I had a lot of fun watching this!
Guy Ritchie did a great job directing. I was amazed by the way it looks visually, it's beautiful. The CGI looked so real it was excellently done (four years passed since this film was made and there are few recent films that I've seen where the CGI is terrible, they should improve not recede. That bothers me a little) sorry for the outflow The plot is believable and Victorian London never looked so modern and fresh. The costume design and the set design were great. The music score were perfect very well suited in each scene.
Great acting by the two leading roles with special attention once again to the amazing Robert Downey Jr. his british accent was very good! The chemistry between him and Jude Law was great. Mark Strong did a great job also as the villian Lord Blackwood.
Overall this film is the perfect combination of humour, suspense and action.
I was for watching this for a while and I'm in a Robert Downey Jr. wave! Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows will be the next.
okay... so basically I like Sherlock Holmes, but this movie was completely different. Was much more like a regular action film which has nothing to do with Sherlock Holmes. I recommend the tv series 'Sherlock' if you want true Holmes & Watson experience ;)
being entertained simultaneously knowing it will never entertain you again
Really interesting story, good performances, enjoyable movie.
Robert Downey, this actor are really awesome he mixes seriousness and humor perfectly.
Guy Ritchie presents a new and exciting vision of Sherlock Holmes, the world’s greatest detective. When an occultist named Lord Blackwood resurrects himself and carries out a series of murders, a secret society seeks out famed detective Sherlock Holmes to uncover the mystery and stop him. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong, and Kelly Reilly, the film has an impressive cast that delivers strong performances. However, the plot is overly complicated and it’s hard to follow the mystery at times. And Ritchie’s directing style, with slow-motion and flashforwards to show Holmes’ thought process, can be a little jarring. Still, the chases and fight scenes are intense and exciting, and the costumes and sets are especially well-done. A fresh and daring take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s work, Sherlock Holmes is an entertaining thriller.
tried to watch cus i like robert downey jr but turned it off halfway through like 5 months ago and i havent turned it back on
It's tough not to call foul on how far this strays from the real Sherlock Holmes but Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are such a charismatic pairing that it's actually easy to forgive and forget. The crime solving deductions of Holmes are played up nicely here and turn a very dark story into a fun two hour whodunit.
Couldn't stay awake. Tiresomely frenetic and altogether far too smug.
The best Sherlock movie ever!
All perfect, same for Downey... A MUST WATCH!
Not my cup of tea. I couldn't even finish it
Just an action flick using Sherlock Holmes as a selling point whilst being as far away as possible from the actual characters.
This is a BIG movie! It is made to be a rollicking good time with tons of popcorn munched. Smaller kids will not be able to follow the story, but anyone who has read a Holmes story (and isn't against a little artistic license) should see the film. It is extremely entertaining and fun to watch.
Even tough Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would have turned in his grave had he seen this, I found Sherlock Holmes to be a very entertaining two hours.
The style of the movie is unique and perfectly in sync with an incredible score by Hans Zimmer. Couple that with very good actor performances and you get a distinctly unique adventure worthy of the Great Detective.
This was the first time I rewatched this since I saw it on the big screen when it was released, and I'm glad to say it was just as entertaining now as it was then.
Sherlock Holmes turned out to be better than I expected. I must admit, it wasn't a role I initially envisioned Robert Downey Jr. playing, but he absolutely nailed it. He brought a fresh and dynamic energy to the character, redefining our perception of Holmes. Downey Jr.'s performance showcased his versatility as an actor, proving that he could excel in roles beyond what we're accustomed to seeing him in. The film as a whole was a thrilling and visually stunning ride. The mix of Victorian-era London's atmosphere with the fast-paced action sequences created a unique and immersive experience. The chemistry between Downey Jr. and Jude Law added depth to the characters' friendship and partnership. It's a good watch for anyone looking for a different, more action-packed spin on the classic tales of Sherlock Holmes.
If you’re a Sherlock Holmes purist this movie is probably not meant for you. Though it is surprising how accurate to the books it occasionally gets being one of the few adaptations to dive into Holmes being into boxing and Watson‘s gambling addiction. But overall, it’s more a loose adaptation.
But a fun one, I might add.
Guy Ritchie does what Guy Ritchie does and gives Holmes an overly stylized action hero make over with elements of steampunk, throws in some ancient cult and clearly focuses more on the buddy comedy element than the mystery or sleuthing.
And somehow it kinda works. That is if you can turn off your brain for two hours and completely banish likes of Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett out of your mind.
Before we get further into this, yes I have read all of Doyle‘s Holmes novels as well as all of his short stories, so you can say I‘m somewhat of a fan. I‘m surprised by myself for liking this film as much as I do, because derives so much from the tone of the stories I enjoy so much. But sometimes an adaptation can surprise you.
Robert Downey Jr. makes for an eccentric and almost manic Holmes. He is weird, tactless, rude, but still a mad genius. He is not exactly the gentleman detective most people picture when thinking of the character (to be fair, neither is the Holmes from the books in most occasions) but he is entertaining and likeable and just oozes charisma.
Jude Law is actually one of my favorite portrayals of Watson, believe it or not (bested by Martin Freeman only) and that’s mostly for him being treated more as an equal to Holmes than the bumbling fool most adaptations make him out to be. Yes, Watson‘s purpose is mostly to be the reader’s (or audience‘s) surrogate and to be in awe by Holmes‘s deductions, but he is also his friend and the one person to keep him grounded. Let alone an experienced military man, which most adaptations seem to forget and instead give us and older Gramps Watson who is mostly clueless to the world around him.
The chemistry between Downey Jr. and Law is brilliant to say the least and they completely sell the reluctant best friends and partners in crime aspect, which is probably the best aspect of the movie. They bicker their way through the story like an old married couple and are a joy to watch.
Rachel McAdams joins the duo as Irene Adler, in this case Holmes‘s on again/off again love interest and she is fun and feisty and also has great chemistry with Downed Jr. Though, I‘m not entirely sure if this movie is now to blame for the mainstream opinion that Adler was the big love of Holmes‘s life when books only ever hinted at some sort of attraction, but whatever.
The villain is played by Mark Strong, who at this point is probably the go-to guy for creepy villains for every movie (still love him most as Septimus in Stardust). He does a fine, if campy job as hilariously on point named Lord Blackwood, a cultist with a "sinister" plan and is partially so over the top that he barely works as a believable threat. But for the movie‘s context it’s fine.
Kelly Reilly and Eddie Marsan round the cast up as Mary Morstan and Inspector Lestrade respectively and really get the most unfortunate parts to play. Mary sadly ends up in the role of (even if sometimes justified) nagging girlfriend to Law‘s Watson, who doesn’t want him to run off having adventures with Holmes and Lestrade is portrayed as an incompetent fool, which couldn’t be further away from his book counterpart.
The story is as ridiculous as they come and has nothing to do with actual Holmes lore, apart from some teases of Professor Moriarty, who will play a much bigger part in the sequel.
While not the strongest plot, the mystery is not the focus of the film and instead Ritchie commits more to an excessive Victorian buddy comedy of sorts and it’s a mindless fun to watch from start to finish. Also, let’s be real, sometimes that is more than enough.
Superb acting from the entire cast but what stands out most to me is the sets. They look amazing and really feel like they're time appropriate. One of my favourite RDJ films.
Great reimagine of Sherlock Holmes and Watson. Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law are great. Cinematography is awesome. Great story, great watch.
On the plus side detective deduction of a pair of main characters, on the minus fights as if Sherlock forgot that it is not Iron Man or something. ;)
Excellent adventure. Downey and Law are well suited for the their roles.
Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are a golden combination in Sherlock Holmes. Add Mark Strong, who is always dependable as a baddie and throw Rachel McAdams in the mix too and you have one fun Guy Ritchie directed Sherlock Holmes movie!
Sherlock Holmes looks good, Robert Downey Jr. steals the show, the action looks good, nice use of slow motion and an awesome Zimmer Score.
I'm happy I've finally rewatched this one. Really, really enjoyed it.
Funny and fast pacing action flick with a perfect cast of Robert Downey Jr. (who I normally do not like) as Sherlock: while the inclusion of the freemansons and the occult seem a little silly during the middle part of the movie, the plot twist at the end, revealing that their is no occult and black magic and everything was a setup by Lord Blackwood to intimidate his fellow freemansons, is a perfect closure for the flick. The fast-forward scenes, where Sherlock predicts what he is doing next or how he came to his conclusions are very refreshing and entertaining, while giving the whole detective / action movie theme something to stand out of the mass of similar flicks.
Guy Ritchie´s comeback into awesome directing!!!
One of the most offensive pieces I have ever seen in my life. It isn't an even adaptation, it's an entire new set of characters who happen to be named after the original ones by Conan Doyle. Downey Jr. just seems to play the same character again and again, and that character isn't Holmes.
Great movie, real sherlock :D
What can i say.... I like Downey jr. And Sherlock...
well done, but I prefer the TV series
RDJ is on fire these days with his portrayal of bad-boy fringe anti-heroes, and Sherlock Holes is no exception. Fantastic story, and Fantastic movie overall, great job Ritchie
Fine bit of entertainment. Not fabulous, but not awful. Oddly reminiscent of Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow
Wow this came out of no where!
I also love sherlock holmes films & shows but this wasn't as good as i expected. The first half let it down but it picked up from there so the last half was much better it's a shame they couldn't have started from there it would've been much better i hope the sequel picks up from there & keeps going.
This was total crap, watch 'Sherlock' instead (the UK show)
Love Sherlock holmes, so every movie of his is a good one! And this one is no less better!

A very good reimagination of Sherlock Holmes. A movie I love to watch again and again.
(I wonder if they could pull off "Hound of the Baskervilles" in that style. I'd watch that!)
