Ocean's Eleven 2001

The Good:

  • This truly is a modern heist movie classic that still has style and elegance today; you could even go as far to say it is the godfather of modern heist movies.
  • Focus on the characters and dramatic finesse, leaving the actions and suspense to the big boys.
  • All character introductions are distinct and memorable.
  • The actors who stand out are George Clooney, who carries most of the weight of the movie on his shoulders (and does it well) and Brad Pitt, whose badassery gives the cast a well-needed edginess.
  • Nice to see a heist movie with great stakes but mostly personal motives.
  • All scenes with Clooney and Julia Roberts are surprisingly beautiful and romantic - which only goes to show the dramatic strength of this film.
  • The bunch of misfits that make up the bulk of the cast only rarely see eye to eye, which creates some tension even in the more straightforward moment.
  • The heist part is well crafted with its twists and turns.
  • Andy Garcia portrays a very charming and likable, yet ruthless, villain.

The Bad:

  • The story mostly focuses on Danny Ocean, leaving the rest of the team in the shadows without being explored properly.
  • The first half before the heist can get a bit dragged out at times.
  • David Holmes' score is annoying.

Verdict:
A timeless heist movie supported by a splendid cast and superb dramatic moments, its clever writing will keep you watching to the very end.
