Veep: Season 6

6x01 Omaha

[8.7/10] A great way to kick off the season. Let’s start with Selina. I love that his episode is centered on her sinking into civilian life, finding it dismal, and being disabused on the notion that she has another political run in her. The way that she is just as, if not more awful as a private citizen than she is as a politician is an interesting direction to take her. Reuniting her with Andrew (who is as opportunistic as always) and having her living off of her daughter is a neat place to go with her. (Everyone’s reactions to her plans to run for president again are great, especially Gary who’s outwardly supportive but clearly inwardly thinking it’s a terrible idea.) And Gary and Richard as her erstwhile companions and rivals while they play backgammon and try to get her to write a book is a great move too.

Everyone else has interesting stuff too. I really enjoy Dan as a news anchor who pulls a The Producer by trying to use Jonah to get himself kicked off the air only to do even better ratings with the network in the process. Amy getting engaged to that proper tumbleweed from Nevada and clearly being out of place in his inner circle has potential too. And Ben not fitting in at startup like Uber with old boys club pottymouth is great. Mike as the poverty-stricken dad of three is a typically sad sack direction for him. And damnit if Jonah doesn’t make for a surprisingly good Lex Luthor lookalike!

Overall, a nice entrée into the next step a year later for all of the show’s main characters.
