Possibly because the tents and their personal belongings weren't generated by the holodeck, they were real tangible objects...? Good point indeed.
But they brought the tents & other stuff with them?
You can't been holograms, but you can beam objects.

I thought it's impossible to beam stuff out of the holodeck.. Weird that it worked with the tents. ;)
