I Am Legend 2007

The Good:

  • They made the dystopian, future NYC look realistically overgrown and deserted. It makes me think of The Last of Us.
  • Will Smith actually does a good job carrying the movie on his shoulders alone for most of the film. He does it so well partly because he can interact and bounce off from his co-star, Sam the Dog.
  • The beginning of the film is very promising, but the promise is never acted upon and the potential fades away very quickly.

The Bad:

  • Relies too much on cheap jump scares and forgets to utilize its main asset and threat in a satisfying manner (I mean, the zombie things are barley in the movie).
  • The CGI monsters (why could they not be made with prosthetics and make-up?) look very cheap and unrealistic and aren't all that scary.
  • The present is combined with flashback scenes telling us how the movie got to the present point in time. These flashbacks are so rare and so removed from the rest of the narrative that they really don't add anything to the story.
  • Apart from predictable turns of events there really isn't much content in the story or anything for Smith to act on.
  • After the very predictable twist towards the end of the movie the entire film collapses on itself, turns very watery and just isn't all that interesting anymore.
  • This could have been so much more, but what we got is a bland movie with little to no persona.

Verdict:

A dull, bland and pointless zombie horror that brings nothing new to the genre and never get going properly.
