Hogwarts. A boarding school where children...:
– Are placed in four different houses and pitted against each other.
– Learn how to fly in a broom, without any safety measures and supervised only by an incompetent professor.
– Are rewarded every time they break any rule.
– Are allowed to play a brutal sport in which serious injuries are quite frequent.
– Are punished by being sent to an "strictly off-limits" forest at midnight. (I wonder what would be the punishment for wandering in the Dark Forest without permission...).
– Are scored through all the year, earning or losing points for their houses... only to have the least scoring house win at the last minute, because of 4 people.
Seriously. What's with the House Cup? How many students are there in Hogwarts? 200, 400? The whole Gryffindor scored something like 360 points in the whole year. But since our trio decided to go on a (completely forbidden and extremely dangerous) adventure, they are rewarded with an extra 170 points and win. From 4th to 1st. If I were any of the other students, I'd feel betrayed, to say the least.
What's worse, there wasn't any need for the adventure. The stone was actually well protected, Quirrell couldn't get it from the mirror. So... well done, guys.
Having avoided it entirely for 20 years I am now reading the books and watching the movies and I gotta say, they're pretty great. No hot takes here. Of course the movie can't touch the book, but it is pretty good. The CGI however AWFULLLLL. Anytime someone is tossed or raised slightly on a broomstick they turn into gumby like CGI creatures with dead eyes. Put them up there with CGI Spidey bouncing around. Other than that, pretty good movie and I'm halfway through the second book now, the books are great!
Since I was comlpletely out of the loop regarding HP and had no nostalgic feelings it was a bit hard for me to relate to the characters. I somehow wish I could have watched the movies when I was Harry's age, like so many of my friends did. For me it's an okayish movie. I'm not exaclty in love with it but I'm looking forward to watching the other parts of the series.
Meeesta Pottuhhh..its meeee..Dobbieeeee...Kiiiillllll meeeeeeeee...k-k-k-killl m-m-meee
I've loved this movie lol
It’s astounding really that the Potter franchise managed to grow beyond this entry. Regardless of the dated effects work which stand out even more, it’s the terrible pacing and some rather clunky performances from the child actors that drag this film down. It doesn’t help that the script is really poor and treats its audience like idiots, feeling the need to spell out every single plot point. Looking back at the series as a whole, there is so much material here that could have been cut that would have helped the film immeasurably, not least by balancing the desire to develop the world with the narrative demands of the actual plot. Harry Potter at times feels like Oliver Twist in that the central hero of the film is the least interesting character and it doesn’t help that Radcliffe spends most of the film gawping and reacting to events. It isn’t a total loss - the casting is pretty much spot on with the more experienced adult actors helping to sell the script and carry the performances of the children around them. Emma Watson and Rupert Grint seem more comfortable in their roles than others and Radcliffe does have some moments that suggest he will grow into the role. It doesn’t hurt that the film also has John Williams on top form - his musical themes bringing a magical quality to the film even in moments where the rest of the elements fail to shine.
The beginning of arguably one of the best franchises ever. The characters, the fantasy the story everything checks out. I remember reading the books as a kid, I was in love with them, then I discovered the movies, from that point rest is history. I remember being obsessed with the movies and the books. Rewatching this brought back so many memories and washed me with pure nostalgia. These movies all used to be 10/10 for me as a kid but as I grow up you realize some flaws in it like the inconsistent CGI.
Hagrid: "You're a wizard, Harry!"
Harry: "I'm a what?"
I was 8 when this came out and it was everything to me. Pure magic! There's nostalgia involved of course but even looking at it now it's just as awesome. Getting to know this magical world through the eyes of Harry is one hell of an adventure. Best first day of school movie ever.
It's the perfect setup for the franchise to come. Filled with interesting and intriguing characters you can't get enough of. Those characters, the magical objects, spells and amazing set pieces are the best aspects of this movie. The score is equally magical, one of my favorites of all-time. The tone is just perfect, it's lighthearted and childish but also knows when to get serious and emotional. The comedy is well balanced also and it's pretty funny to me.
The child acting could always be better. Alan Rickman (Snape) and Maggie Smith (McGonagall) were the standouts in this one. A few CGI parts that don't look very good. The game of chess and the "Troll in the dungeon!" are my favorite moments.
Magical Creatures Ranked (by favorite):
I know that people often view the first couple of Harry Potter films as being more childish, and I can't say that the films don't shift in tone from Prisoner of Azkaban onwards, but this film is still rather dark and creepy at times - much more so than I had remembered.
It's a classic.
Fun to watch movie, yet kinda childish and corny, Emma Watson played a very well role of being very irritating and annoying, remembered that hateful smartass girl in the school. The traps, or challenges to get the philosopher's stone are pretty dumb, I'm pretty sure that Quirrel would die of cringe passing them through. By the way, the villain died for being allergic to Potter's skin, that's very convenient a lazy way to make the protagonist win in this movie, however I liked the treatment of the death in this movie being for children.
52 | Harry Potter franchise is the kind of film we want to watch as a child for the first time again. The world-building in this film was so magical and put us in good memory. The music score was amazing to listen to and added more wizarding nuance. Every kid who watches this would be wanted to go to Hogwarts. But, not for their parents. This opinion might ruin some of our childhood memories. Hogwarts is the most dangerous school which also has the worst system that every parent doesn't want their kids to go near it. First-year students learning to fly with a broom without safety? The teacher could do a spell for protection perhaps. The Quidditch made it worse, the teachers literally tried to kill their students in a barbaric way. It was weird if Hermione thinks the chess game was barbaric but not the Quidditch. It actually would be fine if this film introduced us to the different cultures between muggles and wizards, but it failed to do that. The third act was the worst part of the film. If three bunch of first-year students could easily pass the escape room, anyone could do it too and it would make the philosopher stone not that precious for Albus Dumbledore who tries to protect it from you know who.

Cute little story with 3 kids who uncover an evil plot in a university for wizardry. Harry Potter is invincible. The game of Quiddich is ridiculously stupid. I hope it doesn't resurface in the other movies.

Undoubtedly targeted at a young audience, there's a certain degree of magic dancing around this picture that makes it easily accessible to adults as well. Although my own childhood was long gone by the time this hit theaters, watching it today was like leaping back through time to an age filled with innocence and wonder. That effect does occasionally get lathered on a bit thick, but a speedy pace and densely populated realm are usually enough to compensate for such moments.
JK Rowling's rich, sprawling, imaginative world is downright hypnotizing on the screen, loaded with treats and treasures, and it's tough to look away for even an instant. Although the CGI work is distractingly bad in a few instances (it very nearly ruins the Quidditch match), the child actors are average at best and there isn't much adversity to our heroes' hunt for the MacGuffin Stone, it's still a cheery, entertaining introduction to a universe that's positively buzzing with potential.
I do have bias towards these films these days I suppose as they are a massive source of nostalgia fir. me. Although I do admit that there is some terrible CGI and some of the people weren't very good at acting in this particular installment I still rather enjoy the movie.
The movie pays great homage to the books but also helped itself to stand out on its own.
Lots of acting errors and some mishaps but honestly it really makes the movie better. I like the Harry Potter films, especially the older ones since they seem to have a tad bit more interest to me. Not one of my favorites, this one that is, but overall something that I think the entire family can enjoy!
A good start to the franchise. A little too kid friendly but I was 10 when this came out and I loved it. The score is great. Some of the effects don't look good and I never noticed that before. Still it's a lot of fun and brings back a lot of nostalgia for me.
Not too bad, Extended Edition is better.
The movie of my childhood, I've rewatched this so many times, I've started to know it off by heart. Absolutely amazing.
I think this movie is amazing. All the magic was transported and everything is wonderful. Of course it's for children and the atmosphere is adequate but without this spectacular film none of the sequels could have been done. I just simply love it!
The first of the Harry Potter franchise is still as magical ever to watch. I was hooked from this film and couldn't wait for the others to come out. The characters are relatable and likeable and you just really want the main characters to succeed in their endeavours. I have always been drawn into movies that feature magic and this one is no exception. A must see for all!
Kinda seems like a scooby doo episode. The kids figured out the entire plot of all of the franchise in their first few weeks of school. Why don’t the grown ups care more that 2 side characters and the their wizard messiah is talking about Voldermort. Snake doesn’t even care that the messiah saw his cut on the leg proving he got it from the dogs
The best movie and book saga of all time.
Isn't this movie called Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone??
It's alright I guess. Five
My favourite movie of the franchise.
They are so damn young, it's crazy to see them now on GQ and Maxim and ish like that, then seeing them back when they were my age reading the books lol. Unlike others, I felt that this one was better than the second.
Thats some really bad acting... To bad it only got marginally better as the sequels released.
Harry Potter might not be a great film, but it's a great story... if you're like 12.
This movie was just as I expected it to be except for two things Harrys eyes where blue and in the book his green eyes are part of the mystery that surrounds Harry, Second they skipped the part with the the potions on the table in the last part wich showed the cleverness of Hermoine and the importance of paying attention in class, much more so then the Devils Snare scene. Other then that its what I expected bt there where a few more flaws they didn't make you feel sorry for Harry while he was with the Dursleys it just made them look strange instead of mean and to normal and they didn't introduce you to the magic of Harry Potter they just threw you in but it was a good movie and its not Chris Columbus's fault (except the eyes) you just can't take a book that great and make it into a movie thats also that great. So instead of the movie becoming a classic and everyone forgetting about the book like THE WIZARDOF OZ peopole should simply think of the movie as a Harry Potter tie-in instead of the other way around
Saw this in theaters (note for me).
A story to go to sleep in
While this film is much different than the later Harry Potter films (and the spin-offs), the charm here is hard to match. Chris Columbus has a way with his movies that just oozes out charm in every facet it can. The nostalgia and world building that happens in this film is remarkable. The plot is lesser than future entries, but this stands out as one of my fondest memories of the series.
Rating: 4/5 - 85% - Would Recommend
5 minuten harry podcast way way way better. quite funny how bad the CGI is and how badly it's played at times. of course it won't be as detailed as the book. even though i didn't like the first book tbh. entertaining nonetheless 6.5/10.
ps: hagrid ain't as annoying as in the book but way more stupid lol
I think this is a perfect first movie to enter in a fantastical saga like Harry Potter.
We need to keep in mind that the book is too short (about 250 pages) and we have here a 2h 30min movie.
Great characters, good start and solid base for next movies. Also the world seems too magic and Hogwarts it’s awesome.
Pd: I would like to be in Ravenclaw! :bird:⬛
me: i think im over my harry potter obsession
me after hearing 5 seconds of hedwig's theme, holding back tears: i guess the fuck not
compared to the original novel by j. k. rowling, this film adaptation feels a bit loose to me, and missing quite a few charming scenes too, for example the one where hagrid come to harry's bed at the end confessing "it's - all - my - ruddy - fault!" , that would've been an emotional, heart-touching scene, or that harry's father once saved severus snape's life so that's why snape was murmuring a counter-curse against quirrell
Theme- 9.5/10
Rewatchibility- 8.5/10
Acting- 7.5/10
Kinematography- 9/10
Time- 8/10
Total - 42.5/5 = 8.5
It was always going to be impossible for the movie to live up to one of the greatest fantasy novels/series of of all time, but this film does a respectable job overall. The sense of magic and wonder present in the book definitely present here in the film as well, and the world of Diagon Alley, Hogwarts, and Quiddich is portrayed with obvious care and attention to detail. The casting is great, soundtrack unmatched, and pacing well done. The CGI, however, is significantly dated, and the movie does suffer at times from trying to cram so much content into a reasonable runtime. I'd say it's a must-watch for those who have read the book, and an enjoyable enough abridged first experience of the Wizarding World for those who haven't.
a classic :woman_shrugging_tone1: not incredible in terms of the rest of the films but an :sparkles:experience:sparkles:
I love the movie. it is well throughout and excellent made from the product time.
"It does not do to dwell on dreams, Harry, and forget to live."
Playing Hogwarts Legacy made me want to visit some of the Harry Potter movies and what better way then start with the first one. I haven't seen the Philosopher's stone in quite some time and I must say it holds up pretty well. I love the look of the castle, the way Chris Columbus sticks to the books, the way the world is introduced, John Cleese, Alan Rickman, the awesome score, Gryffindor stealing the House Cup wasn't that good though.
Anyway the first movie kicked the Harry Potter train full steam ahead and it still hasn't looked back. With the Hogwarts Legacy game being really good and introducing more people to the wonderful world of Wizards and Hogwarts, I wonder if we will ever get a tv show set in this world.
Happy this one still holds up!
First time watching and i can see what the hype is about now
Bought on Vudu as part of the HP 11-movie collection.
The world building and the casting are so well done, then the movie is kind of dragged down by the main story/mystery but still a great franchise starter
Such a nice and pretty timeless movie! <3
It's simply magical :)
The soundtrack is awesome, it has nice sounds, and a solid cinematography and VFX/CGI for that age.
I'm in my mid 20s now and this still brings up so many feelings and memories :)
I feel like it starts getting a bit more ridiculous (it obviously doesn't make much sense) but that doesn't really matter as one should never expect it to be realistic in the first place.
The Dursleys really are the worst... :o
"There's no such thing as magic."
But all of that makes it so awesome when 11 years old Harry Potter discovers the world of magic together with us (meeting Hagrid, Diagon Alley in London, platform 9 3/4, Hogwarts, flying a broomstick (and becoming a seeker!), etc.).
And somehow I find it very fitting to watch the Harry Potter movies on christmas (probably because it's so magical and because there are a few snow scenes).
PS: Ron to Neville: "It's for your own good, you know." (after Hermine and Harry saying "sorry" xD)
Harry's brother is so fucking annoying, I don't believe in violence but that kid is so annoying and rude and spoiled.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is a delightful children’s film from director Chris Columbus. Based on the popular book, a young orphan named Harry Potter discovers that he is a wizard, and is whisked away to Hogwarts academy to study magic. For a group of child actors, the cast is pretty good; particularly Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson. However, the story is fairly thin and the mythos is rather vague. Also, the special effects are remarkably poor and underwhelming. But the action scenes are fun and exciting, and John Williams provides a sweeping and magical score that has a whimsical energy that enhances the fantastical feel. While it has its weaknesses, overall Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is an entertaining family film that’s full of adventure.
Not very enjoyable fantasy.
It is a well-made film among those adapted from novels into live-action, but it is decidedly inferior to, say, "The Lord of the Rings."
I myself grew up watching mostly Ghibli, but for some reason I just can't get used to "Harry Potter".
That was an awesome movie collection
I really love the franchise and I remember being introduced to the harry potter world by my dad. definitely a movie that has a special feeling to me.
My 6 year old cousin thinks it’s reeaaallly scary, he watches the mandelorian without a wink
The title of this movie isn't correct, it's "Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone", unless the original title was renamed.
I must have been such an annoying kid to snob the whole series just because I had already read the book. I am now way too old (but equally annoying) to fully enjoy this, but I found it alright nevertheless. Sure it’s a little naive; everything is either black or white, the faculty’s blatant favoritism makes you side with the bad guys, but that’s understandable if we consider its target audience. At least it manages to set the right tone and introduce all little details of the Wizarding World (worst franchise name ever) without getting too long-winded.
The editing full of funny closeups didn’t age too well, but after all, we are talking about a Columbus film, it could have been worse. The only thing that felt stupid beyond reason is that in the end, there was no need for Harry to do anything at all. Q wouldn’t have been able to get his hands on the stone anyway.
Two decades later and I feel like I still know several of the lines by heart. There are small details I notice more now, but somehow it's still as magical as the first time around, even though the CGI and effects are noticeably from the early 2000s, this was pure magic back then.
I remember my first rewatch of this as a kid, the first book in my hand because I realized it was a very close adaptation, and I would look for the page in the book where the current scene would be and I was be so happy to hear the lines on the page being spoken onscreen. (I've stopped expecting book adaptations to be accurate since then, of course, but it was a nice memory, a reminder of simpler times.)
It really just follows the book from what I can remember. Seems like a test of what's to come.
it's really a great movie
Cute little story with 3 kids who uncover an evil plot in a university for wizardry. Harry Potter is invincible. The game of Quiddich is ridiculously stupid. I hope it doesn't resurface in the other movies.
Books are amazing examples of superb literary skills. The movies are trash!
How can you not like Harry Potter all your childhood fantasies rolled into one
This movie is really excellent !!!!
A beautiful movie that made me discover a magical universe where anything is possible. We are just as amazed as Harry as we follow his first year as a wizard. The children are lovable, the adults are really good, the music is beautiful and the plot allows a strong first installment to this story.
Since the day I watched this movie for the first time I have always wanted to study in Hogwarts. And I am still waiting for my letter !
Not everything can be as good as the original:

Childhood classic... magical... from the start to the ending... perfect casting, all around great picture, and effects... I prefer the first two films from the franchises over the rest, one Chamber Of secrets being my favorite, and my other reason being because the first two were directed by Chris Columbus, brought us some good films, written, and directed... much better than David Yates.. the other films just didn't have the same feel.. don't get me wrong he did a great job on Fantastic Beasts.... i do love the HP Universe XD
It's a well made film, now I still haven't read the books, so I can't base this film on a comparison. Even if I did, this is the movie and the movie itself is a magical and enchanting experience.
The first part of the famous Harry Potter story, not as terrific as the books but still very good!
As every Christmas for some years I see Harry Potter movies. Start with 1 "You're a Wizard," "I can not be'm just Harry." The boy who survived begins at Hogwarts. I like very much, the magic, the place, English actors
rewatch | When watching Potter cease to please me, it will mean that I have the beginnings of depression. Or something like that. #loveforever
My favorite part is once they've passed fluffy and have to catch the flying keys and play wizard chess, although it's much better and more detailed in the book.
They were so young!
Love it!! Awesome :wooting:
So young!
The first Harry Potter; good, but could been better. I'm not a big harry potter fan, but the movie was great!
I love this movie! Used to have the VHS... Unfortunately I used to live in Earth's gates of hell and the heat melted the tape. Can you believe that?
Suprisingly enjoyable.

Didn't really think about it until this re-watch... Dumbledore pretty much set Malfoy up to be Potter's enemy at the end by yanking the house cup away from Slytherin, no?
"Slytherin is in first place by a whole bunch, but here, let me give Gryffindor exactly enough points to bring them from last to first."
Bit of a dick move.
