked how each hero personality and faults are emphasised. So much more than a heroes series!
The dance moment reflects that and sumarizes the 1st episode.
