What special effects, in the context of being filmed in 1951(!), were so laughable? It was made 65 years ago, what standard are you holding it against? In a time when the majority of films relied on rear screen projection in studio back lots, director John Huston shot nearly every practically on location in Africa, much to the ire of Bogart who hated every minute of it.
