The opening of this episode is challenging to sit through. Why did those behind this show consistently choose what's behind door number dumb? It's disheartening.

The remainder of the episode fares better, but the opening casts a long shadow. As with prior episodes, things are hinted at, but never clarified, leaving the viewer with yet more questions to add to the pile.

Spoiler: The questions aren't followed-up on or answered. It's all an unsatisfying tease.

The standalone episodes are better. The conspiracy storyline ("mythology" is... special - and used incorrectly) holds little weight after the show jumped the shark... multiple times (and early). The showrunners didn't have a plan and are clearly winging it. If not, they're not competent. It would've been wiser to have chosen a grounded route based on science and educated speculation. Play into conspiracy theories and urban legends and tap into human behavior. This is alluded to during the episode. It's not the direction the show goes in.

All this typed, is it entertaining? It is. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't. Still, this is working out to be a case of it being better not to revisit things you enjoyed in the past.

A mythology episode.

Scully investigates what the device in her neck is while Mulder gets trapped in the train car where the alien autopsy was performed. He is trapped with the would-be killer of the Japanese autopsy doctor. This is good but over the years I have really lost love for the mythology episodes.

Secondary Characters in this episode: X, The Elder, CSM
