Jackie Brown

This was a great movie. Unlike his other movies where the action and violence is superfluous and a bit shocking, this movie really shows his skills as a director. The violence is turned down (comparatively) but it surprisingly add more suspense. The wordplay, interactions and tension between all the characters is where this movies shines. Everyone does a stellar job. No character is over played and all feel to fit their roles like gloves. They are real people with real problems and real consequences. And the soundtrack adds to the atmosphere, it makes you think you are watching a 90's blaxploitation flick.

What the Health

Funniest mockumentary watched this year. 1 egg = 5 cigarettes and cheese = heroin, hard hitting facts.

The Wheel of Time

Quite a disappointment. I've only read the first book a long time a ago so some story elements were there.

However the whole season was just abysmal. The pacing is just wrong and there is no driving plot.

Better fantasy shows out there, I'd give this one a miss.

Sicario

Sicario has beautiful cinematography, score and some truly terrifying moments dripping with suspense. However, the plot falls flat on its face due to the obscure and secretive nature. Like Kate, we are taken for a ride and have been left much in the dark. But during the reveal, 3/4 into the movie, everything feels underdeveloped and overly simple. The visceral images of the victims of the cartel portray them as a new kind of monster not seen before in the drug wars, but the conclusion of the movie, delves back into overly used stereotypical images. Blunt, del Toro, Brolin and Kaluuya hold up their ends very well but the mediocre script eventually lets the movie down.

Sleepers

One thing that stands out here is the acting, it is spectacular. You really feel for all the characters especially the boys and the suffering they endure. However, where everything breaks down is the finale. Watching this movie in the 2017 with the number of pedophilia cases and stories in the news and their outcomes makes the ending highly improbable and nearly fantastical. The shooting of Nokes is what real revenge usually is, messy and unplanned. However, the court confession of Ferguson is highly unbelievable. They set up a priest to lie in court but a pedophile is so morally strong that he cannot? The ending plays like a Disney story, where righteousness and justice wins not matter how seemingly impossible the set up.

Shadow of the Vampire

The movie was a bit of a disappointment. After a good start, with interesting characters and great atmosphere, the plot quickly descends into a series of set pieces with no cohesion. The movie has horror elements but it is neither scary or thrilling. Malkovich and Dafoe are the highlights with great acting and charisma on screen but in the end the movie feels hollow and underdeveloped.

Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan

This is a hard movie to rate. On one hand the cinematography, costumes, location and action are all shot majestically. It's a beautiful movie To watch but the story and script are not so enjoyable. There are numerous scene jumps sometimes over years and the dialogue sometimes seems a bit cryptic.

Terminator Genisys

This movie is an unfortunate mess.

There are way too many characters and story lines that added nothing to the Terminator lore. The movie still banks on the success of the first 2 movies, where it replays scenes and situations in their entirety but in the end feels very hollow. None of the actors carry their characters well, they are 1 dimensional and paper thin. When the plot is not driving the dialogue we are made to endure cringe worthy jokes and whinging nothings. Instead of killing SkyNet, this franchise should have been destroyed once James Cameroon left the helm.

Missing

Fun engagement through apps and the screens but the endgame plot is a disaster…..what was the motive behind it? With this far fetched story the villain explaining their plan would have certainly added more clarity…..

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

The series got off to a good start, introducing characters and NC....but then ended predictably. It was almost a joke....everything leads to Cyberpsychosis. After playing the same and watching this series, I realized that I don't really enjoy Cyberpunk...in world and character building it is wafer-thin. once you scratch the surface there is not much underneath....all themes and stories are rehashed......

The Matrix Resurrections

Massively disappointing. It seems the Neo and Trinity story was not the ending Lana wanted in Revolutions and this movie aims to "correct" that.....shame.

Spielberg

A bit disappointing. After watching De Palma where the director revealed much of his inspiration, meaning and difficulties behind his movies, this documentary didn't say much more than what was already said. The last quarter of the movie was more about Spielberg's reputation rather than his movies. Spielberg may not be as technical as De Palma but expanding more on his sentiments and reasons for directing the films he chose would have added much more.

For example, during the shooting of Omaha Beach in Saving Private Ryan, Hanks brings up the issue where the sun was in the wrong position but Spielberg was able to overcome it and film it differently. It would have been better if Spielberg spoke about this instead.

Raw

A dull foray into a girl's first year at Uni. It will probably resonate with those who had similar experiences of the strangeness, awkwardness and weirdness that is Uni life but it doesn't make a good movie. The "carnivorous" change is just sensationalism and shock value.

Hellraiser

The atmosphere was great but the plot and script was just crap. Seems like one of the recent slasher flicks where the Cenobites were the villains killing the hapless teenagers .....bah.

mother!

Amazing!

That's all I can say. Maybe i'll say a bit more ...

At face value the story is about a loving couple where the wife loves and supports the husband but the husband uses her strength to follow his own path.

However the allegory behind this movie is the Christian religion. There is God, Adam, Eve, Cain, Able, Jesus, the Bible, pagans and believers. But this story is from the point of view of an unknown character, the mother (God is usually the Father) and how his decisions broke her and her love. I believe the Mother represents the destroyer (in Christianity this character is often attributed to temptation, the devil, sin and evil) as a character, she brought the great flood (although only for a short time) and will bring the Apocalypse.

There is a lot more I can write about this movie, which I probably will after a second viewing.

De Palma

An excellent documentary that peels away the layers behind De Palma and his movies. A must see for any movie buff interested in the technicalities of movies and scene composition.

I have a new found respect for Snake Eyes after watching this.

Deep Web

A very well done documentary. It presents an alternative view of the story and of Ross to that portrayed in the media. As it is always easier to hear the words and ideas of government, documentaries like this give those oppressed voices an outlet. As anonymity is slowly eroded away, it is becoming more and more important that we fight for it. This is a must see, and will definitely leave you thinking about some of those big questions.

The Gift

The plot of the movie is surprising departure from the standard fair of thrillers. The movie has no action but the plot is delivered simply on the strength of the acting. The scenario is a bit far fetched and entirely unrealistic but it is surprisingly watchable. The movie is paced beautifully and you honestly feel swept along for the ride.

Lady Snowblood

I sought this movie out after learning it was the inspiration for Kill Bill. A very different movie, to Tarantino's classic but in many ways also similar. This is a "roaring rampage of revenge" done in the quieter Japanese style. The movie has a very solemn tone and takes its themes of vengeance and redemption seriously. Even though the movie was released in the 70's it is a highly watchable and entertaining. The acting, story and cinematography are all very well done keeping to the tone and late 1800s setting.
