The "jokes" didn't repelled me so much as aparently did you.. maybe I'm the only person that laugh watching the old ones.. eh. But I concur with you on the part that the story was weak or that was lacking something. Gave me a strange feeling, like I was watching some direct to TV movie.. :S

Direction, effects, music, photography, acting, etc. was really amazing as always. Didn't like the story too much – was expecting something more like episodes VII or Rogue One, but was disappointed. Basically everything was predictable and there was a little too many joke moments (just like Marvel or Disney is used to in their other movies).
Maybe a rewatch of all of them can change my mind, but so far this is nearer to episode I than any other movie…
