[7.7/10] A fine conclusion to the two-parter. Mac & Charlie weren’t as funny when they were sneaking around rather than getting into hijinks and trying to fake their own deaths, but Dee seing them struggling on the street and yelling that they’re bitches, or Dennis saying of course he knew they were alive since they were making tons of noise and speaking at full volume was amusing.
Frankly, this episode was more a series of sketches than a coherent story. Dee’s misadventure on the bus was a fun little standalone bit with some nice opportunities for Kaitlin Olson to show her physical comedy chops. Frank being so despondent that he makes a Charlie mannequin and has a weird relationship with it was the bizarre vein of comedy I like from this show. And I like the swerve that despite all the intimidating imagery, Mac’s dad just wants to be left alone.
But the peak of the episode is Dennis’s interactions with his new German roommate. Something about Jan’s comic energy really worked well for the show, and Dennis wanting the anonymous sexual experience and being sent to a glory hole with Frank is a nice twist. There’s some stereotyping going on (and weak excuses to have scantily clad woman hanging around) but the refuge in ridiculousness and Jan’s performance manages to save it.
