I think there are a number of things to unpack here on what was good and what went wrong, so I'll try to keep it brief:
- the musical numbers were clever, albeit forced as hell, and they were all missing the core value of Zoey and the singing person(s) feeling/connection
- focusing on Zoey and Max was good, but it was weird to realize in the last 10 minutes that I was watching their first meeting for the last 30 minutes. Maybe that was just me, but it felt they've known each other for years now, there were no "Hi, I'm Zoey - Hi, I'm Max" kind of thing in the first 5 minutes that would have immensely helped to set where we are and when we are on their timeline. They got a nice twist at the end though
- Danny Michael Davis is still a good satire of Zuckerberg, but he's always so all over the place and wants to steal every scene he's in, that I felt the show hit that point again where I just don't want to see him, at least for a good amount of time, but also wouldn't hurt if he would be gone forever
- Mo's appearence was forced, so was Emily's, but the latter was worth because it gave full context to David
- If they wanted to force everyone to appear, where was Simon?
- "switching" the roles of Mitch and Maggie was nice
Long story short: it felt they had two great ideas (three if we count the therapy session frame), one on the Zoey-Max front, the other on Mitch and Maggie, but it took away from both that they either tried to shove in other things (like Danny Michael Davis and out of place singing), or it wasn't confirmed enough that what we see is the Capital Onset of everything wrong in Zoey's life (like the first meeting of Zoey and Max), but they literally wanted the entire episode to be about this.
So maybe a little less here and a little more there would have been better. But on the bright side, the next episode can finally put an end to the love polygon (we are way past a triangle, but I stopped counting)
