I wasn't familiarized with this part of the history of Italy, I had never heard about Giulio Andreotti and his position as politician in the Christian Democracy Party in Italy that posteriorly lead him to important positions in Italy's political life for example being the Prime-Minister seven times between 1972 to 1992. Andreotti was accused by having connections with the mafia, among other things but nothing was ever proved. He was above everything and anyone.
Even without knowing or maybe if you do not even care about Italian political history, Paolo Sorrentino makes you wanna know about them and you do wanna know more about who was Giulio Andreotti and more about what he did. Never being to obvious, a lot of events are shown to us in a way that we never really know who did what, but we are obligated to read between the lines, putting the pieces of the puzzle together by ourselves.
After watching this, I searched for various Andreotti's videos by curiosity to see how he really looked like in real life. Toni Servillo once again proves that he is a magnificent actor! This role is supposed to be a caricature but he really looks like Andreotti. He almost looks like a puppet, the way he walks and talks, but the power he transmits in that mysterious, subtle and awkward way is immense. Magnificent performance!
It's very stylish like any other Sorrentino film, but what I most love about his films is that there's not just style, there's always an immense substance beneath the gorgeous camera work and light. The sarcastic tone is present throughout the film. This is my third Sorrentino film I'm starting to notice that he always likes to turn things less heavy by giving it this little touch of irony. Specially about in the most careful and meticulous themes to talk about.
Il Divo is another great achievement from a director that really knows what he is doing.
